Crime Patrol: Baby girl lies unwanted as two families battle over a new-born boy; court steps in (Episode 152, 153 on 8th-9th Sep 2012)

The eight-day-old baby lies in the nursery for new-borns. Her biological mother, who is in the women's general ward does not see her, or feed her. She remains un-named. She was born a healthy baby. Her shortcoming is that she is not a boy.
When Poonam Kanwar delivered her child at Jodhpur's Umaid Hospital, mid-wives reportedly eager for a tip said, she had given birth to a son. They brought her a baby boy to hold in her arms, and collected their reward. Then the news was broken two hours later to Poonam and her family that the boy they had embraced was actually born to another woman in the same hospital. Now, Poonam says she wants a DNA test to confirm who the baby boy belongs to. That could take four weeks, say authorities. On the basis of a blood test, hospital authorities claim Poonam is the baby girl's mother.
Poonam already has a son. Like Reshma Devi, the boy's biological mother, she comes from a rather modest family of farmers in Barmer district. Reshma Devi has already left the hospital with her son and is taking full care of him.
"It's the fault of the hospital staff which has caused all this confusion," says Poonam Devi's husband, Chain Singh.
Doctors say that they cannot allow the abandoned girl to be fed by Poonam Devi till she accepts this is her child - the family says they will not allow this till they get the results of the DNA test.
The court has sought a progress report from the CJM on April 20 and has appointed advocate Raj Lakshmi Choudhary as the girl's amicus curie.
Given the insensitivity and negligence of hospital staff, the Rajasthan Women's Commission has intervened. "This case smacks of a feudal mindset that discriminates against the girl child. Also it's the negligence of the hospital staff that has created this confusion and caused so much suffering to this little girl. Our Commission is entitled to issue notices in such cases to seek action against the guilty and we shall definitely do the same''," said Dr Lad Kumari Jain, Chairperson, Rajasthan Women's Commission.

16th July 2012 - Madhumita Shukla murder case: High Court upholds life term of former MLA Amarmani Tripathi & Madhumani

Nainital: The Uttarakhand High Court today upheld the life imprisonment awarded to former Samajwadi Party MLA Amarmani Tripathi, his wife and two others for the murder of poetess Madhumita Shukla.
A division bench of the High Court comprising Chief Justice Barin Ghosh and Justice UC Dhayani also awarded life imprisonment to Prakash Pandey, who was earlier let off by the Dehradun CBI court for want of evidence.
Rejecting the petition of the four convicts, the court said that no relief can be granted to Amarmani or any other convict since their role in Madhumita Shukla's murder has been proved by the CBI, said Virednra Singh Adhikari, counsel for Nidhi Shukla, said the murdered poetess' sister.
The court also directed the trial court to take Pandey into custody immediately.
Amarmani Tripathi, his wife Madhumani and two others Rohit Chaturvedi and Santosh Kumar Rai were convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment by the Dehradun court in 2007 for hatching a conspiracy and killing Ms Shukla in Lucknow in 2003.
The investigations revealed that the poetess was pregnant when she was murdered and both Pandey and Rai went to her house and shot her dead.
Today's ruling is a setback for Tripathi, who has made several attempts in the past to get bail to be able to contest state Assembly and Lok Sabha elections.

Cops arrested 24-year-old for threatening her brother's 17-year-old friend-- who owed her Rs 1,000 -- with a rape frame-up if he didn't pay up
The Borivli police arrested a 24-year-old woman on Wednesday for allegedly abetting an SSC student to commit suicide. Cops said the woman blackmailed the boy by threatening to slap a rape case on him if did not return an amount of Rs 1,000 which he had borrowed from her brother 15 days ago.
According to investigators, the accused identified as Jyoti Pillai works for a private firm in Malad. Couple of weeks back, her younger brother Ganesh had taken Rs 1,000 from her salary money kept at their Gorai residence to lend it to his friend Ritesh Singh (17), who said he needed the money to buy medicines for his ailing grandmother.

On Monday, when Jyoti opened her cupboard to take some cash, she found Rs 1,000 missing. When she asked Ganesh, he told her that Ritesh had borrowed it and would return it in a few days. An irritated Jyoti landed at Ritesh's house on Tuesday to demand her dues. At the time, Ritesh's parents were not at home.
"Only Ritesh and his grandmother were in the house when Jyoti went there and started abusing Ritesh. So he and his grandmother gave whatever cash they had on them at that time, which was around Rs 280," said Senior Police Inspector Bhagwan Chate.
But Jyoti wanted the entire amount and she threatened Ritesh that she would tell his parents and even slap rape charges on him. "Jyoti told Ritesh she would approach the police and register a rape case against him," added Chate.
Daunted by her threats, a susceptible Ritesh hanged himself at his residence soon after Jyoti left. The police have not found any suicide note near the body but Ritesh's friends told the police about Jyoti's visit and threats. "We have arrested Jyoti on the charges of abetment to suicide. We are further investigating the case," said Chate.
