Crime Patrol: Woman rescued hours after abduction in Gandhinagar (Episode 263 on 28th June 2013)

The Inside Story
Cops say abductor wanted to marry the woman who belongs to Ranchi and works in an IT company in the state capital

The Gandhinagar police on Sunday rescued a 23-year-old woman hours after she was abducted from outside her office in the capital on Sunday afternoon.

The police said the woman, a native of Ranchi in Jharkhand, was abducted by four men, one of whom — identified as Dara Hardayal Singh — wanted to marry her.

They said Singh, who belongs to Madhya Pradesh, is a passout of IIT Mumbai and is based in that city. He had allegedly proposed to the woman for marriage on many occasions, which she had rejected.

Around 2 pm this afternoon, when the woman came out of her office along with a colleague, Singh and his three friends pulled her inside a Chevrolet Tavera and fled, police said.

Her colleague informed the police immediately and a team from the Sector 7

police station rushed to the spot. Soon, several teams of the Gandhinagar police were pressed into service and the abductors were

intercepted at Kheda after two hours. The four have been arrested.

Police said Singh had hired the car from MP to abduct the woman and take her to MP. They said the two knew each other from their college days and both were in touch with each other.

"Singh wanted to marry the girl for a long time, but she was not interested. She had complained to her father who had spoken to Singh's father but nothing helped. The girl's family did not file any complaint thinking he would not harm her. However, when she started avoiding his calls, he abducted her," said police inspector S S Gadhvi.

"We will record statements of the girl that would clarify what was the problem between them. The girl's parents are coming to Gandhinagar to give statements," he added.

Crime Patrol: Boy whose ‘murder’ sparked Bihar riots surfaces in Delhi (Episode 261, 262 on 22, 23 June 2013)

PART 1

PART 2

The Inside Story
PATNA: In a climax that evoked extreme feelings of pain and pleasure simultaneously across the state, Madhubani schoolboy Prashant Jha, whose purported murder led to the loss of at least two lives in a bloody battle between police and people of the district, was spotted and detained along with his girlfriend Preeti Choudhary by the police in Mehrauli near New Delhi on Monday.

“I spoke to the couple to ascertain their identity as well as inspector Jarnail Singh of the Mehrauli police station where they have been kept. They said they want to live and die together,” DGP Abhayanand said and added the boy and the girl would be brought back to the state after their production in a juvenile court in Delhi.

Prashant, son of grocery shop owner Rajiv Kumar Jha, is a resident of Arer village in Madhubani district. Preeti is a native of Mahishi in Saharsa district, but was living in Madhubani where her father Jagatpati Choudhary was the district programme officer. They were Class X students of Madhubani’s Indian Public School.

Police said the boy and the girl escaped from their respective houses on September 7 following which the boy’s family lodged a ‘missing’ complaint the same day with the police while the girl’s father lodged an FIR on September 11, accusing Prashant of kidnapping his daughter. Acting on the FIR, police even arrested Prashant’s grandfather.

Amid allegations that the police were harsh against the Jhas as the girl happened to be related to Darbhanga IG R K Mishra, the police recovered a headless body on October 3 and the Jhas recognized it as Prashant’s. However, the police refused to hand over the body to them saying it was of a 25-year-old while Prashant was not that old.

With the boy’s mother and grandmother sitting on hunger strike against “police excesses”, the situation turned worse as the Jhas’ sympathizers, including Prashant’s friends, resorted to violence and vandalism. Several government vehicles and buildings were set afire. The police had to open fire on October 12 and 13, and two people were killed in the firing. A worried state government transferred the DM, SP and the district programme officer.

Under pressure from all quarters, the police also handed over the beheaded body to the Jhas who cremated it. Ironically, the state’s opposition parties were enforcing a statewide bandh against the police firing and Prashant’s father was on way to Gaya to perform cremation rituals on Monday when reports came in that Prashant along with Preeti was shopping in a readymade garment shop in Mehrauli.

“On the basis of the mobile call details of the boy, the Madhubani police had initially tracked their location near a cellphone shop in Muzaffarpur,” the DGP said. After questioning the shopkeeper, the police came to know that Prashant had sold his mobile for Rs 320 and then the duo had boarded a train.

Their interrogation over phone revealed they travelled from Muzaffarpur to Ranchi, Jammu & Kashmir and Darjeeling and then to Delhi. When an old man from Bihar, who had read about the Madhubani incident, spotted them at a garment shop on Monday, he questioned them and dialled 100. Soon a Mehrauli police team reached the spot and took them under custody. They could do all the travelling because the girl had been reportedly carrying Rs 3 lakh with her.

Crime Patrol: After losing Rs. 30 lakh in IPL betting, this MBA kidnapped and brutally killed his 13-year-old cousin

The Inside Story
Mumbai: Desperate after losing Rs. 30 lakh in illegal betting in the ongoing Indian Premier League, an MBA graduate in Mumbai kidnapped his 13-year-old cousin, hoping to recover the money as ransom from his affluent parents. However, when the parents of the boy informed the police, the accused panicked and brutally killed the teenager.

The accused, Himanshu Ranka, pretending to be a friend of 13-year-old Aditya's father, on Monday called the teenager and asked him to collect the keys of his father's office.

Later in the afternoon, Aditya's family received a ransom call demanding Rs. 30 lakh, following which his father, Jitendra Ranka, approached the police.

On his way back after meeting a senior police officer, Mr Ranka discovered a pair of slippers that he had bought for Aditya from Dubai in a car that his nephew Himanshu had hired from a friend.

Mr Ranka immediately alerted the cops who seized the car and found blood stains under its bonnet.

During interrogation, Himanshu revealed how he had hatched a conspiracy to kidnap Aditya as he was desperate for money.

Himanshu told the police that his accomplice, Bijesh Sanghvi, had first taken Aditya to Sion in central Mumbai and then to the Raigad district of Maharashtra.

After learning that the family had alerted the police, the two men decided to kill Aditya, and Bijesh slit his wrist.

Later, when Bijesh discovered that Aditya was still alive, he took him to Panvel on the outskirts of Mumbai and set him ablaze on dry grass.

Both Himanshu and Bijesh have been arrested and have confessed to the crime.

Shaitaan - A Criminal Mind: Dharavi man murders wife in UP, daughters in Kolkata (Episode 46 on 16th June 2013)

The Inside Story
Abida Khatun (40), a widow, was living in Dharavi with her two daughters Sabiya (11) and Aalia (7). This family, or rather the Rs 9-lakh house they were residing in, managed to sweep 27-year-old Esteeyak Khan completely off his feet. Esteeyak, who was a labourer in a purse-making factory in the neighbourhood, soon married Abida.

27-year-old Esteeyak Khan in police custody after killing his wife and stepdaughters

A few months later he forced his wife to sell the house on the pretext of plans to settle in Uttar Pradesh. On Jan 25, 2012 Esteeyak took his wife and stepdaughters to Kolkata. DCP, zone IV, Dhananjay Kulkarni said, “The accused tricked Abida, as she was led to believe that the four were on their way to the offender’s hometown in UP.”

Abida Khatun was allegedly murdered by her husband in UP last year, who then threw her body on the railway tracks

He added, “The family landed in Kolkata and stayed there for a while. By then Abida had spent Rs 2 lakh of the total nine.” According to the police officials, Esteeyak was already married to someone in Uttar Pradesh, which Abida was unaware off.

Later, he asked his new wife to accompany him to UP, leaving her two daughters in Kolkata, ‘to buy a plot or house in the state where they could settle’. Kulkarni added, “On their way to Uttar Pradesh, the accused strangulated her with a dupatta and threw her body on the railway tracks. The area falls under the jurisdiction of Lalori police station (UP).”

Esteeyak wasn’t finished. “After murdering Abida, the accused went back to Kolkata and gave the two young girls soft drinks laced with poison. He threw Aalia’s body onto the railway tracks, and Sabiya’s into a garbage dump,” Kulkarni said.

Dharavi police has recovered Rs 7 lakh from the accused, who has been booked under sections 302 (punishment for murder) and 201 (causing disappearance of evidence of offence, or giving false information). He has been moved to Kolkata for further investigations, as a case of murder is registered against him there, while earlier an accidental death report (ADR) was lodged with Lalori police station.

Crime Patrol: Cops solve astrologer’s murder case, arrest three (Episode 256, 257 on 8th, 9th June 2013)

Part 1

Part 2

The Inside Story
Nov 22, 2012,

Cops solve astrologer’s murder case, arrest three

Different enemies ganged up to plan the murder, arrange shooters

The police today claimed to have worked out the case of VIP astrologer Ramesh Tiwari's murder after arresting three men in Jaunpur district.

Tiwari was shot dead by two motorcycle-borne youths in police uniform using a carbine and a pistol outside his house in Oonchgaon village of Sarpataha area on November 15. Additional DG (ADG) Law & Order Arun Kumar said Tiwari and his brothers had disputes over different matters with some people in the area who formed a group and hatched the murder conspiracy.

The disputes over panchayat elections, contract for construction of Kasturba Gandhi school in Oonchgaon and altercation with some locals during the last few months have come out as reasons behind Tiwari's murder, said the ADG. He said that three conspirators — Vijay Bahadur Singh, Kaushal Kishore Singh and Virendra Bahadur Singh alias Dadhi — who provided shelter to the shooters have been arrested while six others are absconding. They are Dhirendra Singh, his father Jharkhandi Singh, Amit alias Pandit and Lalshanker Upadhyay alias Bachai and the two shooters.

The police said that Dhirendra, who owns Maa Tara nursing home in Jaunpur city, was the main conspirator.

His father had lost election of gram pradhan to Tiwari's father Rajendra Prasad in the last panchayat election. This had led to an enmity between Tiwari and Dhirendra.

Tiwari and his brothers also had an altercation with Bachai and Amit of their village over contract of construction of a school building.

To settle score with Tiwari, Dhirendra and others planned the murder and hired the shooters. The shooters stayed at Dhirendra's associates (Virendra's) house in Oonchgaon while Vijay Bahadur, Bachai and Virendra's nephew Kaushal conducted recce with the shooters. Bachai informed the shooters about Tiwari's presence outside his house, while Vijay Bahadur made calls to others giving information about the murder, said police.

Nov 22, 2012,

Jaunpur police cracks astrologer murder case

LUCKNOW: The Jaunpur police and the Special Task Force (STF) on Wednesday claimed to have solved the high-profile astrologer Ramesh Tewari murder case by arresting three persons who allegedly plotted the killing. Tewari, who had links with a number of top politicians, businessmen and bureaucrats, was shot on November 15 in front of his ancestral house at Oonchgaon village in Jaunpur, 225 km from Lucknow.

Investigators say Tewari's meteoric rise had left his rivals in the village envious. More so because, using his contacts in the corridors of power, Ramesh had allegedly started taking active interest in each and every dispute of the village. The envy turned into bitter rivalry and this eventually resulted in the crime executed by contract killers from Azamgarh, the police say.

Additional director general (law & order) Arun Kumar said investigations were under way to round up the remaining five accused. "We have some details of the contract killers who executed the killing but we are not identifying them as it may hamper further investigations," he said. The ADG however confirmed that the killers hailed from the region adjoining Azamgarh district.

What has shocked the investigators is the fact that almost 20 families of the village were aware of the murder conspiracy for at least two days before the crime took place. "The assailants had even visited the village on November 13 with a local resident Bachai Upadhyay and held a detailed recce of Tewari's house and the roads leading out of the village to trace the getaway routes in case of any emergency," said Jaunpur police chief Manzil Saini. "Later they were introduced to Vijay Bahadur Singh - the former pradhan of Bhiti Amari village in Qadipur police circle of Sultanpur district. The duo spent the night at Bahadur's house," Saini said.

On November 15, the assailants again reached Oonchgaon with Vijay and met Bachai Upadhyay. Thereafter, the two contract killers were escorted to the venue of a Ram Leela that was to be inaugurated by Ramesh in the evening. The assailants saw his from close quarters there. Thereafter, they were escorted to the house of the Oonchgaon's former pradahn Jharkhande Singh -- one of the main rivals of Ramesh. "The assailants spent the night at the house of Virendra Singh alias Dardhi in the same village," said Saini, who spearheaded the investigations.

On the day of the murder, the duo left Virendra's house even before the day-break on a brand new Discover motorcycle they had bought a day before. Bachai Upadhyay followed suit. Bachai deputed a local resident Kaushal Kishore (a nephew of Virendra Singh) to inform him when Ramesh comes out of his house to meet the villagers -- a daily routine that the astrologer followed without fail during his stay in the village. Once Kaushal Kishore informed Bachai about Ramesh's presence outside his house, he signaled the assailants who reached the spot and shot him from a very close range.

The breakthough came after investigators discovered a call made from the Oonchgaon village some 20 minutes before the murder. The call was traced to a local resident Kaushal Kishore. The person who received the call was Bachai who was at that time present with the contract killers.

"Police have arrested Vijay Bahadur Singh, Virendra Bahadur alias Dardhi and his nephew Kaushal Kishore and efforts are on to trace and arrest the remaining accused, including the assailants. Apart from Jharkhande Sigh, his son Dhirendra Singh was also actively involved in the conspiracy and some more names are expected to come to light once we nab the accused identified so far," Manzil Saini said. "We have conflicting information about the amount of money paid for the killing and the names who contributed the money. However, it's confirmed that a hefty amount was paid for the crime," she said.

Shaitaan - A Criminal Mind: How daughter conspired with friend to defraud and kill her own father (Episode 44 on 9th June 2013)

The Inside Story
New Delhi : A woman and her friend, were convicted for usurping her father’s property by fabricating documents and selling it, have been sentenced to seven years in jail by a Delhi court, which acquitted them of the charge of killing the 75-year-old man as his body could not be recovered.

Additional sessions judge Rajeev Bansal awarded the jail term to Niti Sarin and her friend Gulfam Ahmed, residents of East of Kailash here, for conspiring and fabricating the Power of Attorney issued by her father S S Marwah and then selling the property to Gulfam. The court also imposed Rs 35,000 fine each on both of them. Gulfam had got Marwah’s East of Kailash building demolished and after fresh construction, sold it floor-wise to other persons and destroyed the forged General Power of Attorney. “This is an unfortunate case in which a daughter (Niti) has conspired with co-convict Gulfam to fabricate the Power of Attorney purportedly issued by her father in her name for the purpose of usurping his property and succeeded in her ill design. The convict is an educated lady and she is the only child of S S Marwah, who was 75-year-old when he was reported missing on May 18, 2006. “This circumstance makes the offence of fabrication of Power of Attorney all the more heinous. The whereabouts of S S Marwah are not known till date, although, for lack of evidence, she has been acquitted on the charge of patricide of her septuagenarian father,” the judge said. According to police, Marwah had bequeathed his property in favour of his grandchildren (Niti’s children). And after her husband mysteriously disappeared in 2004, Niti came in contact with Gulfam and hatched a conspiracy to usurp her father’s property by allegedly killing him.

Gulfam along with accused Ran Singh, Mohd Aarif and Rohtas had hatched the murder plan, police said. Ran Singh, Mohd Aarif and Rohtas were acquitted by the court due to lack of evidence against them. Police said all the accused who had killed Marwah on May 16, 2006 and disposed his body in Gang Nahar in Meerut and thereafter, Niti had lodged a missing report of her father at Lajpat Nagar police station.

Police had said that all efforts were made but Marwah could not be traced. In February 2009, police received information that Marwah was allegedly killed by Niti, Gulfam and other accused. During interrogation, police came to know about the involvement of one J Chawla who was stated to have prepared a forged General Power of Attorney on March 21, 2001 in the name of Niti. Police said that on the basis of that forged GPA, she had executed a sale-deed in favour of Gulfam. Gulfam then entered into a collaboration agreement with Chawla and thereafter the building was demolished. The court acquitted the other four accused of all the charges due to lack of proper evidence.

Crime Patrol: Groom shot dead on his wedding (Episode 255 on 7th June 2013)

The Inside Story
Spurned lover kills groom at wedding venue

Jan 21, 2013, 03.02AM IST

HALISAHAR: A 22-year-old IT employee was fatally shot by his bride's former lover minutes after 'sindur-daan' (applying of vermillion on the forehead) at Nabanagar near Haslisahar, around 65 km from Kolkata, on Saturday evening. Hundreds of wedding guests watched in horror as the groom collapsed in a pool of blood. They then took hold of the killer and beat him up till the police rescued him and took him to hospital, where he succumbed to injuries.

Souvik Dey, 22, and Sunita Sarkar, 20, were getting married after a year-long affair. Unknown to them, Rajib Bose, 28, with whom Sunita had been in a relationship earlier was hiding among the wedding guests. The bride and groom had just gone through the rituals when Rajib, his face covered in a muffler, took out a gun and shot Souvik. Souvik collapsed with a wound on his forehead. He was taken to Kalyani Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Hospital, but was declared brought dead.

According to local residents, Rajib lived in Kanchrapara and worked in a garments shop. He had an affair with Sunita, but she broke up with him early last year. Sunita then met Souvik, who worked in a Salt Lake Sector V IT firm. "It was love at first sight for both," said one of Sunita's relatives. "Their parents agreed to the match and fixed the wedding date," the relative said.

When Rajib heard of the wedding, he tried to dissuade Sunita and her parents several times, police sources said. "Last May, Rajib went to Sunita's home and threatened the family if she married Souvik. Later, he started stalking Sunita and harassing her whenever she stepped out of home. Sunita's father, Prangopal Sarkar, lodged a police complaint against Rajib, but withdrew it later after he promised not to disturb her further," said Pradyut Majumdar, Sunita's maternal uncle.

On Saturday, no one who knew Rajib spotted him among the guests. "It was around 10.40pm. The sindur-daan had just ended and the bride and groom were still sitting at the chhatnatala when Rajib stepped forward and fired at Souvik," said Animesh Chakraborty, a neighbour of the bride. Rajib was beaten for almost half an hour before a police team rescued him, said a witness.

The police said the murder was the fallout of a triangular love affair. "We have found out after preliminary investigation that Rajib had an affair with the girl and it was this that drove him to murder the groom. We are investigating the matter and have sent the bodies for autopsy," said Sanjay Singh, the commissioner of Barrackpore police.

Souvik's father Basudeb Dey, however, has lodged an FIR at Bijpur police station against Sunita and her parents for allegedly concealing the fact that she had an affair with another man. "We did not know that Sunita had an affair and she and her family concealed the matter. Because of this my brother has been killed. The family should be punished," said Souvik's sister Jayati Mitra.

Shaitaan - A Criminal Mind: Young Girl cheated several boys by marrying them and went away with money (Episode 42 on 2nd June 2013)

The Inside Story
One girl told other young men that she was a lawyer and convinced them she was the perfect mate for them. At least seven men from the city and elsewhere in the state were smitten and ‘married’ her before realizing a few others had similarly fallen for her. By then, it was too late.

After a football player from Pulianthope and a car showroom employee from Mugalivakkam, who together lost Rs 3 lakh to her, lodged complaints, police are looking for the woman who gave her name as Shahnaz and claimed she was from Thiruvananthapuram. She gave all her victims visiting cards that showed her to be a law graduate.

In his complaint to police Commissioner J K Tripathy on Wednesday, Manikandan said he met her at the automobile showroom where he worked. Shahnaz showed him a photograph of a man who she claimed had cheated her friend promising marriage. She took Manikandan’s number and later proposed to him.

The two got married on May 21, 2011 at a temple in Kunrathur and a grand reception was held at Porur. Later, she told Manikandan she was practising at the Madras high court and also wanted to enter the IAS. “She said she wanted to concentrate on her studies and asked me to put her in a hostel at Saidapet. I borrowed Rs 1.8 lakh to help her in July,” Manikandan said. He continued to visit the hostel.

On November 8, Manikandan received a phone call saying the woman was missing from the hostel for more than a week. Later, he received a call from a man named Venkatesan who said she had cheated his brother of a huge sum in similar fashion. Subsequent inquiries revealed that she had cheated others, too, but Manikandan didn’t approach police as he was ashamed to admit he had been conned.

He other complainant, football player Prasanna said he had been in love with Shahanaz for some years but they got married five months ago after she threatened to commit suicide. In his complaint, Prasanna said he met her at a supermarket in Vepery. A while after the wedding at the Uthukadu Ellaiamman temple in Kancheepuram, Prasanna became suspicious when the supermarket owner showed him photographs of Shahnaz with other men. “I confronted her, but she said the owner was a pervert who always harassed her,” Prasanna said.

“When a few others told me she had married another person from the same area, I decided to lodge a complaint,” he said. Preliminary investigation revealed that the woman had cheated seven men from various places in the state.

We have heard about several stories that young men cheated several girls and married them and went away with jewels and money. But this is different where a Girl cheated several boys and looted their money. Hence in future young boys must take much more care in selecting brides for their wedding.

The Inside Story
New delhi, Sep 24, 2012:

Police question girlfriend, her family

A day after the murder of an engineering student at Punjabi Bagh in west Delhi, police found a love angle in the crime and are questioning the victim’s girlfriend and her family members.

Dharmender, who hailed from Sikar in Rajasthan and was pursuing BTech from an engineering college in Jamshedpur, was found beaten to death around 7.30 am on Sunday at Swayam Siddha colony in west Delhi’s Punjabi Bagh.

Discovering his body in a pool of blood, a passerby informed police.

Police found that Dharmender was lying dead with several fractures on his body and deep injury marks on his chin and right hand.

Finding his mobile phone and wallet still with him, police ruled out the robbery angle in Dharmender’s death.

During investigation, police found that Dharmender fell in love with a girl from Madipur after he came to Delhi in 2010, telling his parents that he was going to the Capital to prepare for FIITJEE.

Fled home

In July last year, both of them fled from their homes. The girl’s family did not lodge a complaint as she returned after a few days, police said.

But Dharmender, who lived in rented accommodation near the girl’s house, never returned.

He went to his home town and then told his parents that he had got selected in an engineering college at Jamshedpur. He was found dead near thegirl’s house on Sunday.

“We are questioning the girl’s parents and trying to ascertain the cause behind the murder. We are also trying to ascertain when he came to Delhi again,” said a senior police officer.

Police have collected Dharmender’s cellphone call details. Meanwhile, his body has

been handed over to his familyon Monday after a post-mortem.

Hit on head

In the preliminary autopsy report, it has been found that Dharmeder died after being beaten on the head with a heavy object.
