HALISAHAR: A 22-year-old IT employee was fatally shot by his bride's former lover minutes after 'sindur-daan' (applying of vermillion on the forehead) at Nabanagar near Haslisahar, around 65 km from Kolkata, on Saturday evening. Hundreds of wedding guests watched in horror as the groom collapsed in a pool of blood. They then took hold of the killer and beat him up till the police rescued him and took him to hospital, where he succumbed to injuries.

Souvik Dey, 22, and Sunita Sarkar, 20, were getting married after a year-long affair. Unknown to them, Rajib Bose, 28, with whom Sunita had been in a relationship earlier was hiding among the wedding guests. The bride and groom had just gone through the rituals when Rajib, his face covered in a muffler, took out a gun and shot Souvik. Souvik collapsed with a wound on his forehead. He was taken to Kalyani Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Hospital, but was declared brought dead.

According to local residents, Rajib lived in Kanchrapara and worked in a garments shop. He had an affair with Sunita, but she broke up with him early last year. Sunita then met Souvik, who worked in a Salt Lake Sector V IT firm. "It was love at first sight for both," said one of Sunita's relatives. "Their parents agreed to the match and fixed the wedding date," the relative said.

When Rajib heard of the wedding, he tried to dissuade Sunita and her parents several times, police sources said. "Last May, Rajib went to Sunita's home and threatened the family if she married Souvik. Later, he started stalking Sunita and harassing her whenever she stepped out of home. Sunita's father, Prangopal Sarkar, lodged a police complaint against Rajib, but withdrew it later after he promised not to disturb her further," said Pradyut Majumdar, Sunita's maternal uncle.

On Saturday, no one who knew Rajib spotted him among the guests. "It was around 10.40pm. The sindur-daan had just ended and the bride and groom were still sitting at the chhatnatala when Rajib stepped forward and fired at Souvik," said Animesh Chakraborty, a neighbour of the bride. Rajib was beaten for almost half an hour before a police team rescued him, said a witness.

The police said the murder was the fallout of a triangular love affair. "We have found out after preliminary investigation that Rajib had an affair with the girl and it was this that drove him to murder the groom. We are investigating the matter and have sent the bodies for autopsy," said Sanjay Singh, the commissioner of Barrackpore police.

Souvik's father Basudeb Dey, however, has lodged an FIR at Bijpur police station against Sunita and her parents for allegedly concealing the fact that she had an affair with another man. "We did not know that Sunita had an affair and she and her family concealed the matter. Because of this my brother has been killed. The family should be punished," said Souvik's sister Jayati Mitra.
