Koparkhairane: The local police arrested a 26-year-old youth, identified as Rohit Devlekar, as an accused in the murder of 65-year-old woman identified as Meerabai Sonawane. The victim was killed on November 17 by her grand daughter's friend who shared her room. The key accused had allegedly killed the old woman for the Rs 1 lakh cash that the old woman had got from the builder under the SRA scheme in Kurla area.
The victim's corpse was found near the Ghansoli creek in sector-20, Koparkhairane on November 18. As per the post mortem report, the cause of her death was due to strangulation by neck.The key accused woman identified as Nasreen alias Annu Shaikh (20), a resident of Koparkhairane was arrested on November 26 from a lodge near DY Patil College in Nerul while, her boyfriend Rohit Devlekar was arrested from Sarsole village near Nerul on December 6.
The accused Nasreen accompanied Sonawane to the bank to withdraw Rs 1 lakh cash and she supposedly got greedy after seeing the money and hatched a plan to kill the woman. She allegedly strangulated her and stole the cash from her and later dumped her corpse near the Ghansoli creek. The corpse was discovered after locals complained of foul stench.
A source at the Koparkhairane police station informed that the accused Devlekar belongs to a well-to-do family as his father is employed with the railways. While, the accused Nasreen was pursing her second year B.Sc and has two minor girls aged 2 years and 5 years. For earning a living she used to work at a massage centre.
SPI Mukund Hatote informed: "Nasreen was arrested after we obtained the CCTV footage images at a fast food joint in sector-17, Vashi, which showed that she had accompanied the victim to the eatery on November 17 and was the last person seen with the victim.
The CDR (call data record) showed that Nasreen had called Devlekar after midnight of November 18 after reportedly killing Sonawane. After that, they escaped to Nashik and returned to Nerul to splurge before leaving for Karjat where they stayed at a lodge. The duo kept changing places to evade arrest."
SPI Hatote added, "A case has been arrested against the duo accused under Sections 302, 394, 212 and 202 of the IPC. The accused has been arrested and booked under Section 212 of the IPC for harbouring the offender, the key accused Nasreen Shaikh by hiding her at undisclosed locations. Out of the Rs 1 lakh stolen from the victim Sonawane, we have recovered Rs 45,000 from the accused. The accused has been remanded in police custody till December 10."
