Scriptwriter murders aspiring actor as kidnap plan goes awry

AdTech AdUnable to sell his four creative scripts, the writer decided to kidnap a vulnerable aspiring actor for ransom, but ended up murdering him in cold blood.

The horrible kidnapping and murder of Sumit Tewari of Karawal Nagar in the Capital by the accused Shanti Deep Verma, an alumnus of Film and Television Institute of India, Pune is a gory tale of glamour, greed and deceit.

Tewari was deceived into performing a role in which he tied himself up and later informed that it was a plan to actually kidnap him for ransom. When he resisted, Verma strangulated him to death, packed his body in a briefcase and fled.

The police arrested Verma from his native place in Bahraich, Uttar Pradesh on March 2, where he had gone to meet his father. After executing the murder on February 21, Verma stayed in Kanpur, Varanasi, Allahabad and Lucknow to avoid getting caught.

His unsold scripts were titled as 'Love in Kasba', 'Sampark Kranti', 'Mohlat' and 'Pehchaan'.

Verma, a journalism and mass communication professional, befriended Tewari on Facebook in February and lured him with a role in an upcoming movie. Tewari, who was eager to bag the role, started visiting Verma at his Mandawali residence for rehearsals.

Sumit TewariSumit Tewari, the aspiring actor. The first two days - February 19 and 20 - went well and Tewari returned to his house, too happy about his upcoming project. However, on February 21, Verma showed Bollywood movie Phas Gaye Re Obama to Tewari, asking him to perform the scene wherein a character is tied up and gagged.

"Tewari, still unaware about Verma's plot, did it with ease. When he was tied up and gagged, Verma revealed his plan to kidnap him for ransom," said Dheeraj Kumar, additional deputy commissioner of police-I (north-east).

He informed Tewari that he would be left tied up for around three days till he got the ransom amount of Rs.2 lakh from his family.

Sensing that he had landed into big trouble, Tewari, a passout of Akash Institute of Marwah Studio in Noida, attempted to free himself. However, Verma climbed on Tewari's chest.

"He strangulated Tewari to death and packed the body in a briefcase," Kumar said. On February 21, Verma made a ransom call of Rs.2 lakh to Tewari's family.

The family members immediately informed the police. Tewari had told his family about the new assignment and also shared Verma's address. On February 22, Verma realised he could be caught anytime and thus locked his accommodation, leaving the body inside and fled.

"On February 23, the police broke the lock of Verma's residence, only to find the body in a briefcase. The body was shifted to GTB hospital and later handed over to the family," Kumar added.

During investigation, several raids were conducted at suspected hideouts and Verma was finally nabbed from Bahraich.
