Crime Patrol: Ahmedabad woman out of coma after 11 months (Episode 11 on 3rd June 2011)

The Inside Story
AHMEDABAD: It can beat any Hollywood script. After being comatose for 11 months, a 23-year-old woman, Deepal Patel, 23, woke up to name people who had tried to kill her.

Until then her family and police thought that Deepal had fallen off her scooter and sustained grievous head injuries. However, when she regained her power of speech, she narrated a gruesome story of personal rivalry. KD Bhatt, inspector of Sola police station, said, "An attempt to murder complaint has been filed against her four assailants. We are now hunting for them."

"Her family members told us Deepal's brother Dha-rmendra had divorced his wife in 2010. The divorce had caused much ill-will between their families. It was Dha-rmendra's former in-laws who had targeted his sister to teach him a lesson," said a Sola police station official.

On February 24, 2010, Deepal was found lying near railway tracks in Chandlodia. Police said Deepal, a resident of Kalol, was an MBA student at a private university in the city. She was rushed to a private hospital where she slipped into coma. After several months of treatment, Deepal began responding to medications.

But, she still suffered from memory lapses and could not speak. After 11 months she regained her memory and ability to speak. "Deepal recounted her harrowing experience as to how she was pursued by a black SUV being driven by Udai Patel, a Kadi resident, on that fateful night. Her scooter broke down and she ran for her life. Her pursuers caught her and beat her till she fell unconscious," said Sola police.
