The Inside Story

TCS employee's murder causes panic among Chennai women IT professionals

Save Tamils movement mostly consists of IT guys, organised a protest on Monday in which around 500 IT professionals participated.

Uma Maheswari, 23-year-old software professional from the Salem city was working with Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) in SIPCOT park at Siruseri near Chennai. She had not returned to her residence in Medavakkam where she was staying with other girls. The next day Uma Maheshwari's father lodged a complaint in the local police station. 9 days later her body was found amidst a bush some 200 metres away from TCS, the company she was working with.

The state government had ordered for CB-CID enquiry. The local police had handed over the case to CB-CID.

From Monday morning CB-CID policemen were searching for evidences in the area where she her body was found. Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) for surveillance is being used in the area to trace any evidence. The police cannot rule out sexual violence in the case, even the motive behind the murder cannot be confirmed.

As the body was decomposed it was difficult to identify the symptoms for rape or sexual violence before she was stabbed to death and hence samples from the body have been sent for a laboratory test for confirmation, sources said. A cash reward of Rs 2 lakh was announced for any useful information which can help for further investigation.

While talking to Inda Today Online, one of the women IT professionals from reputed software company in Siruseri told "Our company provides cab facility after 8 pm. If something happens like this, we all get an alert email from HR that women should be careful and should not go in night. But during deadlines there is no other go for us except working for long hours and go in midnight."

Some women techies say, "We are staying nearby the company in a residential area. For this small distance, we cannot ask for a cab and we go by two wheeler alone. But the area is dark which creates fear. Without street lights, this fear has increased after the murder".Women are accompanied with somebody from their family or neighbour for the past two days after the news.

TCS is tight lipped over the issue after CB-CID inquiry order and they show hands towards Mumbai head quarters for any response.

Save Tamils movement mostly consists of IT guys, organised a protest on 24 February, on Monday in which around 500 IT professionals participated. At SIPCOT gate of Siruseri, the demonstration took place to urge the police and government to punish the culprits and to demand a secure space for women.

CHENNAI: A day after cracking the TCS employee murder case, police have nabbed the prime accused who was on the run. Uma Maheshwari, 23, was found dead on February 22, nine days after she went missing on her way from work in Siruseri.

A joint team of CB-CID and Kancheepuram police arrested Ujjal Mandal on Wednesday from a train near Kolkata. He will soon be brought to the city. On Tuesday, police had shown the arrest of two other accused, Uttam Mandal, 24, and Ram Mandal, 21, of Malda district in West Bengal. Based on their confession, police went in search of Ujjal Mandal.

Aware that he had boarded a train to Howrah, the police team flew to Kolkata along with a worker from Chennai to identify Mandal. The team got into the train at Kharagpur railway station and began scouring every compartment. Finally, the worker from Chennai identified the suspect.

CB-CID director general of police Narinder Pal Singh said the suspect had been produced before a local magistrate court in Kolkata and a transit warrant secured. "He will be brought here on Thursday."

A police officer said Ujjal was the prime accused. "He dragged Uma Maheswari into some bushes where the three men sexually assaulted her before stabbing her to death," he said.

In their confession, the accused said they were drinking when they saw Uma walking down the road and that they first intended to rob her.

Uttam Mandal, before his arrest, had tried to use Uma's credit card to withdraw cash at an ATM kiosk at Siruseri but failed as he didn't know the PIN, inspector general of police (CB-CID) Mahesh Kumar Agarwal said on Tuesday night. The accused later bought clothes at a textile shop with the credit card and their images were captured by a CCTV camera at the shop, he said.

UAV helped police get crucial clues

Using an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) was probably the smartest thing CB-CID did while investigating the murder of TCS employee Uma Maheswari. This gave them a clear picture of how the gang may have accosted and killed the woman before escaping.

Based on visual inputs, investigators moved in different directions from the crime scene and combed the area for clues. One policeman found entangled in a thorny bush a red thread which later turned out to be from the shirt of an accused. Another team reached an ATM from where they got a CCTV grab that proved that one of the culprits had tried to draw money using a credit card stolen from the girl.

"The red thread helped us confirm the presence of one of the accused when the rape and murder occurred. The footage of a person who was trying to use a card after masking his face with a handkerchief raised further suspicion. He was wearing a red shirt and his physique led us to the conclusion that he may have been a manual labourer," said a police officer.

This was the first time a UAV was used for crime investigation in the state. "The place of crime was full of bushes. There were vast stretches of open land which made it difficult from the ground to speculate which way the killers might have gone. But once we got a bird's eye view, thanks to the UAV, we got a better picture based on the clearings and the bushes," said an officer.

It was while tracing one of the probable escape routes that the investigating team found the red thread. Police started inquiring about workers hired for construction in the nearby area. The arrested three were found to have been employed as construction workers at a floor tile manufacturing firm. They were working on a new tower block and an annexure being built for TCS where Maheswari was working.

With inputs from workers and the method of deduction, they narrowed down on a handful of labourers in the area. Soon, the CCTV grab from an ATM helped identify one of the accused. It turned out that Uttham Mandal, one of the accused, rushed to an ATM hardly an hour after Maheswari was accosted. According to police, the woman was attacked around 10.20pm on February 13. The CCTV footage showed Uttham Mandal the the ATM at 11.26pm.

After interrogating the accused, police said Maheswari was listening to music on her phone using ear phones when the accused pounced on her. They stole her ear studs, mobile phone, credit card and some cash from her bag. Police personnel produced the arrested before a magistrate court in Chengalpet which remanded them in police custody till March 4.

Crime Patrol: Engineering Graduate Kills Her Grandmother (Episode 600 on 20 November, 2015)

The Inside Story

CHENNAI: Three days after a 76-year-old woman was said to have been murdered by a masked robber, police arrested the victim’s 21-year-old grand-daughter.

Police said the woman S Kanimozhi stabbed her grandmother with an hacksaw in a fit of rage for opposing her relationship with her boyfriend and chiding her for talking with him over phone in the late hours.

Kanimozhi had initially managed to convince the police and her father that the masked man entered their house at Porur at night and killed her grandmother Mangalam. But three days later, police said, the woman confessed to have killed her grandmother.

“Kanimozhi was in a relationship with a person since her college days. But her grandmother wanted to marry Kanimozhi off to a relative. This led to frequent quarrels between them.

On Thursday night, a similar quarrel broke out and Mangalam is said to have assaulted Kanimozhi,” said a police officer.

Kanimozhi’s father Subbaiah, the only other person residing in the house, was a nursing assistant.

“Kanimozhi was again talking over the phone with her boyfriend late in the night. Mangalam noticed this and chided her. In the fit of rage, Kanimozhi took an hacksaw and stabbed her grandmother twice in the stomach and chest,” said a police officer.

The elderly woman started bleeding and was writhing in pain for a few hours. The police said even a neighbour checked out on hearing cries. “But, Kanimozhi lied to him that her grandmother is unwell and that her father was on the way to take her to hospital,” said the officer.

When Subbaiah reached the house around 3 am on Friday, Kanimozhi told him that a masked man had broken in and stabbed Mangalam after locking her up in the bathroom. “Believing her, Subbaiah told us he suspected the role of a woman with whom he had an extra-marital relationship years ago. But investigations ruled that out. Later, Kanimozhi confessed to the crime and told that she cooked up the robbery story as an afterthought,” said the officer.

The 21-year-old woman had completed BE (ECE) graduation this May in a government college at Kumbakonam, where she was staying with her mother.

Kanimozhi has been remanded in judicial custody for 15 days by a Magistrate court and police have booked her on charges of murder.

Crime Patrol: Talking parrot ‘helps’ UP Police crack murder case (Episode 589 on 9th Nov, 2015)

The Inside Story
AGRA: In a case that seems straight out of an Agatha Christie potboiler, a parrot turned detective and helped nab its mistress' killer.

The question of who murdered Neelam Sharma, 45, and her pet dog, had been baffling the city police for almost a week till they got a clue provided by Hercule, the parrot.

Neelam, wife of Vijay Sharma, the editor of a Hindi daily, was found murdered at her residence on February 20. Her husband noticed a change in the behaviour of the parrot whenever his nephew Ashutosh visited their house after the murder.

"During discussions too, whenever Ashutosh's name was mentioned, the parrot would start screeching. This raised my suspicion and I informed the police," said Sharma.

SSP Agra, Shalabh Mathur, told TOI that Ashutosh confessed to the crime on being interrogated.

"We checked his call details and took him in custody. He accepted his crime and informed us that he was accompanied by an accomplice. They had entered the house with the intention of taking away cash and other valuables."

Afraid that his aunt might recognize him, he stabbed her as well as the dog when he started barking. But he hadn't accounted for the parrot who was watching silently.

Hercule the Parrot helps solve murder case

A parrot has helped Indian police solve its owner's murder.

Neelam Sharma, the wife of the editor of a Hindi daily newspaper, was killed in her home in Agra, 120 miles from New Delhi, together with her pet dog. The police had no initial leads on the murder, until the parrot, named Hercule, provided a key clue.

Vijay Sharma, Neelam’s husband, picked up on the fact that whenever his nephew visited, Hercule would start screeching. The parrot would even respond when the nephew’s name "Ashutosh" was mentioned in conversation. Sharma alerted the police to his suspicions, who interrogated the newly found suspect. Ashutosh confessed, telling the police he had entered the home with an accomplice in order to steal money and valuables and had been caught in the act by his aunt. Afraid that she would recognise him, he stabbed her to death. He also stabbed and killed her dog, which wouldn’t stop barking.

Unfortunately for him, he didn’t take the parrot into account. Hercule had kept his mouth wisely shut during the murder, only to open it later to reveal the truth.

Crime Patrol: Brides on sale, for cash and cattle (Episode 584 on 4th Nov, 2015)

The Inside Story

BHOPAL: Brides are being bought in Madhya Pradesh - sometimes in exchange for a buffalo and some cash. It might have sounded bizarre had there not been such a tragic tinge to it.

In districts like Ashoknagar and Guna, where men far outnumber women probably due to female foeticide, desperate grooms are turning to human traffickers to find a wife. It's no problem if they don't have deep pockets -- the 'matchmaker' kindly accepts a buffalo as part payment.

Traffickers providing brides, who are mostly 14-16 years old, are reportedly from an interstate gang, claim cops from Maharashtra who rescued three minor girls from Shadora village in Ashoknagar on February 20. One of the girls had been sold for Rs 50,000 and a buffalo, and another for Rs 35,000. The third girl was first sold for Rs 30,000, but she returned to the agent as the buyer was not treating her well. She was then re-sold in Shadora for Rs 35,000. All three are from Chandrapur district of Maharashtra.

SHO of Ram Nagar police station in Chandrapur district, Yogesh Pardi, who led the rescue team, said they were looking for two more minor girls in the case. He cited another case involving a bovine bride price. "Traffickers took a buffalo from a would-be groom of Shadora village who had only Rs 50,000 in cash, while the total fee was Rs 75,000," Pardi said. The buyers of the three girls would be arrested soon, he added.

The police, however, seem to be buffaloed by the problem of how to curb the crime. It's a difficult task, says Pardhi, as poverty prevents most of the victims and their families from filing complaints. "The girls are mostly from poor families and slum areas and the buyers keep them as wives. So the girls don't complain. There is a very dense network of these agents and there are at least two in every tehsil," claimed Pardi.

Sources said the presence of 'brides' from other states indicates a strong network of traffickers. But the MP police seem to be in denial. Ashoknagar SP Kumar Saurabh claimed that he has not received any complaint of trafficking in girls in the district so far. Station in-charge at Nai Sarai police station in Ashoknagar, RK Pacholi, acknowledged the presence of brides from other states, but saw nothing unusual in that: "A local resident Balvir married a girl from Odisha but as they had communication problems the girl wanted to return to her native place. A police team took her home. There are other Odisha girls also married to local people. I know about at least two living in Ishagarh village. But they have learned Hindi and are happy, so it's not a case of trafficking."

Crime Patrol: Out on morning walk, Delhi businessman shot dead (Episode 586, 587 on 6th, 7th Nov 2015)

Part 1

Part 2

The Inside Story

Out on morning walk, Delhi businessman shot dead

New Delhi: Jasbir Singh, a property dealer in Delhi, spelled out his name for the last time in his life to two bike-borne youth on Wednesday.

A prominent businessman of his locality in outer Delhi, 47-year-old Singh left home for his morning walk near Narela police lines when two unidentified people stopped him at a relatively secluded place and asked him his name.

The moment he introduced himself, the two assailants took out pistols and shot at him from close range. They fired more than ten rounds. Six bullets caught Singh in the chest while three pierced through his head.

He was rushed to a nearby hospital but succumbed to his wounds on the way.

"It seems like a case of personal rivalry. We have registered an FIR under section 302 of IPC in the Narela police station and have launched a manhunt," said Chhaya Sharma, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Outer Delhi).

However, relatives of Singh claim that his business rivals had ordered the shootout. "He was a very successful property dealer and his success bought him rivals. It seems like someone hired contract killers to kill Jasbir which is apparent by the way assailants went about their job," said Jaspal Singh, a relative of the deceased.

"This is a rare case, we have seen so many murder cases in the area but we haven't seen such desperate murderers. They left nothing to chance," said a police officer.

The police are also questioning some history sheeters of the area. The body of the deceased has been sent for post mortem.
