The Gandhinagar police on Sunday rescued a 23-year-old woman hours after she was abducted from outside her office in the capital on Sunday afternoon.
The police said the woman, a native of Ranchi in Jharkhand, was abducted by four men, one of whom — identified as Dara Hardayal Singh — wanted to marry her.
They said Singh, who belongs to Madhya Pradesh, is a passout of IIT Mumbai and is based in that city. He had allegedly proposed to the woman for marriage on many occasions, which she had rejected.
Around 2 pm this afternoon, when the woman came out of her office along with a colleague, Singh and his three friends pulled her inside a Chevrolet Tavera and fled, police said.
Her colleague informed the police immediately and a team from the Sector 7
police station rushed to the spot. Soon, several teams of the Gandhinagar police were pressed into service and the abductors were
intercepted at Kheda after two hours. The four have been arrested.
Police said Singh had hired the car from MP to abduct the woman and take her to MP. They said the two knew each other from their college days and both were in touch with each other.
"Singh wanted to marry the girl for a long time, but she was not interested. She had complained to her father who had spoken to Singh's father but nothing helped. The girl's family did not file any complaint thinking he would not harm her. However, when she started avoiding his calls, he abducted her," said police inspector S S Gadhvi.
"We will record statements of the girl that would clarify what was the problem between them. The girl's parents are coming to Gandhinagar to give statements," he added.
