The Inside Story
2010 Dhaula Kuan Gangrape Case: Life Imprisonment for All Five Convicts

The five, convicted of gangraping a call-centre employee in 2010, have been sentenced to life imprisonment by Saket district court on Monday.

A trial court headed by additional sessions judge Virender Bhat had on 14 October convicted Shamshad alias Khutkan, Usman alias Kale, Shahid alias Chhota Billi, Iqbal alias Bada Billi and Kamruddin alias Mobile for gangraping the north-eastern woman, who was working at a BPO in New Delhi.

Back in 2010, the five convicts abducted the 30-year-old victim and raped her, taking turns, in the moving vehicle and abandoned her half an hour later on an isolated road near Dhaula Khan area.

The victim called her friend who was with her when she was forcibly picked up from near her house and told of her whereabouts. The victim's friend had already informed the police.

All the five accused were arrested within a month's time after the incident took place and were chargesheeted in February 2011. The final hearing began only in June 2014 after the court framed charges against the five in the abduction and gangrape case in August 2011

Following is the chronology of events in the sensational 2010 Dhaula Kuan gangrape case in which a Delhi court on Monday awarded life imprisonment to all the five convicts:

Dhaula Kuan gangrape victim still in trauma

NEW DELHI, Oct 16 – On the day that a Delhi court convicted all the five persons accused in the case, the 34-year-old victim of the Dhaula Kuan gangrape is still haunted by her horrifying ordeal of four years back.

The woman quit her BPO job and in 2011 went back to her home in Mizoram’s Aizawl, never to return to Delhi.

She is trying to pick up the pieces by starting a small business in her native village, said Kuki, one of her close friends.

“I informed her about the verdict and she said she was happy to know about it and is looking forward to the quantum of punishment they (the convicted persons) will be awarded,” Kuki said, adding that her friend had told her that she wants them to “get the severest punishment they deserve”.

“I wish they never get to touch a woman in their lives again”, Kuki quoted her friend as having said.

Kuki said that her friend, who has a daughter, is very much involved in church and community work.

The verdict also signals a triumph for Investigating Officer Rajkumari who had pursued the probe into the case.

“I am happy that the perpetrators have finally been brought to book. After the verdict was announced, I got a message from her saying ‘thanks’. I called her up and she was crying. She said she was happy with the verdict but added that she doesn’t want to speak to anybody,” said Rajkumari.

A Delhi court yesterday held all the five accused guilty in the 2010 Dhaula Kuan gangrape case, saying that the DNA report clearly demonstrates that the girl was raped by them.

The woman, who was a 30-year-old BPO executive then, was abducted while walking home at night with her friend after her shift had ended. After gangraping her, the five had abandoned her on the road in Dhaula Kuan of south Delhi.
