The Inside Story
New Delhi, Tue Jul 24 2012
“just before Holy Ramzan- a gift from Alah” -Alam says.
For Akhtar Alam and family, this year’s Ramzan is going to be an extra-special one. All thanks to the Delhi Police and the residents of a remote village in Uttar Pradesh.
Alam’s five-year-old daughter who went missing two years ago, was finally reunited with her family recently.
According to police, Jamila Khatoon (29), who works as a domestic help in Malviya Nagar, had approached them in September 2010 to lodge a report about her daughter who had gone missing while she was playing outside her house.
Last Tuesday, Ubaidur Rehman, a Malviya Nagar resident, approached the beat constable of Malviya Nagar with a photograph of a minor girl stored in his cellphone.
Rehman told the constable that his father — a sarpanch of Zahidpur village in Bhadoi, UP — had given him the photograph after the girl was found at a market in Bhadoi.
“When the girl was found, she told the villagers her mother’s name and also that she was a resident of Khirkee. Rehman’s father clicked her photograph and sent it to his son in Delhi. Rehman’s father asked him to approach the local police in Khirkee Extension to help reunite the girl with her family. We checked the photograph of the missing girl with those on the police website. It matched that of the girl who was reported missing in 2010. the name of her mother, which the girl had given the villagers also matched the one we had on record,” a police officer said.
Police then traced the girl’s parents even as a team went to Bhadoi village to find the girl. DCP (South) Chhaya Sharma said initial investigation revealed that the girl had been kidnapped by Rajender, a resident of Zahidpur village in Bhadoi.
“The accused had brought the girl to the village and was keeping her at his house. She was spotted by villagers crying in the market place. Investigations are on to nab Rajender and his associates,” Sharma said.
