Manjesh Kumar Dohari, 27, a resident of Nehru Nagar, building no 106, died at the Kalyan railway
hospital on Sunday night. He worked as a helper at Matunga railway station and had met with a bike accident last year, which left him paralysed from the waist, the police said.
According to the police, Manjesh's wife Purnima, 24, was the immediate next of kin and hence was eligible for his job as well as money from the railways.
However, Manjesh's younger siblings, Pradeep Kumar Dohari, 24, and his 16-year-old brother (name withheld), were also keen to get the job. "They were surprised when they found out that Purnima would get the job as she had to take care of her two-year-old son Bhavesh," said Balasaheb Jagdale, inspector, Nehru Nagar police station.
Purnima's brother Khushwant Singh told HT, "On Sunday night, Pradeep Kumar and his younger brother told Purnima that she should give them Bhavesh's custody and that they would look after her. My sister realised their real motive and refused."
According to Khushwant, the brothers continued to bicker with Purnima even the next day and left the house in the afternoon after a fight. "They returned in the evening and did not speak to anyone. In the night, my sister went to sleep in the bedroom, while my brother Manish, the Dohari brothers, and I slept in the hall," he said, adding that they were to leave in the morning for Ittawa in Madhya Pradesh to perform Manjesh's last rites.
"Around 2.30am, Pradeep Kumar woke me up saying that Purnima was dead. I rushed to the bedroom and tried to wake her up, but she didn't respond. I knew that something was wrong and immediately called the Nehru Nagar police," said Khushwant.
S Netke, sub-inspector, Nehru Nagar police station, said that Purnima's brothers suspected that her brothers-in-law were responsible for her death. "During interrogation, the Doharis confessed. They said they had strangled Purnima as they wanted to get the job in the railways."
Following this the Nehru Nagar police arrested the two brothers on murder charge.
