Crime Patrol: Three arrested for youth's murder in Delhi (Episode 662 on 27th May, 2016)

Durangaa:

Murder of 18 year old boy Furqaan

The Inside Story
The police on Tuesday arrested three men, including two hired killers, in connection with the murder of an 18-year-old youth whose body was found here on Monday.

Mohammad Anas Qureshi was found dead at Kamla Nehru Ridge in the northern part of the city with multiple stab injuries and strangulation marks, Deputy Commissioner of Police Madhur Verma said.

He said technical surveillance helped the police to nab Anas's uncle Mohammad Shahnawaz and his two associates Shahbaz and Sonu -- both of whom had been offered money for committing the murder.

"The three accused were arrested from different locations in Delhi on Tuesday. They killed Anas on Sunday night after administering him sleeping pills in coffee," Verma said.

The police were now looking for Anas's stepmother Rubina who was believed to have planned the murder with Shahnawaz.

Ownership of property was believed to be the motive behind the killing, the police officer said.

Woman gets stepson murdered

Not willing to be questioned about her movements and friendships by her 18-year-old stepson, a woman sought her brother-in-law’s help to murder him in North Delhi.

Another motive behind the murder was that Rubina was eyeing the property of her husband who died eight months ago, the police said.

The victim has been identified as Nawabganj-resident Anas Qureshi who had a wholesale business at the Azadpur fruit market. His body was found near the Hindu Rao Hospital in Civil Lines on Monday.

Police were initially clueless about the identity of the killers. “Our suspicion was drawn towards Rubina as we found her wailing loudly while the police were around but smiling while travelling in an auto-rickshaw within seconds of that,” said a senior investigator.

The suspects were nailed based on the evidence left behind by phone calls received on the victim’s number around the time of his murder.

Though a different SIM card was used to call Qureshi, police established that the mobile phone used belonged to Shahnawaz. He was immediately picked up for questioning during which he spilled the beans on the entire plan, said the police.

A divorcee and mother of four children, Rubina had married Qureshi’s father a few years ago. When Qureshi’s father passed away eight months ago, she allegedly saw an opportunity to bag his wholesale fruit business and property for her children.

“Rubina roped in Shahnawaz in the murder plan and offered him Rs.15 lakh if he could get rid of Qureshi,” said Madhur Verma, DCP (North).

Whether Rubina and Shahnawaz were in an affair and wanted an interfering Qureshi out of their way or money was the only motivating factor would be known in the subsequent interrogations, said the police.

In any case, Shahnawaz contacted two contract killers Sonu and Shahbaz to eliminate Qureshi. “They invited Qureshi to a Café Coffee Day outlet in Malkaganj where they offered him spiked coffee,” said Mr. Verma.

Not in a position to offer much resistance, Qureshi was taken on a motorcycle to an isolated spot where he was to be murdered.

Even as he was urinating on the roadside, Sonu restrained him with a rope around his neck while his uncle repeatedly stabbed him with an ice prick, police said. Finally, Shabaz used a knife to slit his throat and ensure he died.

Shahnawaz was arrested immediately after his confession, the police said. The two contract killers, suspected of more killings in the past, were nabbed at Shahnawaz’s instance. Rubina was arrested from Amroha in Uttar Pradesh where she had gone to cremate her stepson.

If Rubina and Shahnawaz had an affair will be known only after subsequent interrogations

Uncle among 3 held for boy's murder, plotted by step-mother

The accused has been identified as Shahnawaz, Shahbaz and Sonu. Rubina is the second wife of the deceased's father, who passed away eight months back, Mr Verma said."Shahnawaz was offered Rs 15 lakh to kill the deceased, out of which, Rs five lakh were meant for the contract killer," he added. On January 31, Shahnawaz called Anas to come at Sabji Mandi and offered him a coffee laced with sleeping pills during the meeting. Banker shot in head, cops quiz girl

A young Bokaro banker, driving home from work late on Tuesday night, was shot dead from point blank range in his car in front of a colleague, triggering several probe theories from a love affair to professional hazards.

Police have detained a young woman, who studies in Ranchi, and a youth for questioning in connection with the murder of Nishant Kumar Pansari (25) who was a resident of Chira Chas and worked as a credit manager at Bank of India's Sector IV branch.

According to Nishant's colleague, neighbour and lone eyewitness Rupesh Kumar, they had to work late on Tuesday because of the upcoming bank holidays.

"We started from our Sector IV office for our homes at Chira Chas around 10.35pm and were near Asha Lata Kendra (a school for the physically challenged) in Sector V some 10 minutes later when the incident took place," Rupesh said in his statement to police.

Two youths on a bike, Rupesh told police, rammed into Nishant's white Maruti Swift from behind in Sector V, 2.5km from Sector IV and a kilometre from their Chira Chas home. The unidentified duo then overtook the car to demand Rs 100 for damages sustained in the crash. "Nishant refused. The angry biker flashed a revolver and shot him in the head before he vroomed away with his aide," the eyewitness said.

Once he overcame the shock, Rupesh dialled other colleagues and together they took Nishant to Bokaro General Hospital, 3km away, but doctors declared the youth brought dead.

Senior police officers, including Bokaro SP Y.S. Ramesh, city DSP Ajay Kumar, Chas DSP Arvind Kumar and Sector V OC Nutan Modi, inspected the crime site on Wednesday morning.

DSP Ajay said they found it difficult to believe that the banker was shot dead for just Rs 100. "There has to be more motive and we are investigating four angles - a love affair gone awry, a land dispute, professional hazards and on-the-spot rage, the last as claimed by the witness," he said.

Sources in police maintained that on Wednesday afternoon, they had detained a 22-year-old woman who lives in Bokaro Thermal, but studies in a Ranchi college, and another youth from her neighbourhood.

Preliminary investigations have revealed that Nishant, a native of Gomia in Bokaro district, graduated from Marwari College in Ranchi. After he got a bank job, he moved with his parents, elder brother and his family to Kapila Enclave in Chira Chas.

Since his college days in 2011, Nishant had an affair with a girl, but her parents were against their relationship, a possible trigger for murder in a country where killing for caste and honour is not uncommon. Also, Nishant had recently bought a controversial plot of land in Gomia, which land sharks hadn't taken very kindly to.

DSP Ajay also pointed to loan gripes, a common hazard that bank professionals face when they don't sanction credit to a client. "We have to probe every angle and cannot jump to conclusions yet," the officer insisted.

Bereaved father Arun Lal Pansari, however, firmly believes that either Nishant's affair or interest in realty led to his untimely death. "My son was a good natured young man. He was loved by all. But, he shouldn't have met this girl or bought that cursed land," the elderly man sobbed.

Jilted lover planned Bokaro banker's murder: Police

Bokaro: Nishant Pansari, the 28-year-old bank employee who was killed on December 22 for not paying Rs 200, was murdered by hired goons, police said on Thursday. A Ranchi-based businessman was arrested in this connection on Thursday.

Pansari, who was a credit manager at Bank of India, was shot dead in Sector V when he was returning from a colleague's birthday party. The police said the murder was planned by Vikas Jaiswal, a former lover of Pansari's girlfriend. Jaiswal hired two shooters to carry out the killing.

The police earlier believed that Pansari's death was a case of road rage. The incident sent shock waves in the industrial town.

Call detail reports (CDR) of Pansari and his 25-year-old girlfriend's mobile phones helped the investigating team solve the case. Chas DSP Arvind Kumar Sinha, who headed the special team investigating the case, said, "We found out that he (Pansari) was in a relationship with the girl since 2012."

The girl, who is preparing for banking exams, knew Jaiswal since 2009 and they were in a relationship till the girl met Pansari in 2012. She started ignoring Jaiswal, but the police said her phone call details showed that the girl was still in touch with Jaiswal.

Bokaro SP Y S Ramesh said both the girl and Pansari were residents of Bokaro and the girl was planning to marry Pansari. "Jaiswal was married, but he sought divorce from his wife for the girl. Jaiswal had threatened to kill Pansari if the girl did not return to him, but she did not take heed. But Jaiswal decided to take revenge, got Pansari's photo and traced his house in Bokaro," said the SP.

Jaiswal then hatched a plan to kill Pansari and hired the two two goons. The men hit Pansari's car on the night of December 22 and then asked for Rs 200 in compensation. When Pansari refused to pay them, they shot him.

Crime Patrol: Ranchi school student death: Police yet to reach any conclusion (Episode 660, 661 on 21st, 22nd May 2016)

The petition by Parents' Association, demanding CBI inquiry and other steps for children’s security, may come up for hearing on Wednesday.

Even as Jharkhand Director General of Police D K Pandey on Monday visited Sapphire International School (SIS) in Ranchi in connection to the death of Binay Mahato, a Class VII student in the early hours of February 5, the police continued to maintain that they were yet to arrive at a conclusion about the cause of death in the case. Meanwhile, demand for ‘justice to Binay’ grew in the city with the parents’ association filing a PIL in the Jharkhand High Court. The petition, demanding CBI inquiry and other steps for children’s security, may come up for hearing on Wednesday. Several other organisations and students from different schools have been holding protests and candle march demanding justice for the 12-year-old boy. The local BJP MLA from Hatia, Naveen Jaiswal, had to beat retreat at Chanda Ghasi village, where Binay’s parents are currently staying. Pandey visited the School during the day, along with Inspector General (Ranchi Zone) and other senior officials. He also inspected the spot where Binay’s body was found. “We are working on all aspects. Men and officials from the local police, special branch and CID have been involved. We are hoping to get to the bottom of the case soon,” Pandey told reporters after his visit. He added that the police should not be bound by time factor.

Ranchi Senior Superintendent of Police Kuldeep Dwivedi, who is monitoring the investigations, said: “we are still working on all possibilities. At least 10 teams have been constituted. The teachers are still being questioned. As of now, we are neither in a position to confirm or deny that it was a case of murder or something else.” However, police sources claimed that the evidence so far indicated that there was strong possibility of the case being that of murder. “Not all instances of a fall from height are cases of suicide. We have discussed this possibility with the medical and forensic experts. We are not in a position to share these details, but there is evidence to suggest that somebody was involved,” said an officer associated with investigations. Binay was found dead in the early hours of February 5 in the teachers’ flats area. He had left the boys’ hostel, where he used to stay beyond midnight. His body was found in the teachers’ flats area, located over 700 metres from his hostel.

Ranchi: ‘Teacher’s son killed 12-yr-old, family covered it up’

The victim, identified as Binay Mahato, died after he was allegedly beaten up by the teacher’s 16-year-old son, a Class XI student.

A schoolteacher, her husband and two minor children were arrested on Wednesday for allegedly killing a 12-year-old student of the Sapphire International School (SIS), under Tupudana police station area in Ranchi, in the early hours of February 5. According to the police, the teacher, who also works at SIS, objected to the victim’s friendship with her minor daughter.

The victim, identified as Binay Mahato, died after he was allegedly beaten up by the teacher’s 16-year-old son, a Class XI student. The teacher and her son are alleged to have pushed an injured Mahato from the first floor. He was found unconscious on the ground floor, and died on the way to hospital.

According to the police, on February 4, the accused boy met Mahato, who lived in the school hostel, at the basketball court and invited him home. The teacher and her family live on the first floor of the staff quarters at the school.

“The accused boy asked Binay to come home at around 1 am as his mother was to prepare some delicacy, and he said he would keep some for him. He told him that his sister would also be present,” said Ranchi SSP Kuldeep Dwivedi, while retracing the sequence of events at a press conference here.

The hostel gates were reportedly open as the staff were busy with the annual day preparations.

Mahato is said to have left the hostel at around 1 am. “He has been caught on CCTV camera leaving the hostel. From another camera, we realised that he had abandoned the normal route, where barricades and guards were likely to be present. He took a detour from behind the principal’s house and went to the teachers’ quarters,” said Dwivedi.

“The teacher’s son answered the door. He took him to the dining area, where he raked up the issue of Binay’s friendship with his younger sister. He told Binay that he should stay away… Binay argued with him. The accused then gagged him with his hand and punched him a few times in the stomach, before repeatedly banging his head against the wall,” claimed Dwivedi.

Hearing the commotion, the teacher and her daughter, who were asleep, reportedly woke up and saw Mahato lying unconscious on the floor. “They tried to wash off the bloodstains, but were not sure what to do with Binay. They dragged him across the corridor and pushed him down from from the first floor. At around 1:38 am, a teacher who lives on the ground floor spotted the unconscious boy,” said the SSP.

According to the police, while Mahato was unconscious, the accused called up his father, who teaches at another international school in Ranchi and lives there. The father reportedly advised him to be careful and remove all possible evidence.

“While the injuries were inflicted by the accused boy, the teacher and her husband were aware of Binay’s friendship with their daughter. They had taken up the issue with Binay a couple of times, but the two continued to remain friends. The family was very angry about this. All the family members were involved in covering up the incident,” claimed Dwivedi.

All the accused have been charged under Sections 302 (murder), 201 (destruction of evidence) and 34 (furtherance of common intention) of the Indian Penal Code.

Initially, the police suspected the role of three teachers, who shared an apartment on the ground floor. The teacher who spotted Mahato was also among the suspects.

“The body was found outside their aparment and we recovered some things from their room which made us suspect their involvement, including the possibility of sexual abuse. However, the post-mortem report ruled that out. But, we still kept questioning them,” said Dwivedi.

According to the police, the breakthrough came when they examined the audio clips recorded on an Android-phone camera installed on the first floor. “The school has installed CCTV cameras in most places. Where they do not have CCTV, they have installed Android phones with cameras. However, these cannot record visuals at night. But it was the audio recording on that phone, at around the time of the incident, which made us suspect that somebody on the first floor could be involved,” said ASP (Hatia) Prashant Anand.

The audio clipping had sounds of something being cleaned, a grill gate being opened, and something falling with a thud, he added.

Crime Patrol: PLACEMENT PRESSURE DROVE VJTI STUDENT FROM HOME (Episode 658 on 15th May, 2015)

A passing remark by a fellow student at Veermata Jijabai Technological Institute (VJTI) - if only you had better marks, you could get a better package - sent 22-year-old Manasi Puranik skittering from her relaxed, settled life at Dadar all the way to Ernakulam, Kerala, a city she had no moorings in, even as her final eighth semester exams were starting.

The textile engineering student left home on the 16th of April, a seemingly uneventful morning that she spent studying and talking with friends, and was brought home on Wednesday night, after Shivaji Park police traced her via an ATM withdrawal.

Manasi's homecoming is a happy one - she walked out with only some clothes and a small sum in cash. "I reached CST, I asked the man at the counter which train was stationed at the platform. He told me it was the Kanyakumari Express. I asked him to give me a ticket to the biggest city in Kerala," said Manasi, which is how she arrived in Kochi.

Instead of crashing into the harsher realities of life, met only with strangers who offered her support and succour, including a local Kochi shop-worker who paid for her local hostel stay - her grateful family calls him Manasi's 'godfather'.

And even though it may seem that her existence is charmed, what drove Manasi to walk out is a tough lesson in the pressure cooker of student life. She'd left behind a letter saying she had disappointed her parents and was disappointed in herself - which had befuddled friends and family of the cheerful, outgoing young woman. After all she had a 6.9 CGPA at a prestigious city institute, and an offer of employment from one of the countries' blue-chip firms.

First placement

After tracing the young woman her uncle, Sanjay Bapat accompanied sub inspector Nilesh More to Kochi. Reunited, they had a long conversation. "She told me that after already scoring a CGPA of 6.9 out of 10, she did not know how much more to study to score better. As a family also we are planning to introspect on the kind of pressure we may have put on her unknowingly," Bapat said.

While academic pressure at the city's top institutes is well-documented, the final frenzy that surrounds campus placements is little understood. Parents who heed headlines announcing 7-figure packages sometimes expect their child will secure that sort of financial largesse.

Manasi's parents, as her closest friends vouch, are very easy-going, but she couldn't escape the cooker of placement pressure. Most of her friends speaking to Mirror on conditions of anonymity, said that even at VJTI, which has placed 90 per cent of its 700 students at companies, the stress is surreal.

"The problem is that of the internal competitiveness. Around the 100 plus students who had applied for Infosys, 20 had made it through. Manasi was one of the 20, which is an exceptional achievement," said a friend.

But Manasi's package was fixed at Rs 3.28 lakh - her stream, textile engineering, isn't one of the more lucrative ones, and there is a sense that you have to take what you can get. An engineering graduate now placed in Bangalore, said that the vast differential in packages companies offer creates a huge disjunction. "Those offering between Rs 6-8 lakh are called 'dream placements' while those below Rs 6 lakh are called 'regular companies'. Coining these terms automatically brings about competition. Everyone wants to get a dream job," he says.

The placement process begins with the commencement of the final semester. While some counselling by seniors and professors is available, companies start shortlisting and conducting interviews almost right away.

All the internal chatter between students at this time is how to grab a dream job. Two aptitude training books are the bible, but students are not coached on how to consider and reject an offer for its suitability.

"Those who do not have a suitable CGPA for 'dream companies', take up anything - if a student from textile engineering is offered a job in the IT field, he or she will take it in the fear of not having an offer at all," said one student.

There is also hedging involved - offers are rejected with the hope that a better company with a bigger offer will come along.

"So it is an entire gamble to ace the top placement at a company," said a student. Even after securing her placement, Manasi felt she had not put her best foot forward, and so made a run for it.

Kochi reunion

The frantic family had wanted to deposit further funds into Manasi's account, but on the advice of the police, who said she'd keep moving if she was flush with cash, had held back. The tip worked, and Manasi's location was tracked via an ATM transaction, said Asst Police Inspector Anil Jadhav.

She was seen on CCTV taking a left from the bank and so sub inspector More and her uncle Bapat retraced her steps, trying to simultaneously hurdle past the language barrier. At a local store's footage, the police spotted Manasi talking to a man pointing out a direction, giving her instructions.

"When we found the man he identified Manasi with her picture. She had come to his shop asking him if he had a phone worth Rs 1,000," Bapat said. The man said that Manasi then asked if she could get a job somewhere to fund her expenses. "He directed her to a Dominos Pizza outlet after which they parted ways."

But Manasi returned to the kind stranger again later asking for his help in finding a place to stay, and so he put down a Rs 2,500 deposit fee for Manasi at a lady's hostel, Bapat added, earning him the family's eternal gratitude, who are also full of praise for the police's commendable work.

Miles to go

Gangadhar Sonawane, senior police inspector recorded her statement and said she has been counselled to appear for her remaining exams. "We will also be contacting the college management to request them to let her reappear for the two papers she has missed," Sonawane said.

Director of VJTI OG Kakade however, is uncertain of what lies ahead for Manasi. "We will take a decision as per what fits in the institute's norms," said O G Kakade, director of VJTI Institute.

As for Manasi, she says she should have shared her problems about placement with a relative or her parents instead of running away from them. "I will never set out of Mumbai alone again," she said.

Crime Patrol: Snapdeal employee abduction case: Main accused inspired by SRK film ‘Darr’ (Episode 656, 657 on 13th, 14th May, 2015)

According to her statement, she was abducted from an isolated spot near the Raj Nagar extension area, at knife point.

Five days after e-commerce senior executive Dipti Sarna (24) was abducted on her way home in Ghaziabad, five men were arrested in connection with the case. Police said the prime accused and mastermind of the plan had been following her for months and was inspired by Shahrukh Khan’s movie, Darr. Speaking to mediapersons Monday afternoon, Ghaziabad Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Dharmendra Singh, said, “The accused had first spotted the woman at Rajiv Chowk Metro station about a year ago. He hatched this plan to win her over. During questioning, the prime accused revealed that he was deeply inspired by the movie Darr. He began tracking her movement and involved four other men from his village. He shifted to a rented accommodation in Khoda colony and drove auto-rickshaws from Vaishali Metro station to Ghaziabad.” -

Dipti, on the other hand, declined to comment on the case, maintaining that she had told the police everything.

Accompanied by her parents and her brother at Sihani Gate police station in Ghaziabad, she said, “I hope that measures are taken so that no other person undergoes the ordeal that I have faced.”

According to the police, prime accused Devendra, a resident of Sonepat, has around 30 cases against him related to robbery, attempt to murder and kidnapping.

Police said he had fled from custody in June 2014 with the help of his brother and had been in hiding ever since. “We received a tip-off that Devendra might be associated with this case. Since he had fled from police custody in Haryana earlier and there had been several cases of attempt to murder, kidnapping and robbery against him, he was on the police radar. We managed to get hold of some of his identity cards which had his photo. That photo was shown to Dipti who identified him,” said Singh. Recounting the events on the night of February 10, police said Devendra, along with the other accused, waited for her in an auto-rickshaw outside the station.

When Dipti boarded another auto-rickshaw, the accused managed to puncture the vehicle’s tyres. “They knew when Dipti would reach the Metro station and from where she would board an auto-rickshaw as they had been tracking her movements for three months.

They had parked two auto-rickshaws, which they purchased earlier, at the same spot. But Dipti boarded another one. Near Sahibabad’s vegetable market, they managed to puncture that auto’s tyre following which Dipti and another woman sat in the accused’s auto-rickshaw,” said Singh.

The accused forced the other woman out of the vehicle at knife-point near Hindon Bridge, said police. “This happened at about 8.20 pm. They threatened Dipti and took her towards Morti village. They hid her bag and mobile phone on the way.

When they reached Farrukh Nagar, the auto-rickshaw ran out of CNG. Devendra then called his brother who provided his i10 car,” said Singh.

The car broke down near Kheda Atana after it got stuck in sand near Yamuna Bank. “They took Dipti and crossed the Yamuna on foot. She was kept in a sugarcane field the entire day. The main accused, meanwhile, tried to talk to Dipti and convince her that he was trying to save her from the other accused.

When his efforts went in vain, he dropped Dipti at a railway station on February 12 from where she boarded a train. She called her family using a co-passenger’s phone.

“The entire plan of the accused was to be seen as a ‘hero’ by Dipti. He had told his associates that he wanted to steal Rs 3 to 4 crore from Dipti’s house and that she had a set of house keys,” said the SSP.

Police identified the others arrested in the case as Pradeep, Mohit, Fayim and Majid.

Police also recovered a Swift with a Delhi number plate, the i10, two UP-registered auto-rickshaws, a 0.32 countrymade pistol with eight cartridges, a 0.315 countrymade pistol with six cartridges, Dipti’s Dell laptop, her Fossil watch, Snapdeal icard, ATM, black bag, tiffin box.

The victim, Dileep Kundanmal Jain (40), an electric shop owner residing at Kasar Ali in Bhiwandi, was murdered by some persons in the wee hours of May 24 before they decamped with cash and jewellery worth Rs 1.25 lakhs, inspector Shailendra Nagarkar of Bhiwandi police crime branch said.

Later, Dileep's wife Payal Jain (35) filed a complaint with local police that some miscreants had entered into their house who killed her husband and took away the valuables.

The police, during probe in the case, examined the CCTV footage of a nearby location and based on the clues gathered from it, a police team was sent to Rajasthan.

Based on further clues, the police arrested the killers - Ratanlal alias Ratan Mulchand Kothari (39) and Sohansingh Hemantsingh Rajput (28) - on Sunday from Virar, Nagarkar said.

Both of them latter confessed to the crime, he said.

On the basis of information provided by them, police arrested Payal from her residence and her maid servant Manjula Mukeshkumar Gomatilal (35) from Rajasthan for allegedly hatching the conspiracy and hiring the men to kill Dileep, he said.

Police are on the lookout of another accused in the case, Pappu alias Laxman, a grocery shop in Rabodi of Thane city who is the brother of the maid servant, he said.

Nagarkar said the couple frequently quarreled over various issues and Payal apparently eyed the property of her father-in-law in Rajasthan.

She decided to get rid of her husband and hence arranged for his 'contract killing' with the help of her maid, the latter's brother and two other killers, he said.

She promised the killers to pay them Rs 10 lakhs, but they got only Rs one lakh after the execution of the crime.

Meanwhile, the accused have been booked under sections 302 (murder), 394 (voluntarily causing hurt in committing robbery), 341 (wrongful restraint) read with 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of the IPC, police said.

The accused have been remand in police custody for a week, they added.

Crime Patrol: Delhi Man Killed His Girlfriend, Hid Her Corpse And Married Another Woman (Episode 652 on 1st May, 2016)

NEW DELHI -- It was a love story that went horribly wrong. She was 21, just about to graduate from college this spring. He was 23, and had been dating her and wanted to marry her. But when the couple's families objected, he decided to move on.

She didn't.

It was four months ago when Arzoo Singh Chauhan, a final-year, Hindi Honours student in Delhi University's Laxmibai college, and Naveen Khatri, her 23-year-old neighbour from north Delhi, had to part ways after their families refused to get them married to each other. While reports suggest that they continued to meet in secret, Khatri's family had other plans for their son.

They soon found a match for him and fixed a date for his marriage. According to the police, Khatri met Chauhan outside her college last Tuesday, and even asked her to help him distribute the invitations for his marriage on 4 February. Sometime during this meeting, an altercation broke out between them, and he allegedly ended up strangling Chauhan with a shawl.

A purse near the international airport, and a solitary shoe that seemingly fell from Chauhan's feet a little further away are the only remnants of the alleged struggle between the ex-lovers that resulted in Chauhan's death.

Delhi police believe that Khatri panicked, and unsuccessfully tried to burn the body, and then packed it into the trunk of the car he was driving, unsure where to hide it. He allegedly then drove home that evening, leaving the body in the car overnight until the crack of dawn, when he woke up and apparently dragged the body to his house where he hid it in a ventilation shaft. The police are still investigating whether he confided in anyone else following the murder. Joint commissioner of police, Sanjay Singh, has told The Indian Express that Khatri has named an accomplice during interrogation but their role hasn't been established yet.

It did not end there. Two days later, Khatri got married, all the time spraying his house with the dozens of bottles of perfume he had bought to hide the stench of the decomposing body. His wedding guests reportedly teased him about it, assuming that his strange action was the result of his excitement about getting married.

Meanwhile, after Chauhan did not return home, her parents lodged a missing complaint, which ultimately led to Khatri. By the time the police arrived, he had left for the airport with his new wife, who was unaware that the "stench" she had complained about the previous night was actually the rotting corpse of her husband's ex-girlfriend.

When investigators caught up with Khatri and detained him at the airport, he claimed that Singh had been pressuring him to marry her against their families' wishes, and even claimed that she was pregnant. The preliminary autopsy report has revealed that she was not pregnant, and that she had indeed died of asphyxiation. Besides the wounds on her body, her side of the story will never be fully known.

Police also suspect the involvement of Khatri's father, who is a murder convict in a separate case, and has been in jail since 2005. He was out on parole to attend his son's wedding and is suspected to have helped his son hide Singh's body. Police are yet to formally charge him in the case.
