Inside Story

Cops claim Kwatra murder case cracked; employee, 3 others held

Four persons, including a 21-year-old woman and her minor brother, were arrested on Wednesday for the murder of 65-year-old Navraj Kwatra, the son of Punjabi writer Amrita Pritam.

One of the accused, Savita Gupta, had been working for Kwatra for the past three months. The others

include her boyfriend Vinay Bose, 24, Gaurank Khawle, 21, and a 17-year-old boy.

Kwatra was found murdered at his residence-cum-photo studio at Wilderness society, Borivli (West), on September 14.

According to the MHB Colony police, it took six teams, interrogation of over 100 people, and grilling of several eyewitnesses to crack the case.

“We prepared the sketches of the two accused. We also interrogated the people whose numbers were found in Kwatra’s cellphone and some whose pictures were found in his studio,” said Sunil Paraskar, regional additional commissioner of police.

The police claim that during questioning Gupta revealed the involvement of Bose and Khawle, who then admitted to the crime.

Gupta had borrowed money from Kwatra and had advised Bose and Khawle to approach the senior citizen when they were in need of cash. The duo allegedly conducted a recce of Kwatra’s studio on September 13, but could not execute their plans as the flat was locked.

The next day, they approached him posing as courier boys. Gupta’s brother was outside the building to inform them of anyone’s arrival. “It appears that the motive behind the murder was robbery, and it was not a pre-planned attack,” said Paraskar.

“Khawle said he needed the money to repair his damaged motorbike, while Bose said he too was in desperate need of cash. The accused said they panicked when Kwatra started to scream and smothered him to death. They fled with Rs55,000 and a camera, which have been recovered,” he added.

A source in the MHB Colony police said Kwatra had recently purchased two flats in Andheri and was soon to buy another one in Santacruz. “Also, he and his wife sold one of their three bungalows last year for Rs15 crore,” the source said. “It is possible he might have given Gupta an idea of his wealth.”

According to the police, none of the accused have previous criminal records. While Gupta’s sibling was sent to the Dongri Children’s Home, the other three were remanded in police custody till September 25 on Thursday.

The Gupta siblings’ parents told the police that they were not aware of their children’s activities and were saddened that the incident had ruined their lives.

Navraj Kwatra murder case: Police recovers pornographic CDs

Navraj Kwatra, the 65-year-old son of the eminent write Amrita Pritam, was found dead in suspicious circumstances. Police recovered pornographic CDs – featuring struggling Bollywood starlets – from his flat. Kwatra, a photographer, stayed alone at his ground floor flat in LIC Colony in Borivali.

He was strangled to death by two unidentified assailants last Friday. Police investigations also revealed that CCTVs were installed in the flat’s bedroom and bathroom. Condoms (mostly female), Viagra pills and sex toys were also recovered from his apartment. The police are questioning the small time models and struggling Bollywood female actors who featured in the pictures and videos.

Reportedly, some of them have told the police that the Kwatra used to pay them for featuring in video albums and small roles. Police are further investigating the murder.

Kwatra murder: Cops probing ‘sex angle’

Investigations into the murder of Navraj Kwatra, son of late writer Amrita Pritam, has thrown up some shocking revelations.

Some of the persons, who had been visiting the photo studio where Kwatra was killed, told police that instead of taking money from the aspiring models to get their photographs clicked, Kwatra used to give them money.

Other angles, which the police are investigating, are the possibility of some boyfriend of the girl who used to visit the studio could be behind the killing.

According to the police, while Kwatra was staying alone in his flat at Andheri , he was using his LIC Colony flat in Borivli as a photo studio. He also has few flats in Kandivli and Santa Cruz.

“Instead of taking money, Kwatra was paying models. Seizure of sex toys, sexual enhancement pills and female condoms from his studio has made this case complicated,” said a police inspector, who is investigating the case.

“We suspect the murderer could be a boyfriend of some aspiring female model or her relative who would have assumed that after killing Kwatra, he would also get some valuables or money. Another possibility that the murderer may be wanted to acquire his property.”

“We are questioning people on the basis of photographs of female and male models found in Kwatra’s residence. We have formed several teams and they are investigating the case from all possible angles. The mobile phone record has also been checked and calls made and received on his phone are also being verified,” said deputy commissioner of police Mahesh Patil.

The police have issued the sketches of the two suspects based on the description provided by two of his neighbours and the engineer who had gone to update Kwatra’s computer before the incident.

Crime Patrol: Man steals from employer, killed by friends for booty (Episode 170 on 26th Oct 2012)

Inside Story
Aug 8, 2012

MUMBAI: A 24-year-old manager of a jewellery manufacturing unit was murdered by five of his friends after he told them that he had stolen gold ornaments worth Rs 20 lakh. The victim's friends as well as two jewellers who had purchased the stolen gold from them have been arrested.

The victim, Prashant Rahatwal, worked at a gold manufacturing workshop in Rose Villa, Dahisar (W). He was responsible for assigning work to craftsmen and had a set of keys to the workshop. On July 30, Mayur Khandeshwar (32), who owns the workshop with his partner Manoj, lodged a complaint with the MHB police about 700 gms of gold ornaments being stolen. Rahatwal was the suspect as he had stopped coming to work.

"The theft took place on July 28. We went through Rahatwal's call records and found that his Alibaug-based friend, Surendra Patil, had called him the most," said investigating officer Santosh Dalvi of the MHB police.

The cops quizzed Rahatwal's fiancee, Kavita, and learnt that Surendra had offered to make Rahatwal a partner in a bar he was planning to purchase and had asked him to arrange for Rs 8 lakh in cash or gold. Surendra planned to show these as a guarantee for taking a loan to purchase the bar.

When Rahatwal agreed, Surendra called him to Alibaug on July 29. But Surendra had hatched a plot to bump off Rahatwal and steal his gold. He roped in four of their friends-Yashwant Patil (38), Jitendra Damugade (31), Manohar Patil (38) and Raju Malak (24)-to carry out the crime. First, they took Rahatwal out for drinks. On the pretext of showing him the bar to be purchased, the accused took Rahatwal into a forest, where they had already dug up a pit. They beat up Rahatwal with iron rods, strangled him with a wire and buried his body in the pit.

"When we interrogated Surendra, he claimed he was in Thane on the day of the incident. His cellphone was switched off between 11am and 6pm that day.

We nailed his lie through the location of his phone. Eventually, Surendra admitted to the murder and led us to the spot in the forest where they had dumped Rahatwal's body on August 4," an officer said. Surendra nd the other four accused were arrested by the Revdanda police in whose jurisdiction the murder had taken place.

Surendra led the cops to two Alibaug-based jewelers-Ashok Jain and Dilip Jain-who had purchased the gold from him despite knowing that it was stolen. "The Jains gave Surendra an initial sum of Rs 25,000 for the gold and were to pay the remaining amount later. Meanwhile, the Jains came to Mumbai and sold the gold at Zaveri Bazaar for Rs 12.5 lakh. We are trying to recover the stolen gold," the official said.

All the accused have been remanded in police custody till August 11.

Dehradun Sperm donar killed by a doctor (Episode 168, 169 on 19-20 Oct2012)

PART 1

PART 2

Inside Story

The sensational Vaibhav Saini (shown as Sunil Kohli) murder case has virtually turned upside down with the arrest of the accused doctor Avinash Gehlot (shown as Dr. Sudhir Tiwari).

The deceased Vaibhav Saini, who was being perceived as a victim so far, turned out to be blackmailer. The police arrested Dr Gehlot on Friday.

In his statement given to the police, Dr Gehlot said that Saini had had illicit relations with his wife and would blackmail him to extort money. Gehlot had also paid him about `1 lakh so far. “The doctor has accepted that he killed Vaibhav Saini. He told us that Saini had had illicit relations with his wife and now he had been blackmailing him by threatening to make public some pictures of his wife in compromising position,” said SSP Neeru Garg.

It may be recalled that Vaibhav Saini’s dead body was found lying on the roadside in suspicious circumstances on July 6 this year near Nanoor Kheda village under police station Raipur. He had a cannula inserted in his arm and on it was placed an empty syringe. Initially, it was seen as a suicide, but the ensuing police investigation revealed that it was murder. The police stumbled upon two mobile phone numbers, one of which had been used exclusively to call Saini. The police came to know through Saini’s girlfriend that he used to donate sperm for money. The existence of a suspicious doctor also came in the picture. The phone numbers were purchased on fake identity.

During the investigation, it came to light that Dr Avinash Gehlot used to live in Vaibhav Saini’s house on rent and he lived there for about two years. Then about one-and-a-half years back, he had an argument with Saini and vacated the house.

It emerged that Gehlot’s wife Shailaja (shown as Natasha) was very frank with Vaibhav and this caused rancour between him and Gehlot. Gehlot told the police that Saini had been blackmailing him since October last year and had extorted about `1 lakh from him in installments.

Fed up with this, Gehlot made a plan to kill Saini and took him in confidence by posing as a different person. He would supply him girls and would pay him for sperm donation. On July 5, Gehlot called Saini to Sahasdhara Crossing on the pretext of introducing him with a new girl. When he came, Gehlot met him in the make up of a Sikh and injected an overdose of diazepam into body which resulted in lowering Saini’s blood pressure. Then the doctor injected Nuvan into his body and threw him out of his car at Nanoor Kheda.

The police are also taking action against the nodal officer of Uninor, from which SIM cards were purchased on fake ID.

Crime Patrol: Tailor's tag helps rural police solve murder case (Episode 166, 167 on 13-14 Oct 2012)

PART 1

PART 2

Inside Story
PUNE: This sounds like a plot straight out of a pulp crime novel. The Pune rural police ascertained the identity of a murder victim and arrested the killers following a clue found on the dead man's shirt, which contained the address of the tailor who had made it. The police have arrested two suspects in this regard.

The Saswad police had registered a complaint of murder and destruction of evidence against unidentified persons after the body of a man was discovered by police patil Tukaram Bathe of Devdi village in Purandhar taluka on Saswad-Kapurhol Road on May 22. The victim's shirt had the tailor's address, Mahesh, Kothrud, Pune 38, written on it. Acting on the clue, the police located the tailor, who identified the photograph of the dead man as P G Gawde (as Ramrao Khadre). However, the tailor failed to provide any more details.

Later, responding to an appeal by the police in the local media, the victim's family met inspector Ashok Wandhekar of the Saswad police and identified the deceased as Pundalik Ganpat Gawde (55), a resident of Velhe in Purandhar taluka. Gawde's family members told the police that Gawde was running a business of car rentals. He owned an Indica (MH12/CD/5797) and used to travel out of Pune for days together. After the incident, the car and his mobile handset were found stolen.

Investigations revealed that Gawde's handset was being used by Nitesh Pardeshi. When Pardeshi was summoned for questioning, he said the handset, which contained a sim card in his name, was used by his friend Vijay Ganesh Gangadhare. Gangadhare had purchased the card in Pardeshi's name as he did not have a photograph. Later, during interrogation, Gangadhare confessed to his involvement in Gawde's murder, along with his friend, Uma Shankar Malika Arjun Kanagi (as Nagesh Bhosle and played by Navin Prabhakar) of Solapur.

Gangadhare and Kanagi stayed together at Bhavani Peth. Kanagi became friends with Gawde, since he used to rent the victim's car to travel to Mumbai to meet a woman with whom he had an affair. The probe has revealed that sometime back, Gawde had brought Kanagi to his home to give him first aid, as he had met with an accident. Gawde had later dropped Kanagi to his residence at Solapur and handed him a bag that contained a photograph of the Mumbai-based woman. Kanagi's wife saw the picture in the bag and their relations soured as she discovered her husband's alleged affair . She initially decided to divorce Kanagi, but settled the dispute after a few months.

Later, Kanagi returned to Pune and entered into a criminal conspiracy with Gangadhare and his cousin Mayur Totelu to kill Gawde, because of whom his marital life had become miserable. To execute the plan, the threesome rented Gawde's vehicle and took him to Wakad and then to Katraj, where Kanagi assaulted him with a sharp weapon. Thinking he was dead, the suspects dumped Gawde on Saswad-Kapurhol Road. The suspects returned to the scene to collect Gawde's driving licence, so that the body would remain unidentified. However, they found Gawde alive and shouting for help. The suspects then bludgeoned him to death and fled with his licence.

A police team comprising sub-inspector V S Bhosale, assistant sub-inspector P K Bhosale and policemen Ganesh Dabhade, Nandkumar Kekan, Rajendra Nirge and Sandeep Gorhe, under superintendent of police Sandeep Karnik and deputy superintendent of police (home) Shankar Jadhav arrested Kanagi and Gangadhare from their hideouts on June 11 and 12.

The police team recovered the car which was abandoned behind a mall at Fatimanagar, while the handset and a sharp weapon were found from the suspects. The police are on the lookout for the third suspect, Totelu.

Crime Patrol: 2 kill sister-in-law for dead brother's railway job (Episode 165 on 12 Oct 2012)

Inside Story
Their brother had died a day earlier, but this didn't stop two men from allegedly killing their sister-in-law at their Kurla residence. The reason: they wanted a job in the railways.

Manjesh Kumar Dohari, 27, a resident of Nehru Nagar, building no 106, died at the Kalyan railway

hospital on Sunday night. He worked as a helper at Matunga railway station and had met with a bike accident last year, which left him paralysed from the waist, the police said.

According to the police, Manjesh's wife Purnima, 24, was the immediate next of kin and hence was eligible for his job as well as money from the railways.

However, Manjesh's younger siblings, Pradeep Kumar Dohari, 24, and his 16-year-old brother (name withheld), were also keen to get the job. "They were surprised when they found out that Purnima would get the job as she had to take care of her two-year-old son Bhavesh," said Balasaheb Jagdale, inspector, Nehru Nagar police station.

Purnima's brother Khushwant Singh told HT, "On Sunday night, Pradeep Kumar and his younger brother told Purnima that she should give them Bhavesh's custody and that they would look after her. My sister realised their real motive and refused."

According to Khushwant, the brothers continued to bicker with Purnima even the next day and left the house in the afternoon after a fight. "They returned in the evening and did not speak to anyone. In the night, my sister went to sleep in the bedroom, while my brother Manish, the Dohari brothers, and I slept in the hall," he said, adding that they were to leave in the morning for Ittawa in Madhya Pradesh to perform Manjesh's last rites.

"Around 2.30am, Pradeep Kumar woke me up saying that Purnima was dead. I rushed to the bedroom and tried to wake her up, but she didn't respond. I knew that something was wrong and immediately called the Nehru Nagar police," said Khushwant.

S Netke, sub-inspector, Nehru Nagar police station, said that Purnima's brothers suspected that her brothers-in-law were responsible for her death. "During interrogation, the Doharis confessed. They said they had strangled Purnima as they wanted to get the job in the railways."

Following this the Nehru Nagar police arrested the two brothers on murder charge.

Crime Patrol: Kaap maha panchayat against Kishan and Keval (Episode 164 on 6th, 7th Oct 2012)

What is Khap Panchayat?

The Inside Story

CHENNAI: A 30-year-old software engineer landed behind bars on Wednesday for helping a friend swindle 49 lakh from customers of a private bank in the city. Working for TCS eServe, which handled the back-end operations of Citibank, she had access to sensitive information of account holders, police said.

Accused Pratiksha used her access to the account details to change the addresses of two customers. This misguided the bank to send credit and debit cards to the new addresses, where proxies received them. They used the cards to purchase goods and withdraw money. The bank found some discrepancies and informed the software company, which later found that the data had been accessed from Pratiksha's computer.

Based on the complaint of a senior TCS official, bank fraud wing sleuths of the Central Crime Branch nabbed the woman from her house in Ashok Nagar.

During interrogation she confessed to having committed the offence.

Police are now on the lookout for Pratiksha's accomplices.

Investigating officers said Pratiksha had been working in the company for seven years after completing her master's in computer application.

According to the police, she was coerced into the crime by a friend who was in dire need of money.

Pratiksha got married a few months ago, and her husband is also a software professional.

She identified some bank accounts lying inactive for more than a year and changed the addresses of the account holders. She then sent requests for credit and debit cards to the bank, as if the customers were doing it.

Pratiyusha's friend collected the documents sent by the bank after waiting near the fake addresses they had entered in the bank accounts. "Her friend is absconding. The friend used the cards and made online transfer to make Rs 49 lakh," a police officer said. The bank officials felt suspicious at one point and verified with the customer who said he had not made any requests or transactions for a while. Later, they came to know someone had manipulated the bank accounts at the back end.

A TCS eServe spokesman said the employee has been suspended. "Preliminary investigations have shown that an employee of TCS eServe, in the process of providing services to one of our clients, undertook some fraudulent transactions pertaining to two customer accounts of the client. As per policy, we have reported the incident to the police, suspended the employee and are working with authorities to complete the investigations, after which further action will be taken. The incident is an isolated one and on the instructions of our client, balances have been restored," he said.
