The Inside Story

NAVI MUMBAI: The APMC police officials have successfully detected the murder case of a pregnant woman whose body was found dumped in an open drain in Koparkhairane earlier this month.

With the arrest of the murder accused, Dangalsingh Karmawat (29), a resident of Shivpuri district in Madhya Pradesh, the cops have been able to unravel the bizarre history of over 12 years which eventually led to the strangulation of the 25-year-old woman.

"The accused and the woman, now identified as Kismat Guddawat alias Shilpa, were engaged to each other by their families around 12 years ago. However, due to steep dowry demand by the girl's family based in Rajasthan, the engagement was later broken by the accused boy's family. The girl was later sent to Mumbai to work as a waitress in a bar at Thane," said DCP (zone 1) Shahji Umap.

Reportedly, in the Banjara community, it is the girl's family which demands dowry due to a lopsided boy-girl ratio.

Around three years back, the accused somehow got in touch with Shilpa again when he had visited his two sisters' residences in Navi Mumbai.

The two regularly kept in touch through their cell phones, although Karmawat had already got married to another woman and has three kids. Around a month-and-half ago, he developed intimate relationship with Shilpa, though she did not reportedly tell him that she was pregnant because of her affair with another youth from Thane.

"On the night of February 10, the victim and the accused had a major fight in Koparkhairane as she persistently demanded him to marry her and take her back to the village. When Karmawat told her that he cannot do so as he is already married, Shilpa threatened to complain to the village panchayat about him having an illicit affair with her," said DCP Umap.

Afraid of the repercussions in case Shilpa complained at his village, he strangled her to death and then wrapped the body in a bedsheet to dispose it at the open drain in Bonkode.

A team of APMC police station led by senior inspector Maya More and API Ulhas Kadam, soon circulated the photos of the deceased woman at various police stations and also questioned a few bar girls. Eventually, one bar girl managed to identify the body from its face photo and further informed the cops about her Thane based lover.

On quizzing the Thane based youth, the police team realized that he could not have possibly murdered her. Later, on learning about her broken engagement 12 years back and later becoming friendly again with Karmawat, the cops instinctively knew that he could have killed her. He was arrested earlier this week.

The accused is reportedly feeling remorse for killing his pregnant ex-fiancee in the heat of the moment, but he told the cops that he was not aware that she was pregnant or that she had an affair with another Thane based youth. Impressed by the quick investigation carried out by the zone-1 police team, the Commissioner of Police, K L Prasad, has given a Rs 15000 cash award to the officials who worked on this case.
