Crime Patrol: City cardiologist found dead (Episode 97, 98 on 30, 31 march 2012)

Inside Story
Dera Bassi (Dec 22, 2011): Chandigarh-based cardiologist Deepak Kaura, who had gone missing since 9 pm on Tuesday, was found dead in his car near Dera Bassi on Hebatpur Link Road on Wednesday afternoon. The doctor’s cell phone, car keys, a diamond ring and a gold chain were found missing from the spot. Police have filed a case of murder against two unknown persons, including one woman, on a complaint filed by the father of the deceased, Harimohan Kaura. The body was shifted to Dera Bassi civil hospital, where post-mortem will take place on Thursday.

Dr Kaura’s SUV Tata Aria car was reportedly parked in front of an under-construction Green City colony, about 1 km from NH-22, since last late night. Suspicious that the car should be parked at that spot for so long, a property dealer in the area, Pintoo, got in touch with police around 1.30 pm, saying that he found a man sleeping inside the car with a blanket over his body. Pintoo said that he knocked on the car but got no response. Dera Bassi SHO Gurdial Singh reached the spot, to find that the car was not locked. Both rear seats were folded into a bed, and the body was found lying face-down on the seats. Police recovered an almost-empty bottle of 100 Piper Whisky too. Police identified Dr Deepak Kaura with the help of car documents. They also found a phone number, which was of his residence. Deepak Kaura, 49, was a resident of Sector 19, Chandigarh. He had been running a multispecialty hospital named Oxford near his house. His father Harimohan and hospital staff had no clue of his whereabouts since 9 pm on Tuesday, when he left the hospital. The body was found with blue lashes on it, and signs of bleeding from the nose.

The dead doctor’s father said he was worried after he found that he could not reach his son over the cell phone. A diamond ring, a gold chain, cell phone and a small bag containing a cheque book and other articles were found missing; however, Rs 24,700 was recovered from the doctor’s pocket in cash. The dead doctor’s father feared that his son had been kidnapped and killed. Dera Bassi DSP Anil Kumar, CIA Kharar in-charge Gurcharan Singh and Bhupinder Singh, SP (D), Mohali also reached at the spot. Investigations at the spot continued for four hours. Even though there was suspicion that the case could have been one of suicide, the police have begun investigations and have filed a case of murder against two unknown persons. SP Bhupinder said the cause of death would be established by the post-mortem.

A suspicious background

Dr Kaura remains controversial, in life and in death. In January 2005, his wife, also a doctor, Dr Babita Kaura, alias Dolly, an assistant professor at PGI’s immunopathology department, committed suicide by jumping from her third-floor residence in Sector 24 on January 18 night in 2005. Dr Kaura was convicted to 4-year-imprisonment for creating circumstances that led his wife to commit suicide by a local court on July 12, 2010. However, later he was granted bail by Punjab and Haryana High Court Nov 29, 2010. He was out on bail, later. Dr Kaura is survived by two children Karan, an MBBS student, Elly, a class 10 student and his father Dr HM Kaura. They are living in Sector 19 house. Sources said Dr Kaura had been engaged to a woman working in Canada. After the engagement, his fiancée left for Canada on December 18.

Hospital silent after the news of its doc death

Work at Oxford Hospital, Sector 19, came to a standstill after the death of Dr Deepak Kaura.

There was silence in the hospital as the staff and patients were visibly upset. The nurse sitting at the reception could not help crying while continuing with her work there.

Several patients who had to undergo operation were reportedly asked to wait for some time. “He was a very good doctor. He used to treat our patients with utmost care with full dedication,” said a ward of a heart patient.

“He was looking after my wife who is a heart patient. We appreciate the way he helped us during treatment. We will miss such a nice doctor,” Sandeep Kumar told reporters outside the hospital.

Staff members said before leaving his house at about 9 pm on Tuesday, he told them he was going to buy mutton from Sector 22 and asked them to prepare onions for that.

However, he did not come back as family got the shocking news of his death in the afternoon.

Baby Falak who died of a heart attack cremated by her mother

New Delhi (March 16, 2012):  Baby Falak was buried in Delhi today by her mother, Munni. The two-year-old died in Delhi's AIIMS hospital last night after a heart attack, her third in the two months that she spent there. Doctors at the hospital, where Falak went through multiple surgeries, had handed her over to her mother, Munni.

"Her mother had come over and was handed over the body at around 4.30 PM. They then left the premises for the cremation," Deepak Agrawal, Assistant Professor of Neurosurgery at

the AIIMS Trauma Centre, who has been attending on Falak from the day she was admitted there, said.

Falak was being monitored by the Child Welfare Committee, and the officials had asked for an inquiry on her death. That could take till tomorrow to complete.
Falak was introduced to India under circumstances that made the country sick with anger. She was brought to AIIMS by a young teen who had been looking after her. Her face had been bitten, her head had repeatedly been smashed into a wall, and her chest showed burn marks from a hot clothes iron. The nurses who tended to her at the Intensive Care Unit named her Falak meaning "the sky." In recent weeks, doctors had said Falak was showing healthy signs of recovery and was strong enough to leave hospital. But because nobody requested them for her custody, she was moved to the general ward. Yesterday, her heart beat fluctuated all day. Then last evening, she had a heart attack. "It happened all of a sudden. She was sleeping in her bed when the cardiac arrest occurred," Dr Agrawal said.

Two earlier cardiac arrests had weakened her heart greatly. For 40 minutes, doctors tried to revive her. Finally, they gave up. "Since hers (Falak) was a medico-legal case, a post-morterm was conducted. The cardiac arrest happened due to due cardiac arrhythmia, a disorder of the heart rate when the heart beats too quickly," he said.

Till Falak met the doctors and nurses who devoted their days and nights to her, the baby had known only a world of unimaginable neglect and horror. Her mother's story is one that shames India repeatedly - she couldn't afford to look after her three children. So after being passed from one disinterested adult to another, Falak's last few weeks before being admitted to hospital were with a teen living with a married man. The young girl abused her after the man she had eloped with took off to see his wife and children.

A long police search located Falak's mother, named Munni, in Rajasthan. Munni originally lived in Bihar with her husband and three children, including Falak. Then her husband left her. Munni was lured to Delhi by a gang who trafficked sex workers. She refused to prostitute herself, so the women in the gang arranged a marriage for her to a man in Rajasthan. They brokered the deal, unknown to Munni, for two lakhs. They said she should leave her children behind, and that once she settled into her new life, her husband would be persuaded to accept them. The women then divided up the children. Falak's sister was sent home to Bihar. Her brother is five-years-old. And Falak was passed from one adult to another, all known to the gang of traffickers, till she ended up with the teen who brought her to AIIMS.

Falak's mother visited her once in hospital. She broke down after she saw her baby. She has been staying at a shelter for women run by an NGO.

The Child Welfare Committee was to decide whose custody Falak would be placed in once she left AIIMS.

Crime Patrol: Well Planned Murder Of Ramakrishna Pai - Episode 94 - 17th March 2012

The Inside Story

BANGALORE:

The Jayanagar police cracked the murder case of Shankar Pujari, 55, who was the chief manager with the regional office of Oriental Bank of Commerce on M G Road. The murder was reported at Pujari’s residence near Yediyur on September 25. Police sources said that the two accused in the murder, worked at Shanthi Upahara hotel near Pujari’s residence.

Pujari daily visited the hotel for breakfast and dinner, as his wife and daughter stayed in Mumbai.

“Based on several leads, the duo was taken into custody on Tuesday. Natives of Mysore and Mandya, the duo had gone missing from the day the murder was reported. The duo were known to the victim and it was confirmed on the day the murder came to light, that acquaintances of the victim were behind the murder, as there was no forcible entry into the house. Also, other circumstantial evidences prove their involvement in the murder. Hence, the duo were arrested,” sources said.

It is said that one of them was a cook, while the other prepared ‘rotis’ in the hotel. The police are thoroughly questioning them and have not ruled out the chances of involvement of a few others in the murder plot.

Though the exact reason for the murder is yet to be ascertained, the police have strongly suspected that it could be a case of murder for monetary gain.

It may be recalled that Pujari was gagged and smothered to death at his residence in Yediyur on September 25 earlier this year.

Wrong track delayed murder probe

Investigation into the murder of Oriental Bank manager Shankar Poojari has revealed that his killers did not intend to kill him. The two eatery employees killed him to avoid being reported to the police when Poojari recognised one of them after yanking off one of their monkey cap when they were trying to rob him at his home in Yediyur.

The incident took place on September 25, 2011. The two attackers—Jayakumar alias Anil, 24, and KM Yogesh, 21—who worked as cooks in New Shanti Sagar Hotel near Poojari’s residence in Yediyur—were arrested on December 30, after an initial probe unsuccessfully pursued Poojari’s alleged illicit relation with a woman as the cause of his murder. The wrong line of investigation was taken after a preliminary inspection at the murder spot revealed a condom packet in the deceased’s pocket, an investigating officer told DNA.

However, a sustained suspicion by one of the investigating officers that this murder could be the outcome of a failed attempt of robbery brought the probe back on the right track to finally yield the required results.

The revised investigations revealed that Poojari, a native of Kundapura, used to frequent New Shanti Sagar Hotel in Yediyur, on Kanakapura Road, and had befriended many employees at the eatery.

A thorough probe also revealed that two of the hotel cooks were absent from work on the day of Poojari’s killing and the day after. But they had resumed duty to avoid raising suspicions among the investigators over their prolonged absence from work just after Poojari’s murder.

Jayakumar and Yogesh were then taken into custody and questioned, which revealed that they had killed Poojari only after he had removed the monkey cap of one of them and had recognised him when they were attempting to rob him. The two had hidden themselves on the terrace of the building Poojari used to live in, waiting for him to return from dinner.

Upon his arrival, when Poojari opened the door to his apartment to enter, the duo pounced on him and took him inside his apartment, closing the door behind him.

In the ensuing scuffle between Poojari and his attackers, the former managed to pull away one of their monkey caps, which they wore to prevent him from recognising them.

Once exposed, they strangulated him after stabbing him in the abdomen. A deep mark caused by a sharp instrument—the knife carried by the attackers—on the side of Poojari’s throat indicated that the two had held him at knife-point for a long time, and could have killed him earlier had they intended to do so, the police said.

The accused also revealed that they befriended Poojari when he used to visit them and even watch television with the hotel employees.

The attackers could only get a gold chain and Rs3,500 in cash from Poojari’s house.
