Crime Patrol: Two daredevils turn daily wagers (Episode 160 on 28th Sep 2012)

PART 1

PART 2

The Inside Story
It was the start of a seemingly normal working day on May 10, 2004. Two unknown men entered the campus of a local school in Assam's Kamrup district, fired on a teacher at point blank range and fled.

Teachers and students of the school chased the miscreants – who were later identified as ULFA members – but the pistols in their hands (and also a potential grenade threat) soon scared them off. However, Ratul Chandra Rabha and Rituparna Boro, then students of Class VIII and X respectively, were not that easily scared. They chased the militants for almost three kilometers and eventually helped nab one of the men who had killed their teacher.

Recalling the incident the duo told TSI, “We could not tolerate somebody shooting our beloved teacher. So, we ran behind the extremists and managed to nab one of them. Later, we were informed that we had been selected for the National Bravery Award. We were both very happy.”

Sadly, even though both kids received the highest national honour for their courageous act and were swamped by media and press interviews for months after, they were just as quickly forgotten. Barely a few years after receiving the bravery award, both children had to give up on their education because of the weak financial backgrounds of their respective families.

Today, both Ratul (20) and Rituparna (22) are daily wage earners barely making ends meet. Ratul in fact feels that the awards and certificates are of “no value” to him now because his life condition remains as miserable as ever. Not that Ratul did not give it a fair try. He joined several recruitment rallies of the Indian Army, but was not selected despite showing his bravery award credentials. As a result, he is forced to work on daily wages at a sand bank near his house. He makes barely Rs 120 per day to sustain his family of six. “After receiving the bravery award I thought that I will at least get a government job. But my dream has not come true,” Ratul told TSI.

Rituparna is also not happy with the way his life has turned out. Although proud of having met President Kalam and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, his life as daily wage earner and the dilapidated mud hut he calls home, seems to have taken the sheen out of his once heroic life. “I had hoped that after getting the award I will get a job in the Indian Army or the state police department. I have even appealed to the Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi and other politicians for help. Every body has given me assurance only. But nobody has been able to give me a government job,” he grumbles, shaking his head morosely.

Highlighting the family's economic situation, Rituparna's aging father Bijoy Boro wishes that the state had helped his son get a decent government job. "We hardly earn Rs 2000-3000 per month with our daily efforts and have been living hand to mouth for years now,” he shares with TSI.

Today, Ratul and Rituparna continue to live in the hope that their appeal for help reaches the right ears. Bravery like hope can sometimes be eternal.

Crime Patrol: Diamond thief walks into web honeytrap (Episode 159 on 24 Sep 2012)

MUMBAI: Even conmen have their weaknesses and can be outsmarted.

A 24-year-old youth with an active web life walked right into a honeytrap, days after he allegedly stole diamonds worth Rs 6 lakh from his employer, and got arrested recently for forgery, theft and cheating. Karan Patel, the accused, was remanded in police custody till June 15.

The D B Marg police said Satish Shah, who runs a jewellery shop in the Lamington Road area, filed a complaint against Patel last month.

In the complaint, Shah said Patel had been working for him as a diamond sorter for the past four months. The youth had been able to win Shah's confidence. "In the first week of May, Shah gave him some diamonds for sorting. Patel promptly took the diamonds and, on the pretext of going to the restroom, disappeared," said inspector P G Sanas. Shah waited for nearly five hours before lodging the police complaint. He tried to call up Patel on his cellphone but it was switched off.

During the probe, it was revealed that the address provided by Patel (in Bhuleshwar) was a fake one. "Personnel from the D B Marg police went to the rented house where Patel supposedly stayed, but it turned out to be a fake address. They then learnt that the accused was staying in another house nearby. However, he had left by the team the police reached the spot," said deputy commissioner of police (Zone II) Anil Kumbhare. "Shah then told us that Patel was quite active on Facebook," he added.

The police then came up with a simple yet effective plan. They created a false profile of a good-looking girl and sent a invite to Patel, hoping that he would fall for the honeytrap. "The accused immediately accepted it and even sent her a chat invite. But we decided to proceed carefully. Using the girl's profile, I continued chatting with him for a few more days. We even exchanged cellphone numbers," said Sanas.

On Saturday, Patel was asked to meet the girl at a restaurant in Opera House. The cops even arranged for a woman constable in mufti. Patel was trapped and arrested the moment he got close to her. The police said they were yet to recover the diamonds from Patel.

Crime Patrol: Man kills brother-in-law as revenge for sister's suicide (Episode 158, 22 Sep 2012)

Driven by an oath taken just before his sister’s body was cremated on August 15 last year, a man murdered his brother-in-law and sister’s mother-in-law with a cut throat razor because his family and he believed that they were responsible for his sibling committing suicide.

Shashikant Prabhar Palve (20) slit the victims’ throats at around 10 pm on Wednesday night in Ganesh colony, Kajupada, Dahisar (E) and was arrested shortly after the crime.

Gyaneshwar Pandurang Kakad (32) had married Sunita (25) in 2005 and the couple had two children. According to the police, Gyaneshwar was an alcoholic and his mother Laxmibai Pandurang Kakad (65) allegedly physically abused Sunita over petty issues.

Sunita was found hanging from the ceiling fan at her home on August 12 last year, a day before Raksha Bandhan, at Sinnar village in Nashik. A day after Sunita’s death, the Nashik police had arrested Ghyaneshwar and Laxmibai for abetment of suicide and they were released on bail after being incarcerated in Nashik Central Jail for three months.

The police claim that Sunita’s family was enraged that the duo had been released after serving a mere three months, as they suspected that her in-laws had murdered her and made it appear like a suicide.

Shashikant confessed to the murders and told the police during interrogation that he had sworn on the body of his deceased sister, just before she was cremated on August 15, that he would avenge her death same time next year.

Gautam Randive, police inspector of Dahisar police station, said, “When we reached the spot, we had no clue who was responsible. But when we checked the victim’s background, we discovered that his wife Sunita had committed suicide under mysterious circumstances last year. We detained Shashikant for further investigation after picking him up from Shanti Nagar. He confessed to the crime during interrogation.”

Detection officer Satish Walkar said that after slitting the victims’ throats, Shashikant changed into fresh clothing at a public toilet and threw the murder weapon and clothes in the garbage to destroy evidence.

“We have now recovered these items. Sunita died last year a day before Raksha Bandhan, and her brother committed the murders this year after Raksha Bandhan,” Walkar said. Ghyaneshwar’s brother Baban Kakad alleges that the accused had threatened to kill his brother and mother while they were all at the hospital the day Sunita died.

“In the hospital he said that since they had killed his sister, he would one day kill them both,” said Baban. Shashikant was arrested under Section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code. He was produced at Borivali court and remanded in police custody till August 22.

The couple’s two orphaned children are currently staying with their maternal uncle.

Crime Patrol: Fight with classmate, not leopard, killed 19-year-old (Episode 157 on 21 Sep 2012)

Fight with classmate, not leopard, killed 19-year-old
Chetan Khankar confessed to the murder during interrogation
Mumbai: A 19-year-old student of Kohinoor Technical Institute, Borivli branch, was arrested on Friday for murdering his classmate, Sanjesh Janu Borle, who had allegedly threatened the accused of uploading his semi-nude pictures on a social networking site. The arrested accused has been identified as 19-year-old Chetan Prakash Khankar.

On November 1, 2011, the Kasturba Marg police officials had recovered Sanjesh's decomposed body from near Gavdevi temple area in Sanjay Gandhi National Park after Pradeep Pandya, a local, alerted them. Initially, the officials had suspected that the deceased had been killed by a leopard and shut the case. But before they did so, the officials had circulated Sanjesh's cellphone's IMEI number, which they had retrieved from his existing service provider, to several service providers asking them to inform the police the moment his phone was switched on. Sanjesh, 19, was a resident of Gandhi Nagar in Borivli (West). Luck favoured the police, and last week, one of the service providers intimated the officials about the cellphone's location. Based on this information, the police officials traced the phone.

Inspector Bhai Keshav Mahadeshwar of Kasturba Marg police station said, "When we traced Chetan's friend via his cellphone's location, he told us that he had found the handset in the national park. We then asked him to take us to the spot where he had found it. He took us in the opposite direction from where Sanjesh's body was recovered. Suspecting that he was hiding something, we interrogated him, during which he said that Chetan had gifted him the handset. When we inquired with Chetan about the incident, we discovered that he too is a student of the same institute. We then interrogated the accused and he confessed to his crime." Chetan has been booked for murder under the relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Both, Chetan and Sanjesh, had enrolled for the mobile repairing course at the institute.

According to the police, a few months before his murder, Sanjesh had clicked Chetan's semi-nude pictures and had also shot a video of him doing sit-ups after he was punished by one of the professors. Sanjesh, who would often bully Chetan, had threatened him about posting his semi-nude photos on a social networking site. This would always lead to an altercation between the two. During one these fights, Sanjesh had slapped Chetan in front of his classmates. Unable to bare the mental torture and humiliation, Chetan hatched a plot to kill Sanjesh.

"Chetan was aware that Sanjesh was a regular visitor at the park. On the day of the murder, Chetan followed the deceased inside the park and on finding an opportunity attacked Sanjesh. Once Sanjesh lost consciousness, the accused smashed his head with a stone. He then took his cellphone and threw away the SIM card," revealed an officer from Kasturba Marg police station. The officials added that following media reports on the incident, which stated that the police had only registered an Accidental Death Report (ADR) in the case and were suspecting it to be an incident of leopard attack, Chetan was relieved to hear the news and gifted the handset to his friend.

Crime Patrol: Friends kidnap, murder 20-yr-old (Episode 156 on 16 Sep 2012)

loan and lure of money Arrested while trying to collect ransom, lead police to body

A 20-year-old student of Thakur College in Kandivali was allegedly lured from his Mira Road residence and murdered at Naigaon by two of his friends on Monday morning in a case that bears similarities to the Adnan Patrwala murder in August 2007 (see box).

A few hours after the murder, Kalpesh Saroj (25) and Ravindra Kumar Yadav (25) — vegetable vendors from Boisar — allegedly called up the victim’s father and demanded Rs 8 lakh. They were arrested from Kandivali on Tuesday night when they went to collect the ransom. On Wednesday morning, the duo led the police to Ganesh Ramchandra Shriram’s body, which had been dumped near the Naigaon creek.

Shriram — whose father is a civil contractor at the Tarapur Atomic Power Station — was a second-year B Com student of Thakur College of Science and Commerce in Kandivali (East).

His parents and a younger sibling live at Jyotikunj building in Boisar. Police said since Shriram found it difficult to travel to college from Boisar daily, he had on weekdays started living alone at a flat in Mira Road his father bought.

The police said Shriram’s father Ramchandra was aware that his son had been spending time with the duo. In their statements, the two accused said they knew that Shriram was from a reasonably well-off family and his father had purchased a flat in Mira Road. Saroj allegedly told the police that he had borrowed Rs 1 lakh from Shiram’s father a month ago, which he was unable to return.

Additional Superintendent of Police (Vasai) Sangramsinh Nishandar said to make quick money and return the loan, Saroj decided to kidnap and kill Shriram and roped in Yadav.

On Monday, the two accused allegedly called up Shriram and told him that they had some work in Mira Road and would meet him in the evening. The three met near Shriram’s house, following which the two accused allegedly talked him into going to Boisar with them. They set out for Virar, where they were supposed to switch trains. However, instead of Virar, they got off at Naigaon, where the two accused allegedly killed Shriram and disposed of his body near the Naigaon creek.

A few hours after the murder, Saroj allegedly called up Ramchandra and told him that his son had been kidnapped and demanded Rs 8 lakh for his release. A shocked Ramchandra negotiated with the kidnapper and a deal was struck at Rs 3 lakh.

On Monday night, Ramchandra registered a complaint with the Kashimira police against Saroj. The police formed a 15-member team and tried to track him down at his house and shop.

Nishandar said they tapped Ramchandra’s phone to locate the caller. “To drop off the cash, Saroj called Ramchandra to Bandra but changed the location to Andheri and then Borivali. During one call, he even demanded that the money be thrown from a train near Kandivali,” said Nishandar.

“We followed the directions and finally on Tuesday night, when Ramchandra was told by the duo to hand over the money near the Kandivali rail bridge, we laid a trap and arrested them,” he said.

During questioning, the duo allegedly confessed that they had murdered Shriram fearing he would reveal their identity to the police. “We have arrested the accused under Sections 302 (murder) and 364 A (kidnapping for ransom) of the Indian Penal Code,” said Nishandar.

“At 3.30 am on Wednesday, the accused led us to the spot at the Naigaon creek and we recovered the body that was hidden in the mangrove bushes,” said Inspector Anil Patil from Kashimira police station. The accused were produced before the Thane Sessions Court on Wednesday and they were remanded in police custody till August 19.

Crime Patrol: Man murders father for abusing mother (Episode 154 on 14 Sep 2012)

The Inside Story
New Delhi: July 25, 2012 Unable to see his mother being abused by his smack-addicted father, a 24-year-old man allegedly murdered him with a meat chopper.

Danish, along with his mother Naima, was arrested early on Wednesday on the charge of murdering his 50-year-old father at their residence in Nizamuddin in south Delhi. Naima was accused of trying to conceal her son's crime.

The man, whose name was not revealed, was found dead with a deep cut injury on his neck on Tuesday evening at his residence and police said the scene of the crime was "disturbed as the floor was swept using a wiper."

On suspicion, police interrogated Naima who tried to deviate their attention by accusing her brother-in-law Zahiruddin for murdering her husband over property dispute.

She said she saw her husband's body after she came from Jama Masjid at around 5.30 pm. Police suspected the involvement her son Danish because his phone was switched off.

Police arrested Danish, while he was trying to flee Delhi, and he confessed that he murdered his father, who was a smack addict for the last 20 years.

"His father used to abuse and hit his mother almost every day since his childhood and would also be suspicious of moral character of his mother," a senior police official said. The immediate spark for the murder was his father's refusal to go for treatment and beating up his mother yesterday.

"He took a meat chopper and cut the throat of his father and also inflicted sharp injuries on the back of the body. In the meantime his mother came back along with his sister. His mother asked him to leave from there immediately and told him that she will clean up the spot and will make an alibi to save him," the official said.

Crime Patrol: Baby girl lies unwanted as two families battle over a new-born boy; court steps in (Episode 152, 153 on 8th-9th Sep 2012)

The Inside Story
Jodhpur: The Rajasthan High Court has taken suo moto cognizance of the shocking case of a baby girl who has been abandoned in Jodhpur's Umaid Hospital. The court has termed this a ''serious incident'' and a terrible example of gender bias. It has also has ordered the Chief Judicial Magistrate of Jodhpur to ensure adequate protection for the girl child.

The eight-day-old baby lies in the nursery for new-borns. Her biological mother, who is in the women's general ward does not see her, or feed her. She remains un-named. She was born a healthy baby. Her shortcoming is that she is not a boy.

When Poonam Kanwar delivered her child at Jodhpur's Umaid Hospital, mid-wives reportedly eager for a tip said, she had given birth to a son. They brought her a baby boy to hold in her arms, and collected their reward. Then the news was broken two hours later to Poonam and her family that the boy they had embraced was actually born to another woman in the same hospital. Now, Poonam says she wants a DNA test to confirm who the baby boy belongs to. That could take four weeks, say authorities. On the basis of a blood test, hospital authorities claim Poonam is the baby girl's mother.

Seven-day-old baby girl left abandoned in hospital in Haryana

Poonam already has a son. Like Reshma Devi, the boy's biological mother, she comes from a rather modest family of farmers in Barmer district. Reshma Devi has already left the hospital with her son and is taking full care of him.

"It's the fault of the hospital staff which has caused all this confusion," says Poonam Devi's husband, Chain Singh.

Doctors say that they cannot allow the abandoned girl to be fed by Poonam Devi till she accepts this is her child - the family says they will not allow this till they get the results of the DNA test.

The court has sought a progress report from the CJM on April 20 and has appointed advocate Raj Lakshmi Choudhary as the girl's amicus curie.

Given the insensitivity and negligence of hospital staff, the Rajasthan Women's Commission has intervened. "This case smacks of a feudal mindset that discriminates against the girl child. Also it's the negligence of the hospital staff that has created this confusion and caused so much suffering to this little girl. Our Commission is entitled to issue notices in such cases to seek action against the guilty and we shall definitely do the same''," said Dr Lad Kumari Jain, Chairperson, Rajasthan Women's Commission.
