Allahabad (Nov 30, 2012): A court in Allahabad is going to pronounce
its order on a man convicted of killing his victims and indulging in
cannibalism. The convict Raja Kalander alias Ram Niranjan (50) has been found
guilty of killing a journalist Dhirendra Singh and several others. The case
against Raja Kalander went on for more than 12 years. Dhirendra Singh was
killed and his body was cut into several pieces and thrown into a river and a
jungle.

The court while convicting Kalandar had declared the murder of Dhirendra Singh
as the rarest of rare case. The investigations against Kalandar started in
2000 when Dhirenda Singh was killed and his family filed a case. During the
course of investigating the murder of the journalist, the police searched the
house of district panchayat member Phoolan Devi where several articles
belonging to Singh were recovered. Kalandar, who is Phoolan's husband,
admitted to the murder and during the investigation several human skulls were
also found. The police also recovered Singh's vehicle.

Kalandar had identified Singh's body. He also revealed that he had buried 14
human skulls in his house. In fact, Kalandar disclosed that he had called
Singh at a farmhouse in Pipri where he was shot dead by Kalandar's
brother-in-law Vakchharaj. After killing Singh, Kalandar and Vakchharaj loaded
his body into a Tata Sumo went to Madhya Pradesh. They dismembered his body
and dug it into the fields. Singh's head was thrown into the Bansagar pond in
Rewa.

The prosecution described him as a serial killer in the court as he was
involved in the murder of 14 people. He reportedly killed his victims and then
used to keep their skulls. His motive for carrying out the killings was to
take revenge from his enemies and to increase his mental power.

He had also told the police that he killed Singh because he was apprehensive
that the latter would publish his story. His brother-in-law had actively
helped him in his activities, according to the police. The prosecution had
also told the court that Kalandar used to eat certain body parts of his
victims. He used to bail the brains of his victims and then drank it. He also
used to throw body parts before pigs at the farmhouse and hung the skulls on a
tree.

He used to segregate his victims's skulls on the basis of their castes and
used to pronounce judgement on them. The police had also recovered a diary
belonging to Kalandar, which he used to call the court diary. The diary had
details about his victims and also about those he wanted to kill. According to
police records Kalandar was a history-sheeter and before tuning into a killer
he used rob people. He committed his first murder in 1998 which continued till
2000 when he killed Singh.

Court stops telecast of Sony’s ‘Crime Patrol’ Chautala episode

Court stops telecast of Sony’s ‘Crime Patrol’ Chautala episodeNew Delhi : The Delhi High Court Friday restrained Sony TV channel from broadcasting an episode of “Crime Patrol” programme based on a teachers’ recruitment scam involving former Haryana chief minister Om Prakash Chautala and 54 others.

Justice M.L. Mehta, in an interim direction, asked the entertainment channel not to telecast the episode, scheduled to be aired Saturday.

The court’s order came on a plea of Chautala, his then officer on special duty Vidya Dhar and political advisor Sher Singh Badshami.

Advocate Rajiv Nayyar, appearing for Chautala, asked the court to direct the channel to postpone the telecast till the pending petition seeking suspension of their sentence is decided by another bench, as the programme could adversely impact the appeal against the trial court verdict.

He said that Chautala has also sought suspension of his 10 year imprisonment and till it is decided, the programme’s telecast should be deferred.

The trial court last month sentenced Chautala, his son Ajay Chautala and eight others to 10 years in jail while one convict was sentenced to five years and 45 others were handed out four-year jail terms after convicting them of illegally recruiting 3,206 junior basic trained teachers in Haryana in 2000.

Crime Patrol: ‘Almost 17% of working women face sexual harassment’ (Episode 214 on 22nd Feb 2013)

Almost 17% of working women face sexual harassment

A recent survey has revealed that almost 17 per cent of working women in India are said to face sexual harassment at workplace, with incidence rates being high in both organised and unorganised sectors.

The opinion poll ‘Sexual Harassment at Workplaces in India 2011-2012’ was jointly conducted by Oxfam India and Social and Rural Research Institute, a wing of IMRB International, in cities including Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai, Kolkata, Ahmadabad, Lucknow and Durgapur.

According to the report, most of these incidents of sexual harassment were non-physical. A total of 66 of the 400 respondents reported to have faced a cumulative of 121 incidents of sexual harassment. Out of the 121 incidents, 102 were reported to be non-physical, whereas the remaining 19 incidents were physical in nature. “While 87 percent of the general population and 93 percent of working women respondents reported awareness of sexual harassment at work place, majority of the victims did not resort to any formal action against the perpetrators. The top three industries that have emerged unsafe for women are labourers (29 percent), domestic helps (23 percent) and small scale manufacturing (16 percent),” the report revealed.

“It is shocking that 17 percent of working women face sexual harassment in workplaces as per the study. Each one of us has to take a stand and say no to violence against women’”, said Nisha Agrawal, CEO of Oxfam India. The report further said that a majority of women (both general population and working women) especially those belonging to the unorganised sector are more susceptible to sexual harassment due to lack of awareness of legislation. Interestingly, 26 percent reported to be the sole earning member of their families, indicating that economic vulnerability further makes women vulnerable to harassment at the workplace. Some of the reasons mentioned for not taking any action were ‘fear of losing the job’, ‘absence of any complaint mechanism at the workplace’, ‘fear of getting stigmatized’ and ‘unawareness of redressal mechanism’. The survey pointed that the Supreme Court (SC) guidelines on sexual harassment were known only to 17 percent of the women.

RAIDS CONDUCTED IN PUNJAB

Raids were conducted by the Panchkula police in Punjab to recover Chaudhary’s mobile phones and nab his accomplices, Gurmeet, Dharampal and Paramjeet, on Saturday evening.

MLA RK Chaudhary comes out of the General Hospital in Panchkula, after a medical examination. A file photo
Panchkula, January 12

In another major development in the Jyoti murder case, the police today claimed to have recovered one of the two mobile phones of the deceased from Doon MLA Ram Kumar Chaudhary. Both the mobile phones had been missing since the day Jyoti was murdered.

However, the police is tight-lipped about the place from where the victim’s mobile phone has been recovered. Sources said the cellphone had been recovered from Baddi.

The police had questioned the MLA about Jyoti’s mobile phones. Regarding his own cellphones, the MLA had told the police that he lost them on the day of election results when thousands of supporters thronged his residence at Sandholi, Baddi.

“One of the mobile phones of Jyoti has been recovered and the other still needs to be found,” a source said.

“The MLA informed us that on the day of election results, there was a huge rush at his residence with thousands of supporters thronging the house to greet him. He said not only his mobile phone but also his wife’s cellphone got misplaced in that rush,” said an officer of the Panchkula police.

The police today searched for Chaudhary’s mobile phones in Punjab where a high-profile leader had reportedly given him shelter.

The Panchkula police had recovered the car, which was reportedly used in the crime, from Chaudhary’s house on Thursday. However, the police is yet to find who actually used the car. The police had looked for major clues at a hotel in Baddi where Jyoti used to meet the accused quite often.

Chaudhary surrendered before a Panchkula court on Tuesday, the day he had to take the oath at a ceremony in the Assembly House in Dharamsala, Himachal Pradesh. The Panchkula police had got the arrest warrants of four accused in the Jyoti murder case namely Ram Kumar Chaudhary, Gurmeet, Dharampal and Paramjeet. The other three have absconded.

Jyoti (24) was found murdered on November 22 in Panchkula. The deceased, who hailed from Hoshiarpur, was reportedly in touch with the MLA and the other accused. The post-mortem of the body has revealed that the girl recently underwent an abortion.

Congress MLA Ram Kumar Chaudhary involved in a Woman murder

Yet another case of shame and injustice towards Woman in India, this time a newly elected MLA Congress leader Ram Kumar Chaudhary from the Doon constituency in Himachal Pradesh is charged for murdering 24 year old Jyoti Rani. According to Jyoti’s father Buti Ram she was handling Chaudhary’s financial matters during Assembly elections.

Jyoti was found murdered at Sector 21 in Panchkula on November 21, 2011. Investigations have revealed that Ram Kumar Chaudhary was in regular touch with her and was calling her from SIM cards procured on fake addresses and identities. The SIM card dealer Asheeh Kumar confirmed that he issued the cards on fake addresses to Chaudhary, dealer has been living in Baddi, the same area to which the MLA belongs. Police said that the location of Chaudhary’s original number on the day of the murder had been tracked closer to the site where the girl was found murdered. All the numbers used by Chaudhary and the other accused and that of the girl had been switched off. After being booked in a murder the newly-elected legislator Ram Kumar Chaudhary has gone underground.

It’s really sad to see people responsible for protecting people are themselves committing such horrendous crime. The congress party should have come out in public and kicked out the tainted legislator from party and should have completely disassociated him, but why will they do such a bold act? Was it not known to the congress party that Chaudhary has murder case against him and he should not be allowed to contest using party’s ticket? It’s not yet proven that Chaudhary is the culprit and surely it will take another ten years to prove him guilty or most probably after few years he will be left for not enough evidences, by that time the case would be forgotten and Chaudhary would have become even more powerful with his arms deep rooted enough in the dirty political soil that nobody would dare point figures at him.

Shaitaan - A Criminal Mind: Punjaban fancied criminals, loved good life (Episode on 26th Jan 2013)

Punjaban fancied criminals, loved good life

NEW DELHI: She is only 26, but Geeta Arora alias Sonu Punjaban, is already a well-known face for the Delhi Police. The alleged kingpin of one of the biggest sex rackets in NCR, Punjaban's clients included high-profile businessmen, while her employees comprised of "aspiring models and actresses".

Punjaban, who's association with crime began over 12 years ago, has had a colourful albeit 'unlucky' life. In fact, most people who've given her shelter have ended up dead, including two husbands.

"She was fascinated by criminals and was associated with them for the last 12 years. Her first husband from the underworld was Vijay Singh, an extortionist from Uttar Pradesh who belonged to the Sriprakash Shukla gang. He was killed by the Special Task Force of UP police in an encounter," said a senior police officer.

That was the beginning. Geeta soon got close to Najafgarh's Deepak who brought her to the Capital. However, Deepak too was gunned down by the police in Assam in 2003. Unperturbed, she married Hemant, elder brother of Deepak. "By then, Hemant was already under the police scanner for a double murder in the city. Hemant also got her a posh residence in south Delhi, which he had allegedly acquired by force. Hemant, along with two other gangsters, was killed in a shootout in Gurgaon in 2006,'' said a police source.

A desperate Geeta then sought refuge with Ashok Bunty from the original gang. He too was gunned down within a month in Dilshad Garden.

Punjaban, say Special Staff officials, continued running the racket. "It was her unique modus operandi which made it difficult to nab her. Not only did she stay away from girls to avoid detection, she employed a number of pimps for logistics. She kept a check on them while travelling in her car, but didn't appear before her clients before checking their credentials. She relied on old clients to strike new deals,'' said H G S Dhaliwal, DCP (south).

According to sources, some of the girls employed by her were school dropouts. "She changed their look and style of interacting with clients. The girls were paid Rs 60,000 per month on contract. She would charge Rs 5,000 to Rs 15,000 for each night," a senior police officer told Times City.

Her henchmen escorted the girls to Kolkata, Mumbai, Rajasthan and Punjab. She also picked up "educated'' wannabe models from other areas.

"She maintained at least five houses at any given time and often switched addresses to avoid being detected,'' said DCP Dhaliwal.

Sex racketeer attempts suicide in Tihar jail

New Delhi: The infamous mastermind of an inter-state prostitution racket, who used to supply call girls at farmhouses and five-star hotels attempted suicide in the high-security Tihar jail in New Delhi, police said on Tuesday.

Sex-racketeer Geeta Arora alias Sonu Punjaban, tried to commit suicide around 9.30 p.m. on Monday by consuming sleeping pills and then hanging herself from a ventilator by using her stole.

"One of her co-inmates of jail number six, where she has been lodged after her arrest, saw her attempting to commit suicide. The co-inmates raised an alarm, after which Sonu was rushed to Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital and is stated to be out of danger. Sonu was later taken back to Tihar jail on Tuesday morning," Tihar Jail spokesperson Sunil Gupta told IANS.

Dramatic rescue of a bride who attempted suicide

"A few days back a mobile phone was recovered from her possession regarding which she was being interrogated. To avoid interrogation, she planned the whole suicide drama," said Mr Gupta.

Sonu was arrested from south Delhi in April 2011 when she came there to strike a deal. That was Sonu's third arrest for running a prostitution racket.

Sonu is known to have close links with the underworld as well. She is the wife of slain gangster Hemant, who was killed in a shootout in April 2006. Earlier, she was married to Vijay and Deepak, Hemant's elder brothers, who were also killed in different shootouts.

Crime Patrol: Ahmedabad woman, daughter kill Mumbai stockbroker, cut him into 17 pieces (Episode 207, 208 on 2nd-3rd Feb 2013)

PART 1

PART 2

The Inside Story
AHMEDABAD: A woman and her daughter from the Maninagar area of Ahmedabad ended the life of a Mumbai stockbroker - with whom both were having an affair - cutting him 17 times, to annex his Rs 17 crore property. Mukti Shah, from the western Mumbai suburb of Kandivli, was found dead in the Anand district of Gujarat on December 12. The 52-year-old woman and her 30-year-old daughter, who were arrested by the Anand police on Friday, have confessed to committing the murder.

Shah was killed near Vasad village en route from Ahmedabad to Mumbai. On Sunday, the local crime branch officials recovered the power of attorney for the Rs 17 crore property, which is located in Panvel on the outskirts of Navi Mumbai.

Local crime branch inspector R D Dabhi said that the accused are educated and upwardly mobile. The daughter is a fashion designer who had crafted the plan to make Shah sign the power of attorney in her name six months ago.

Officials said that this was the first instance of a mother and daughter being involved in such a brutally executed murder. Interestingly, the first clue of a woman being involved in the murder was picked up by Anand superintendent of police who found a plastic bag containing vegetables and a dupatta in Shah's car.

Anand police requested the Ahmedabad police to scan call data records which highlighted frequent calls to the two women. They were then picked up for interrogation.

The women told police officials said that Shah first came in touch with the woman during his frequent visits to Ahmedabad. The two started an affair and the woman even gave her husband's retirement money to Shah.

Later, her daughter too began an affair with Shah and he would regularly go on trips with either the mother or the daughter.

When the daughter found that Shah was a rich man and had property in Panvel, a plan began to germinate. On one outing with Shah, she ensured that he became inebriated and had him sign the power of attorney. Later, the two women decided to eliminate him.

Third time unlucky

The mother-daughter duo wanted to use poison - with which dogs are put to sleep - to kill Shah, but could not draw the poison into a syringe. They then mixed this poison in his tea. When Shah started feeling groggy, the daughter made him sit in the car saying that she would drive him to Mumbai. Her mother sat in the back seat.

When the women were sure that Shah had become unconscious, they cut his jugular vein and other veins and dumped him in the car to die.

The two confessed that this was their third attempt to finish off Shah. Earlier, the daughter had gone to Lonavala with Shah and had tried to push him off a cliff. When she failed, she again tried to poison Shah in Panvel by spiking his drink, which Shah did not touch.

The third time around, the mother lent her a hand and the two succeeded.

They wanted to be dead sure

After attacking Shah, the two women fled from the car. They were spotted by a motorcyclist who asked them if they were in trouble. The two cooked up a story that they were involved in an accident and needed help. The motorcyclist dropped them at Borsad. After getting down, the two were worried that Shah may still be alive. They took a rickshaw back to the spot to confirm that he indeed was dead.

Crime Patrol: Doctor runs baby selling racket, held

The Inside Story

baby_selling_racketBangalore, December 28: In a startling incident that sparked speculations of a child trafficking racket in the City, the owner of a private nursing home at Neelasandra was caught red-handed while selling an infant on Thursday.

During a preliminary probe by the Child Welfare Committee (CWC), the accused Parvin, a gynaecologist, confessed to selling at least four newborns since 2004. The arrest comes days after a baby went missing from Vani Vilas Hospital in the City.

Besides the 48-year-old doctor, who is also the owner of Getwell Hospital, the Ashoknagar police have arrested her son Harsha, 24, who acted as an intermediary in the deal. The police have rescued the baby boy and referred him to the Indira Gandhi Institute of Child Health. He is said to be in good health. However, neither the baby nor his parents have been identified, the police said.

CWC sources told Deccan Herald that the doctor denied being part of a larger racket, but admitted that the infant was the fifth baby she had tried to sell. She also claimed that the baby’s mother had fled the nursing home after giving birth 20 days ago. Parvin told the CWC that she had sold only those babies who were abandoned by their mothers after giving birth at the nursing home.

Geeta Kulkarni, senior inspector with the Basaveshwara Nagar police station, is investigating the case. High drama preceded the doctor’s arrest. Acting on a tip-off that newborn babies were being sold for adoption at the Getwell Hospital, a TV channel had attempted a sting operation on Parvin some months ago. However, the doctor had denied any such activity in the hospital when a woman approached her to “buy” a baby for adoption. The woman left behind her visiting card for Parvin to contact her, in case she came across any orphaned baby. A week ago, Parvin called the woman.

Sources said the doctor had initially quoted Rs 3 lakh for the baby, but agreed to sell the baby for Rs 85,000 after negotiations. This was when the CWC and the City police entered the scene. The woman had told Parvin that she needed the baby for a friend.

An elaborate trap was laid by Joint Commissioner (crime-west) Pranab Mohanty to  catch the doctor red-handed. Roopa Hadagali, a sub-inspector with the Upparpet police station headed the operation. She went to the hospital posing as the woman’s friend.
“I and one of my colleagues posed as a couple willing to adopt a child and trapped the doctor on Thursday afternoon. We paid Rs 20,000 as agreed before as advance and the doctor handed over the baby to us,” she said. Harsha, the doctor’s son, acted as an intermediary. A police team, waiting outside, barged into the nursing home immediately after the sub-inspector came out with the baby.

The doctor and her son were arrested and the money recovered.  Police sources said Parvin had started the hospital in 2003.  She was married to a retired Army officer, Colonel Prakash.

The couple have two children, a daughter who is pursuing medical studies at Vaidehi Hospital, Whitefield, and Harsha, a BE in computer science, is preparing for the civil services examination.

The Ashoknagar police have registered a case against the mother-son duo under Section 372 of the IPC, for trafficking minors.  The accused, if convicted, can be imprisonment for a maximum of 10 years.
Accused doctor had ‘sold’ four babies since 2004

Bangalore, December 28: Dr Parvin of the Get Well Hospital, who was caught red-hand on Thursday while selling off a new born baby for adoption, is said to have been involved in selling of babies since 2004.

Sister Jacintha Lobo, member, Child Welfare Committee, Karnataka, who questioned the accused told Deccan Herald that Dr Parvin was not repentant of what she had done and, had admitted that this was not the first baby that she had sold. In her statement, she has confessed that she was involved in such an act since 2004 and had sold at least five babies for adoptions, including the latest one.

Dr Parvin has reportedly said that she had never stolen babies nor forced any parents to give up their babies, but used to give away only those babies abandoned by their mothers after the delivery at her hospital.

She has reportedly said that in 2004, an unwed girl gave birth to a baby girl at her hospital and, fled the hospital leaving the baby. As an issueless Hasheem Bhai, a biriyani vendor near her hospital, wanted to adopt a child, Dr Parvin gave the baby to him and took nominal money from him. This was the first baby the accused had sold off.

She is said to have sold three more babies in 2007, 2008 and 2010 for an amount the adopters paid. She saw nothing wrong in this as she felt that she was helping childless couples in getting a kid and, the abandoned babies a better life.

Speaking about the Thursday’s case, Dr Parvin told Jacintha Lobo that a girl in her twenties turned up at her hospital 20 days ago and gave birth to the baby boy. She said that it was a normal delivery and, the girl had left the hospital a few hours after the delivery. However, she failed to give “credible” details about the identity of the girl.
Child at IGICH

Doctors at the Indira Gandhi Institute of Child Health, where the rescued baby has been admitted, said the the baby was doing well, although it was under-weight.

“The baby is just 1.75 kgs.  We have collected blood samples for conducting certains tests and the results are expected on Friday.  Based on the reports, if there is any problem, appropriate treatment will be given,” a doctor said.

The city police also brought the parents of the new born baby boy, who was stolen from Vani Vilas Hospital a week ago, to check whether it was their baby.  However, they confirmed that it was not their child.

Meanwhile, Meena Jain, Chairperson, CWC met the Police Commissioner Jyothi Prakash Mirji and sought a detailed inquiry into the case.  “This menace has been rampant across the country and, the Bangalore police have done a good work in busting the racket. We will peruse the case and take it to its logical end. The commissioner has assured of a thorough probe,” she said.
