from a businessman.

A 28-year-old electronics and communication engineer with the Tata Consultancy
Services has been arrested by the Crime Branch for allegedly extorting Rs 7 lakh
from a businessman.
Police said that a cellphone Bikramjit Singh used to make extortion calls
belonged to a woman he had killed. He hoped to raise money to fund the murder of
his lover’s fiance.

A resident of Paschim Vihar,West Delhi,Singh completed B Tech in
Electronics and Communication Engineering from the IP University. He had been
working with TCS in Gurgaon since January 2006,police said.
According to police,Singh was in love with a colleague who got engaged to
another man eight months ago. Singh,who earned Rs 7 lakh per annum,believed that
she left him for a man who earned more than him.
This made Singh plot the murder of his lover’s fiance,Chand said. Since he did
not have the money to hire a killer,Singh decided on extortion and targeted his
neighbour.
According to Chand,Singh did not want to use his own cellphone to make the
extortion calls since he realised they could be traced to him. He thought of
using Internet calls,but realised that too was not without risk.
“He decided to kill a mother of two school-going children he had befriended two
years ago,only to use her mobile phone to make the calls,” Chand said.
On
July 7,Singh called the woman from a PCO booth in Madhuban Chowk and fixed a
meeting. He travelled in a DTC bus and reached Burari,where she lived. “He
stabbed her in the neck,took her mobile phone and left,” Chand said. After making
the calls,he threw the phone into a drain in Paschim Vihar.
