Crime Patrol: Thieves dig 100-foot tunnel to steal crores from Haryana bank's strongroom (Episode 488, 489 on 28th, 29th Mar 2015)

PART 1

PART 2

The Inside Story
Thieves dig 100-foot tunnel to steal crores from Haryana bank's strongroom

CHANDIGARH: In a Bollywood-style heist, thieves dug a 100-foot tunnel to Punjab National Bank in Sonepat district and broke into several lockers decamping with cash, jewellery and other valuables.

The bank is located in a residential-cum-commercial area, near Old Bus Stand in Gohana city.

The daring robbery came to light on Monday morning when bank manager Devender Malik opened the strongroom at 10am. He found the almirahs in the strongroom broken open and Rs 40 lakh cash missing. Apart from this, 88 out of 360 lockers had been prised open and their contents like jewellery and cash missing.

Sources say the loss could run into crores of rupees.

The house from where the robbers started digging the tunnel is unoccupied as it is a disputed property. The robbers seem to have been digging for some days as the tunnel was 2.5 feet in circumference. Tools and earth dumped in the vacant house indicate that the burglars knew the exact location of the strongroom and lockers in the bank.

Preliminary investigations also suggest that the culprits chose Sunday to strike since the area would be deserted.

Unlike other places where strongrooms and locker rooms have at least one feet of concrete covered with a thick iron sheet, this one had an ordinary floor which was easily punctured by the burglars. "We have constituted teams to crack the case at the earliest,'' said Sonepat SP Arun Nehra.

Bank officials have asked the clients whose lockers were broken open to provide details of their contents.

Sonipat heist plotter found dead as cops crack case

SONIPAT: Three days after thieves were found to have cleaned out 78 lockers from a bank in Sonipat, cops on Thursday claimed to have cracked the multi-crore heist case even as the alleged mastermind was mysteriously found dead in his car.

Police said Mahipal — the alleged brain behind the heist who owned the abandoned house from where the thieves dug an 84-foot-long tunnel to the Punjab National Bank's locker room — had committed suicide. His body was found on Panipat road around 3pm. It had no visible injuries and police said the autopsy report is awaited.

Haryana police have arrested three of the four other suspects. All of them are from the neighbouring Kathwal village and, strangely, none has a major criminal record. Police said they have recovered 39kg of gold and silver ornaments and some cash.

Among those arrested is Satish, a property dealer, Surender, a lab technician and Balraj, an 'agriculturist'. Search is on to nab the fourth suspect, Rajesh.

"Mahipal was the main conspirator. He involved the four others to execute the job. We suspect Mahipal committed suicide because he feared being caught," Arun Singh, Sonipat superintendent of police, told TOI.

The bank branch where the heist took place is on Gohana road. TOI visited the spot and found a 10-12 feet wide street separated it from Mahipal's house, where the tunnel began. The strong room, where the lockers were present, is at the extreme end of the building that housed the bank.

Police claim the four thieves would visit the house at night and work on the tunnel till dawn. Cops said they used heavy iron rods, spades and trowels (khurpa) to dig the tunnel and they broke open the locker using a jack, said officials.

The digging was done with such finesse that telephone cables and water pipelines in the tunnel remained completely untouched. The tunnel was about three feet high and two to three feet wide.

Haryana police have arrested three of the four other suspects. (PTI photo)

"The bank has 350 lockers. The thieves managed to decamp with valuables kept in 78 of them. They broke open a total 86 lockers," said a source.

Cops were taken aback by the profile of the suspects. "It is surprising that these novices managed to make such an elaborate plan and execute it with precision. Also, the mysterious death of Mahipal raises more questions than answers about this bank heist. The real story, I feel, is yet to come out," said an investigating official. He did not rule out the possibility of some bank employee or customer being involved. But the police, on record, denied any such theory.

The involvement of PMO, which sent a senior official to look into this case a day after it was reported, has also led to speculation here.

Officials said they got a crucial lead during routine questioning. "We were informed about the heist on Monday when one of the customers went to operate his locker. He raised an alarm and called in senior bank officials. We rounded up every resident, shop owner and even the vendors near the bank. One of our informers told us about Surender who frequented the abandoned building. We nabbed him from the Kathwal village and he confessed to his involvement in the crime. He also told us about his accomplices." said the police.

Meanwhile, the customers who had their lockers with the Punjab National Bank continued to protest outside the bank to demand immediate recovery of their valuables. They claimed that the bank did not use safety measures as per the guidelines of the RBI for the strong room.

"The base of the building was weak. That's why the thieves could easily drill into it. Also, there were no CCTV cameras or alarms," said Saroj Ravi, one of the customers.

Crime Patrol: Woman held for killing toddler grand-daughter with cerebral palsy (Episode 487 on 27th March 2015)

The Inside Story
The Badlapur police investigating the death of a two-and-half-year-old girl, initially suspected to be a case of kidnapping, on Saturday arrested the child’s 45-year-old grandmother for her murder.

According to the police, the arrested suspect, Mangal Borse, has allegedly confessed that she drowned her own grand-daughter as the child was suffering from cerebral palsy and she was fed up of questions from relatives about her illness.

On August 15 morning, the Badlapur police had registered a kidnapping case on a complaint lodged by Ketki Hire’s parents, after they could not locate their daughter. Later, in the evening, they found Ketki’s body in a nullah at Ganesh Ghat in Badlapur.

“The autopsy report of the victim revealed she died due to drowning. We then called her grand-mother Mangal for questioning. Mangal had earlier given a statement that between 9.30 am and 10 am, while she was taking Ketki in an autorickshaw to drop her to her parents’ house near Apte Wadi in Badlapur, the child was kidnapped by an unidentified woman who sped away in an autorickshaw,” said Ishwar Aandhalkar, senior police inspector from Badlapur Police station.

“After the cause of Ketki’s death was found to be drowning and it was learnt that she had died around 6 am, our suspicions were aroused as it was inconsistent with the statement given by her grand-mother Mangal,” said Aandhalkar.“Neither the Hire couple nor the victim’s grand-parents had received any ransom call. We were suspecting some family dispute behind the killing, but on Saturday, we received the autopsy report and questioned the grand-mother. She confessed to killing Ketki.

The girl was suffering from celebral palsy. Mangal would religiously take care of her when Ketki’s parents went to work. In fact, the child stayed with Mangal and when Ketki’s parents had holidays, was she dropped off at their house,” said Aandhalkar.

According to the police, Mangal killed Ketki owing to constant questions from neighbours and relatives and her concerns about how the child would lead her life.

“Mangal stated in her confession that she felt embarrassed to reply to relatives about her grand-daughter’s illness and disability. Repeated questioning by neighbours and relatives had pushed her into a negative frame of mind about her grand-daughter, so she decided to kill her. She took the girl and threw her in a nullah near Ganga Ghat and came back,”added Aandhalkar.

Crime Patrol: Ambarnath woman killed by son’s college-going friends (Episode 485, 486 on 21th, 22th March 2015)

PART 1

PART 2

The Inside Story
AMBERNATH: The police on Sunday arrested three college students, including a minor, for the murder of a 52-year-old housewife, Snehal Umrodkar, in Ambernath (E).

The police said the minor was a 17-year-old engineering student in his third year and all three accused were close friends of Snehal's

son Aaditya.

The adult accused were identified as Virendra Naidu (22) and Kunal Singh (22).

Naidu is a first year BCom student and Singh is doing his MCom. All three accused are residents of the well-known Royal Park building in Ambernath and belong to well-educated families.

The police said Naidu was the main accused and he had been failing in college exams for some years. They said he wanted money to bribe someone from his college to clear his exams.

The police said that Naidu and the others plotted the murder to lay their hands on money at Aaditya's house.

The investigation suggested that on October 17, when Aaditya and his father, Vivek, were not at home, Singh and the minor accused entered the Umrodkar residence to ask where Aaditya was and learnt both he and his father were away.

They then asked for Aaditya's mobile number. The police said that as Snehal was checking Aaditya's mobile number in a diary, she

was attacked.

The culprits then fled with ornaments worth Rs 30,000.

Ambarnath woman killed by son’s college-going friends: cops

The Shivaji Nagar police in Ambarnath cracked the murder case of a 52-year-old woman with the arrest of three collegians on Monday.

The woman, Snehal Umrodkar, a housewife, was found dead on October 17 with her throat cut and her gold mangalsutra missing.

The three arrested accused have been identified as Virendra Ajay Naidu (22), an FYBcom student from an Ambarnath college, Ashwin Kunal Ashok Kumar Singh (22) an MBA student and a 17-year-old engineering student from a Karjat college.

All three are residents of Royal Park, a residential society in Ambarnath East. Naidu was a childhood friend of the woman’s son, police said.

“Naidu had continuously failed on one subject at college and needed cash to get his marks fixed. We are also checking on the illegal racket of passing students,” said an officer from Shivaji Nagar police station.

Police said Umrodkar lived with her husband Vivek, 58, and son, Aditya, 22, at Ambarnath East. On October 17, Aditya went to visit a relative’s house at Mulund while Vivek left the house at 4.30pm for work.

When he returned home at 9.15pm he opened the door to the sight of his wife covered in blood and lying on the ground. Her glasses were broken, her mouth taped shut, her hands were tied with cello tape and her throat had been slit with some sharp weapon. Only the gold mangalsutra that Umrodkar was wearing was missing.

“Naidu is a childhood friend of Aditya and the two others befriended him a few months ago. Naidu was very close to the Umrodkar family and used to visit their residence often. On the day of the incident, Naidu was chatting with Aditya and in the course of the conversation took details of who was present at home and when his father would be back. The trio then landed up at the Umrodkar residence wearing gloves, overpowered Snehal Umrodkar, tied her up and cut her throat. They then ransacked the cupboard in the bedroom but found nothing of value. They finally left with the woman’s gold mangalsutra,” said HN Shinde, inspector, Shivaji Nagar police station.

The Inside Story
New Delhi : A 21-year-old aspiring actor was murdered here by his arrested script writer friend for Rs.2 lakh, police said Monday.

Shanti Deep Verma, 31, an alumnus of Film and Television Institute of India, Pune, killed Sumit Tewari as he needed money, police said after questioning the accused.

Verma was arrested 10 days after the body of victim Tewari was recovered Feb 23 from the former's house in Mandawali in east Delhi, police said.

A team of Delhi police arrested Verma from Bahraich in Uttar Pradesh Sunday morning.

"Verma needed money as none of his scripts were getting sold. He pretended to offer work in his forthcoming film to Tewari, whom he was befriended through the Facebook, and abducted him," said a police officer.

On Feb 21, Verma called Tewari and asked him to do a rehearsal at his home for a film.

When Tewari came, Verma made him do several rehearsal after reading him portions of the script of the film. He then showed him a portion of a Hindi movie "Fas Gaye Re Obama" in which hands and legs of an actor were tied and a cloth tied on his mouth.

Verma asked Tewari to enact that scene. He tied the legs and hands of Tewari and also gagged him but refused to free him unless he got Rs.2 lakh from his parents, police said.

As the victim tried to raise an alarm, Verma strangled him, police said.

After stuffing Tewari body in suitcase, Verma made a Rs.2 lakh ransom call to his father. He fled to Uttar Pradesh after he failed to extract the ransom money, police said.

Tewari had done a three-month course in modelling and acting from Noida. He was looking forward to becoming a model and TV actor, police said.

Scriptwriter murders aspiring actor as kidnap plan goes awry

The lure of easy money after a spate of failures in the world of glamour was enough to inspire this 31-year-old struggling scriptwriter to enact a kidnap-murder saga.

AdTech AdUnable to sell his four creative scripts, the writer decided to kidnap a vulnerable aspiring actor for ransom, but ended up murdering him in cold blood.

The horrible kidnapping and murder of Sumit Tewari of Karawal Nagar in the Capital by the accused Shanti Deep Verma, an alumnus of Film and Television Institute of India, Pune is a gory tale of glamour, greed and deceit.

Tewari was deceived into performing a role in which he tied himself up and later informed that it was a plan to actually kidnap him for ransom. When he resisted, Verma strangulated him to death, packed his body in a briefcase and fled.

The police arrested Verma from his native place in Bahraich, Uttar Pradesh on March 2, where he had gone to meet his father. After executing the murder on February 21, Verma stayed in Kanpur, Varanasi, Allahabad and Lucknow to avoid getting caught.

His unsold scripts were titled as 'Love in Kasba', 'Sampark Kranti', 'Mohlat' and 'Pehchaan'.

Verma, a journalism and mass communication professional, befriended Tewari on Facebook in February and lured him with a role in an upcoming movie. Tewari, who was eager to bag the role, started visiting Verma at his Mandawali residence for rehearsals.

Sumit TewariSumit Tewari, the aspiring actor. The first two days - February 19 and 20 - went well and Tewari returned to his house, too happy about his upcoming project. However, on February 21, Verma showed Bollywood movie Phas Gaye Re Obama to Tewari, asking him to perform the scene wherein a character is tied up and gagged.

"Tewari, still unaware about Verma's plot, did it with ease. When he was tied up and gagged, Verma revealed his plan to kidnap him for ransom," said Dheeraj Kumar, additional deputy commissioner of police-I (north-east).

He informed Tewari that he would be left tied up for around three days till he got the ransom amount of Rs.2 lakh from his family.

Sensing that he had landed into big trouble, Tewari, a passout of Akash Institute of Marwah Studio in Noida, attempted to free himself. However, Verma climbed on Tewari's chest.

"He strangulated Tewari to death and packed the body in a briefcase," Kumar said. On February 21, Verma made a ransom call of Rs.2 lakh to Tewari's family.

The family members immediately informed the police. Tewari had told his family about the new assignment and also shared Verma's address. On February 22, Verma realised he could be caught anytime and thus locked his accommodation, leaving the body inside and fled.

"On February 23, the police broke the lock of Verma's residence, only to find the body in a briefcase. The body was shifted to GTB hospital and later handed over to the family," Kumar added.

During investigation, several raids were conducted at suspected hideouts and Verma was finally nabbed from Bahraich.

New Delhi: He was aspiring to be a script writer for movies, tried to implement one and landed in jail for murder. An alumni of the prestigious Pune Film Institute, Shanti Deep Verma (31), was apprehended on Saturday from UP's Bahraich for allegedly murdering an aspiring actor Sumit Tiwari (21) at his rented flat in east Delhi's Mandawli area 11 days ago for Rs two lakh.

Verma made the victim watch a portion of 'Fas Gaye Re Obama' in which the hands and legs of the hero are tied and his mouth gagged and asked him to enact it, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (North-East) Dheeraj Kumar said on Monday. "Then Verma tied Tiwari's legs and hands and gagged his mouth. He told the actor that he would release him only after he gets Rs two lakh from his parents. Crime Patrol: 9 yr old boy killed in wardha body parts eaten (Episode 482, 483 on 14th, 15th March, 2015)

Part 1

Part 2

The Inside Story

PART 1

PART 2

The Inside Story
Two sisters, who were declared dead after their bodies being identified by family members, have been found alive in Ghaziabad, following which the police have detained their parents.

The two girls, aged 16 and 14, were found in Ghaziabad yesterday along with two persons --Gaurav Chaturvedi and Atul Gupta, police said.

Chaturvedi and Gupta have been accused of kidnapping and 'murdering' them, Superintendent of Police Sunil Kumar Saxena said.

The girls have been sent for medical examination, he said.

Their parents, Bhure Shukla and Hemlata Shukla, have been detained for giving wrong information, the SP said.

Bodies of two girls, packed in sacks, were found in Noon river under Dhamni bridge in Churkhi police station on October 4. The family members had identified the badly decomposed bodies as their daughters.A day later, agitated locals went on a rampage in Orai town and indulged in brick-batting in which nine persons, including five policemen, were injured.

While the family members alleged that the girls were kidnapped on September 22, police claimed they had eloped on the same night.

Family members had kept the bodies at Machchar crossing and accused police of shielding the accused.

Subsequently, four policemen, including in-charge of Kuthaund Praveen Yadav, inspector Santosh Kumar posted at Orai police station, SO Dhaniram Bhaskar and Prem Sagar were suspended, besides SP Rakesh Shanker was removed.

On October 6, the state government had suspended former SP Rakesh Shanker.

Several mobile numbers which were connected with the incident were put on surveillance after which the girls were recovered and the accused arrested, SP Saxena said.

Efforts are on to identify the girls, whose bodies were recovered from sacks, he said adding, samples of viscera have been sent for testing.

Bodies of 'missing' sisters found in river

Lucknow, Oct 5, 2014:

Tension prevailed in Orai town, about 200 km from Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, when a mob clashed with the police on Sunday after bodies of two sisters, who had “gone missing” a few days ago, were recovered from a river.

The police on Saturday recovered the bodies of the girls, Neelam, 17, and Kamini, 15, (names changed), stuffed in two sacks from the river Noon under the Dhamni bridge. The police said the girls gave their mother a drink laced with sedatives and eloped with two youths last month.

However, their family had filed a complaint against Gaurav Dixit, a married man with whom, as the police said, the elder sister was in love. The girls’ father accused Dixit of kidnapping and murdering them.

The police suspect involvement of more than one person, as the “sacks were sewed properly and heavy stones had been stuffed in them so that they didn’t float.”

Case registered

A case has been registered against Dixit and six others who have been absconding, the police added.

On Sunday, the enraged members of the girls’ family and others staged a protest, blocking traffic on the national highway.

As the protesters pelted the police personnel with stones, the police resorted to lathi charge and used water canons to disperse them. Over two dozen people have been taken into custody in this connection.

The State government has suspended SP Rakesh Shankar, station house officer Kataundh, an inspector attached with the Orai police station and two constables.

Crime Patrol: Adopted girl held for killing parents in Vadodara (Episode 476, 477 on 28th Feb and 1st March 2015)

PART 1

PART 2

The Inside Story
VADODARA: This childless couple adopted her when she was just two months old. But the girl, now 16, is in police custody for allegedly killing her foster parents in cold blood.

On Tuesday, police arrested the girl with her 22-year-old boyfriend, Sapan Purani, for murdering Shrihari Vinod, 63, and his wife Sneha, 60. Shockingly, the couple was killed on August 3 and the murder came to light only on Monday night.

The police got a missing persons complaint from a relative of the deceased. When cops reached their house in Tirupati Society in Manjalpur, they found the decomposed bodies.

A preliminary investigation revealed the girl killed her parents because they were against her relationship and had fights over the issue.

However, what surprised the police was that the girl and Sapan visited the home frequently after committing the murder. "Since they failed to dispose the bodies, she began pouring acid on them, hoping that they would get decomposed fully. Sapan used to regularly spray room freshener," said Gautam Parmar, deputy commissioner of police (south).

Vinod had retired from a nationalized bank while Sneha worked with LIC. The girl is a class XI student of a CBSE school in Manjalpur.

Police questioned the girl after learning that she wasn't getting along with the couple and had started living separately. According to the police, on August 3, the girl mixed sleeping pills in the couple's food, smothered them and stabbed them.

Cops say the duo has confessed to their crime. Ghod says, “During their questioning, the daughter and Sapan Purani have confessed that they killed the couple in August by stabbing them repeatedly and then sprayed the body with a local acidic chemical.

They then locked the premises to make it appear that the family had moved out from the residence for some time. They said that they had decided to kill Vinod and his wife because they were opposed to the daughter’s love affair with Sapan as they wanted her to complete her education.”
