If you think women are not safe in the Capital only at night and on the streets,
think again.

A 16-year-old girl was allegedly abducted in broad daylight from Vikaspuri, kept
in confinement for more than 24 hours in a flat in Dwarka before being brutally
murdered when she resisted her abductor's apparent rape attempt.

The police arrested a man - Om Yadav, a property dealer who was a neighbour of
the deceased - on Friday night.

According to the police, he knew the victim and has admitted to the murder.

The girl, a resident of Uttam Nagar in west Delhi, was abducted on Thursday
while returning home from a private coaching institute in Janakpuri.

The victim was studying in Class XI at a government school in Uttam Nagar. She
wanted to be a doctor and was preparing for her medical exams.

Family members said she left home every day around 3pm to attend coaching
classes.

Elder brother Navneet Jha escorted her back home daily but on Thursday, she
called him to say that she would return on her own as her classes had got over
earlier, they added.

"My sister was preparing for her medical entrance exams. Navneet used to pick
her up every day at 7 in the evening but on Thursday she said her classes had
got over at 6pm and that she would return with her friends," Jaya Jha, the
victim's elder sister, said.

She, however, didn't return.

The police said when the girl did not return home on Thursday evening, Navneet
and Jaya informed their father, who is a havaldar in the army and is posted at
Subroto Park. The family informed the police on Thursday night following which a
search was launched for her.

"We spoke to the deceased's friends who accompanied her on her way home from the
coaching institute. They told us they dropped her at the traffic signal on the
Vikaspuri main road. My father along with the police went to several places to
find her on Friday morning. He has not returned since. He is at the
crematorium," Jaya said.

"The police took my father to the house in Dwarka where my sister was found
murdered. We don't know who murdered her and why," she added.

The girl's family had received two calls from a cellphone on Friday morning but
no one responded to those calls. " Based on the location of the calls and an
eyewitness who had seen the girl and the accused on Thursday morning, we zeroed
on Om Yadav," a police officer said.

Deputy commissioner of police (west) V. Renganathan said: " The victim and the
accused were neighbours and knew each other. She had gone with him on the day of
the incident. After reaching the flat in Dwarka, he refused to let her go. He
slit her throat with a dagger on Friday afternoon when he apparently tried to
rape her." She was kept in confinement and murdered inside a DDA Janta flat in
Dwarka's Sector 16.

During interrogation, the accused admitted to killing the girl when she resisted
his attempts to rape her. A police officer said: " We seized liquor bottles from
the flat. The accused had taken it on rent and would bring over girls there.

He confessed that he murdered her under the influence of alcohol. The dagger
used to kill the girl has been seized." Police sources said they have recovered
the girl's bag from the accused's flat.
