The Inside Story

MUMBAI: A 25-year-old man, who was arrested from Powai with an illegal countrymade pistol on Saturday, shocked his interrogators by confessing that he, along with three friends, had killed his wife on August 29, and dumped her body at Malshej Ghat in Thane district. The crime branch unit X has informed the Thane district police, who are trying to trace the victim's remains with the help of trekkers.

Santosh Rajput reportedly told the police that his wife Divya (23) had left him after he was arrested in a robbery case a few months ago. "When she found out about his criminal background, she moved into her parents' place in Vashi with their three-month-old child. It angered Santosh and he decided to kill her," said additional commissioner of police (crime) Niket Kaushik.

After his release, Santosh went to meet Divya and convinced her to accompany him back home. But Santosh and his three friends reportedly drove Divya in a car to an isolated place and slit her throat with a chopper. They then dumped her body in Malshej Ghat. Divya's parents were unaware of her death as they assumed she was with him.

On Saturday, following a tip-off, crime branch officers picked up Santosh from Powai, where he was to meet a contact, and seized the pistol. He has been remanded into police custody till December 4.

During interrogation, Santosh reportedly broke down and told them that he had killed his wife in August. They contacted Divya's parents, who confirmed that she wasn't with them. His accomplices were also arrested. Police suspect Santosh's involvement in several other cases, including a petrol pump robbery in Pune. "He has been committing crimes since he was minor," said an officer.
