Crime Patrol: "Five men raped me, police asked how": Kolkata woman (Episode 134, 135 on 28-29 July 2012)

http://youtu.be/g5u7H-IKWmU

Kolkata: A 37-year-old woman said she was raped in a moving car in the heart of the metropolis earlier this month, and that, instead of taking action on her FIR, the Kolkata police asked her how she could be raped in a moving car by five men.

As per police reports, the mother of two and a former call centre employee was raped on the night of Feb 5. She was also severely beaten. The police complaint was filed Feb 9 while her medical examination was conducted Tuesday.

Talking about her ordeal to a Bengali news channel, she said: "I was raped at gun point by one Sharafat Ali inside a car in which I was given a lift. The man kept hitting me mercilessly even after he had finished raping me."

The victim said she had boarded the car because the lift was offered by a man Lavi Gidwani with whom she had a friendly chat a few minutes earlier at a club from where she was returning home late in the night.

"He looked and talked decent. But it was his friend Ali who sat beside me and I realised I was in trouble. I only remember the car going towards St Xavier's College (Park Street) ... later, I was kicked out of the car," she said.

The victim had undergone a medical examination herself Feb 9, the day she reported the matter to the police.

'It has been a week now, nothing has happened. I have been receiving phone calls threatening me not to approach the police. I am now apprehensive about my children and my family,' said the 37-year-old, adding that she was harassed and subjected to misbehaviour by police while lodging the complaint.

Gidwani's father, however, claimed that his son was out of the country at the time of the alleged crime.

The city police, meanwhile, promised swift action after TV channels showcased the woman's plight, and following allegations of inaction by her.

'We are looking into the matter with all sincerity and assure swift action. We are also looking into allegation of police misbehaviour and, if found guilty, they will be punished,' Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Damayanti Sen said.

Criticism won't deter me: Kolkata rape victim

Kolkata: The 37-year-old mother of two who was allegedly raped in a moving car earlier this month in Kolkata is determined to get justice. Speaking to CNN-IBN, she said that caustic remarks won't stop her in her fight for justice.

"I really didn't care about what anybody told me or said about me. I just believed in myself... And I knew what I had gone through. And I didn't want anyone else to go through that.

"I needed to get them for what they had done to me. I could not sleep. I actually can't sleep. I keep waking up in the middle of the night, screaming, and all that trauma and all that I am going through, is only visible and only felt by me and my daughters, who are with me continuously in this fight, you know, they are with me all the time and they are the ones that console me in the night when I am crying, or in the morning or parts of the day when I remember the incident.

"It's the very same reason I needed to stand up and fight and talk about it. The more I talk about it publicly, you know, as much as shame as I feel and as irritated and degraded I feel, the fact of those guys touching me, and doing the things they did to me... I was so defenceless at that time... But today I feel like.. I have all the support I need."

When asked about her struggle to bring her story out, she said, "To bring out the story I had to speak a thousand times, but I didn't care as long as the truth came out."

She also urged that rape victims should speak up and fight for justice. "I was so defenseless. But today I see the support for me. We need to talk about it. We must talk about this, it's important. There are a lot of animals out there," she said.

She also said that it was support from her family that helped her come out with her story. "I never wanted to go to the police or talk about it. I wanted to bury it in my heart. But my daughters, my family explained to me. I am so angry. I am not ashamed, I am angry that they can do this and get away with this. But I am glad they now know they can't," she said.

The alleged victim, however, refrained from commenting on the West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's remarks on the case. Mamata had labelled the rape victim a part of a greater conspiracy against her government.

Meanwhile the three accused who were arrested on Saturday have been sent to police custody till March 3. The main rape suspect is still at large.

The Inside Story

Mumbai: Mona (name changed) will now probably think twice before returning missed calls from unknown numbers.

The 16-year-old girl from the South Gopal Chandi area in West Bengal was forced into prostitution by her boyfriend, who she fell in love with after she returned his numerous missed calls on her mobile phone.

According to the police, Mona repeatedly received missed calls from an unknown number over a couple of days. A few days after she returned the calls with a missed call, the caller identified himself as Arabali alias Asgar Ashraf Mulla, 23, also from West Bengal.

The two developed a friendship and soon fell in love. On November 9, Mulla reportedly popped the question to Mona.

Mulla told her to come to Barasat railway station in West Bengal. The girl left home saying she was going to visit a friend.

She waited for hours at the station, but when he did not turn up, she called him. Mulla finally reached Barasat station and took her Sialda.

Mulla told Mona that they would stay for a few days at his uncle's place in Sialda and then would leave for Mumbai, where they would get married.

On November 13, Mulla brought Mona to Mumbai and introduced her to one Meena, who runs a prostitution racket. Mona was raped by about 16 people on several occasions at different places, the police said.

Mulla warned her against revealing her sexual abuse, said an officer from the Dongri police station. "

We raided a building in Dongri on November 18 after receiving a tip-off that it was being used to run a prostitution racket. We nabbed the victim, Meena and Mulla. The victim then narrated her ordeal to us, after which we sent her to the Dongri children's home," the officer said.

Crime Patrol: Man arrested for killing friend’s wife (Episode 131, 20 July 2012)

The Inside Story
The Ulhasnagar crime branch on Wednesday unraveled the mystery behind the disappearance of a 39-year-old woman from Ulhasnagar with the arrest of her husband’s friend.

According to police sources, the deceased, Rani Sukheja (39), left her Ulhasnagar residence on the morning of December 4 last year, informing her husband Kishore that she was going to attend a satsang. However, when she never returned, Mr Sukheja filed a missing person’s complaint.
An officer with the crime branch said, “We were conducting parallel inquiries into the matter, and last week received a tip-off about a garage mechanic who was telling his friends about seeing something suspicious. We tracked him down and questioned him. He told us that on the day that Rani went missing, he was called to Khadavli to repair a Maruti Van, and the driver had what looked like fresh blood on his clothes at the time.”

The police then traced the man in question, later identified as Dilip Megani (28), who turned out to be an old friend of Mr Sukheja’s. He confessed to have killed Rani, after which he took away her jewellery and dumped her body in a forest in Kumbharpada. Later, he sold the jewellery and the van used in the crime, and was assisted by his friend Sanny Madnani (48).
“Megani was having an affair with Rani, and she had started blackmailing him for money. Fed up of the threats, he decided to kill her and enlisted Madnani’s aid,” said Machindra Chavan, senior inspector, Ulhasnagar crime branch.

16th July 2012 - Madhumita Shukla murder case: High Court upholds life term of former MLA Amarmani Tripathi & Madhumani

16 July 2012

Nainital: The Uttarakhand High Court today upheld the life imprisonment awarded to former Samajwadi Party MLA Amarmani Tripathi, his wife and two others for the murder of poetess Madhumita Shukla.

A division bench of the High Court comprising Chief Justice Barin Ghosh and Justice UC Dhayani also awarded life imprisonment to Prakash Pandey, who was earlier let off by the Dehradun CBI court for want of evidence.

Rejecting the petition of the four convicts, the court said that no relief can be granted to Amarmani or any other convict since their role in Madhumita Shukla's murder has been proved by the CBI, said Virednra Singh Adhikari, counsel for Nidhi Shukla, said the murdered poetess' sister.

The court also directed the trial court to take Pandey into custody immediately.

Amarmani Tripathi, his wife Madhumani and two others Rohit Chaturvedi and Santosh Kumar Rai were convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment by the Dehradun court in 2007 for hatching a conspiracy and killing Ms Shukla in Lucknow in 2003.

The investigations revealed that the poetess was pregnant when she was murdered and both Pandey and Rai went to her house and shot her dead.

Today's ruling is a setback for Tripathi, who has made several attempts in the past to get bail to be able to contest state Assembly and Lok Sabha elections.

Justice for Seema - dawn after the dusk

Justice for Seema - She will come out of the jail

Crime Patrol - Episode 130 - 14th July 2012

Crime Patrol: Abduction story of best friend's girlfriend (Episode 129 - 13th July 2012)

Inside Stroy
AHMEDABAD: This intriguing tale of friendship which involved the staged abduction of the best pal's girlfriend may not have been explored yet by Bollywood. But it has happened in real life. Not only did a man help his friend elope, but he ran away with the girl and put her up in a hotel to shield the real boyfriend from suspicion! The dramatic bluff - spurred by love and friendship - was busted by Gandhinagar police officials.

According to Mansa police officials, Riddhi Patel (18) a resident of Heerawadi in Bapunagar, was reported missing by her father, Rajesh Patel, on Friday. "Patel got a call from a man who identified himself as Amjad Khan Pathan," said a Mansa police official. "He told Patel that he was holding his daughter captive and wanted Rs 5 lakh to release her. Patel did not believe him as Riddhi had been to her maternal uncle's residence at Ajol village near Mansa. He called her uncle who confirmed that Riddhi had not been back."

Patel then filed a complaint with Gandhinagar police. Usha Rada, deputy superintendent of police, Kalol division, told TOI that the case was taken on a priority basis by investigators. Five teams, including one from Ahmedabad crime branch, were formed for the search.

"The teams worked day and night and secured conclusive proof from technical surveillance that she was with someone," Rada said. "We kept watch on a bus coming from Patan to Ambikanagar and nabbed Ajay Mali, a youth from Bapunagar, who was accompanying Riddhi."

Riddhi was unaware of her own abduction. Investigators said that the plot was hatched by Riddhi's lover Jagdish Yadav, 25, a resident of Heerawadi. Yadav lives across Riddhi's house and the two fell in love. However, Riddhi's father vehemently opposed the union and asked her to keep away from Yadav. Meanwhile, Yadav's wedding was fixed for May.

"Yadav met Riddhi in private and urged her to elope with him. Riddhi refused initially but agreed later to the scheme," said BN Dave, inspector of Mansa police station. "Yadav however feared that if he and Riddhi go missing at the same time, police might get suspicious. So Yadav entrusted his friend Ajay with the responsibility of creating a ruse. Ajay went to Mansa on his bike and picked up Riddhi as agreed and went to Nadiad on Friday afternoon from Ajol."

Yadav called Riddhi's father and demanded Rs 5 lakh as he planned to elope with Riddhi with the money. However, before his plans materialized, the duo was caught by police, and on Saturday afternoon he too was apprehended. Investigators said that while Yadav does not have any stable job, Mali works with a private firm in Ahmedabad.

Crime Patrol: Munnabhai MBBS caught after 6 years (Episode 128 on 8th July 2012)

Crime Patrol : Dr. Siraj Jaffer Secretly Steals His Colleague's Medical Certificate - Episode 128 - 8th July 2012

Dr. Varun who just completed his internship from Mumbai City Hospital under the guidance of Dr. Siraj Jaffer visits Nasik to meet his colleague whose full name is Dr. Siraj Rafiq Moinuddin Jaffer later, he informs Dr. Siraj that the person who claims to be Doctor in Mumbai City Hospital is known by his nick name Maqbool in the Hospital and also expresses his doubt that Maqbool's Medical certificate is fake and he is trying to fool patients and Doctors from since past 6 years. A medical drop out was practicing his Doctor in a reputed Hospital later, before going to the police Dr. Siraj tries to collect more information about Maqbool thus he files a police complaint against Maqbool and he gets arrested. Why did Maqbool steal his colleague's Medical certificate?

The Inside Story

A day after Mumbai Mirror reported the arrest of a fake doctor at Bombay Hospital, its medical director, Dr D P Vyas, admitted there was no system in place to verify credentials of candidates applying for a junior doctor’s post.

On Thursday, this newspaper reported the case of Mohammed Zuber Qureshi who worked at the hospital for six years by masquerading as his collegemate, Dr Meraj Danish Mohammed Hussain Shaikh.

The real Dr Meraj Shaikh (upper one); and Zuber Qureshi, his former classmate who had stolen his documents and identity

Dr Vyas said the system to seek references to cross-check a candidate’s credentials existed only for post-graduate doctors and consultants.

Zuber exploited this loophole in the recruitment process. He allegedly submitted certified copies of genuine documents of his Dr Meraj from Nagpur.

He, however, said the hospital now plans to introduce mandatory reference checks even for junior medicos. Caught on the backfoot, the hospital on Thursday got into damage control mode. It said Zuber, whose services have now been terminated, had never been assigned any important responsibility, and that he merely executed orders of consultants under whom he worked.

Zuber was one of the 200-odd junior doctors who are directly supervised by consultants of the department concerned. Hospital authorities said he worked in the Cardio Thoracic department and that his superiors never had any complaint against him. A statement issued by the hospital said: “He was in no way directly involved in treatment of patients, and could not take any decision on his own.”

Dr Vyas said that the hospital relies on documents provided by a candidate, and on the registration of the Maharashtra Medical Council.

The hospital statement added: “The original certificates presented by Zuber very much reliable and certified by the university, and it was not possible to identify the cheating since the person presented the same in such a way.”

Crime Patrol: Triple murder comes to light on TV show (Episode 126, 127 on 7-8 Jun 2012)

The inside story
A startling revelation in a TV reality show by a 17-and-a-half-year-old girl that her father had murdered and buried three persons in the backyard of her house in Villupuram was found to be true when a police team on Tuesday exhumed skeletons from their premises.

“It all began when Bhargavi, daughter of Murugan, told in front of her parents at the reality show ‘Solvathellam Unmai’ on Zee Tamil channel, that her father had murdered three persons,” said S. George, additional director general of police, law and order.

“Now, we are on the lookout for Murugan and his wife Rajeswari,” he said. The girl had approached the TV channel seeking help to marry her lover.

She said Murugan poisoned and murdered a 20-year-old woman, her 22-year-old husband and the girl’s father before burying them in the backyard of their house at M. Kuchipalayam, 5 km from Villupuram town. She claimed that the incident happened sometime in 2008.

Angry with her parents as they objected her love affair, Bhargavi also alleged that her father had tried to sexually assault her. She is now staying with her lover’s parents.

The police now believe that Murugan and Rajeswari murdered Lavanya, her husband Silambarasan and her father Sekhar for the gold jewellery and cash they were carrying. Silambarasan was working at the furniture shop run by Murugan.

Sekhar, hailing from Murugan’s village, had come seeking shelter for the newly-married Lavanya and Silambarasan.

“It looks like Silambarasan’s family was against the marriage,” the police said.
The episode was filmed on May 18 and telecast on May 28. The police had also received a complaint from Lavanya’s mother Jeeva Sekhar, who was shocked by Bhargavi’s disclosure on TV.
According to Villupuram DIG K. Shanmughavel, only after forensic examination, including DNA test, the identity of the dead people can be confirmed.
