20 days on, missing accountant's body found in Kalyan civic toilet
KALYAN: The decomposed body of a 23-year-old woman, who worked as an accountant in a hospital in Mulund, was found in a gunny bag in the septic tank of a toilet run by the Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation in Kailash Nagar on Sunday afternoon.
The woman, Reshma Birje, who worked at Platinum hospital, was missing since May 5 and her family had filed a missing complaint with the Kolsewadi police.
The residents of the area had opened the septic tank as the toilet had been choked for the past two days. It was then that they smelled an odour and identified the gunny bag as the source of the stench. The residents alerted the police when they discovered the woman's body.
The victim's elder brother, Ganpat Birje, identified her body from the clothes she was wearing. Ganpat alleged that both, he and his sister, were being harassed by a builder's son, who wanted to marry her. They had rejected his proposal.
Reshma's family alleged negligence by the police because the cops did not probe their suspicion. Reshma's family alleged that despite them telling the police that they suspected the builder's son and three of his friends for their daughter's disappearance, the cops had not taken any steps.
They added that the police had mocked them saying the girl might have eloped with someone.
Indrajeet Vishwakarma, assistant police inspector of Kolsewadi police station, said, "We have a lodged a murder case against unidentified persons and are probing the matter, including the family's allegation against some people."
Reshma Birje, an accountant at a Mulund hospital, had been missing since May 5. Her family who had lodged a missing person's complaint, has alleged that Reshma was being harassed by a builder's son to marry him. They further blamed the police for negligence as they did not take any action against the builder's son or his friends.

COPS QUIZ BROTHER, NEIGHBOUR OF GIRL FOUND IN SEPTIC TANK
The Kolsewadi police investigating the murder of 23-yearold Reshma Birje, who went missing on May 6 and whose decomposed body was found in Kalyan on Sunday, have questioned her brother and neighbour in their hunt for clues to the accused.
On Monday, Jagdish Birje, brother of Reshma, was questioned for several hours by the police, who also summoned the unnamed neighbour to whom Reshma had handed over her house keys when she left on May 6.
With no breakthrough in the case yet, Reshma's call detail records are also being checked, and all those with whom she had spoken on that day are being questioned.
Police are also examining her profile on social networking sites and chat details for more information about her personal life.
The body of Reshma, who worked as an accountant in Mulund's Platinum Hospital, was found in a septic tank at Kalyan on Sunday afternoon.
The tank is located around 50 feet from her maternal uncle's home. Reshma's brother Jagdish, 25, was sleeping at the uncle's place that day, while Reshma and her elder brother Ganpat, 28, were at their residence in Kailash Nagar at Kalyan (E).
Police said that Reshma used to leave for work around 9:30 am and keep the house keys with a neighbour. She would usually drop in at a relative's shop on the way to Vitthalwadi Railway Station.
On May 6, after giving the keys to the neighbour, Reshma left but did not turn up at the relative's shop.
Police suspect that for some reason she was either prevented from reaching the shop, or she took a different route to the station. They say it is not possible for someone to have kidnapped a girl in the busy locality at that hour as there is usually a large number of people around.
"Someone known to the deceased could have convinced her to join him via some other route. We are questioning several people, including relatives and friends and other suspects named by her brothers," said Senior Inspector Jagdish Lohankar of Kolsewadi Police Station.
Meanwhile, Reshma's last rites were performed by her family on Monday evening.

2 months on, neighbour held for accountant’s murder
KALYAN: Two months after the decomposed body of a 23-year-old woman, who worked as an accountant in a Mulund hospital, was found in a gunny bag inside the septic tank of a public toilet run by the Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation, the crime branch on Sunday arrested the victim's neighbour and childhood friend Sidhesh Hule (23) and booked him for murder.
Crime branch officers claimed that Sidhesh, who is hotel management student, wanted to have a relationship with the victim, Reshma Birje, but when she refused, he killed her and dumped the body inside the public toilet's septic tank. They said Sidhesh's father Shankar was one of the complainants in the case.
Birje was missing since May 5, and her family filed a missing person's complaint with the Kolsewadi police. On May 26, Shankar and other residents, opened the septic tank of the toilet to find out why it was stinking and found her body stuffed in a gunny bag.
As the Kolsewadi police failed to crack the case, Thane police commissioner K P Raghuvanshi transferred the case to the Kalyan crime branch. "During investigation, our team concentrated on neighbours and those close to the victim's family as the body was found near her home," said Praveen Pawar, deputy commissioner of police, crime branch.
The police said Birje had many suitors in the area. They quizzed more than 100 locals and at least six youths who had proposed to her, but did not get any leads. They shifted their focus on locals who live alone, and zeroed in on Sidhesh.
"Sidhesh said on May 6, he told Reshma that his mother had some work with her. The victim did not know that his mother was at her hometown and father at work. When she came to his place, he tried to take advantage of her. She protested and Sidhesh stabbed her to death with a sharp object," said Mangesh Sawant, senior inspector, Kalyan crime branch. He stuffed the body in a gunny bag and kept it at his place. The next day, he dumped it into the septic tank of the nearby civic toilet.
