Crime Patrol: Unwed mother strangulates 7-day-old unwanted ‘love child’ (Episode 464 on 30th Jan 2015)

The Inside Story
Sahar police solve unique muder case, arrest three women – the mother, her aunt and grandmother

The Sahar Police on Sunday claimed to have solved the murder case of a seven-day-old girl executed with a unique modus operandi by arresting three women including the mother of the baby.

The case was solved with the help of a medical receipt which was found inside the plastic bag in which the baby's body was wrapped. The bag was provided by the medical store of a hospital in Sion.

The Sahar police said that three women – the baby's mother, aunt and grandmother killed the new-born and threw the body into the nullah in Sahar area, Andheri (E).

The accused have been identified as Bhagyashree Suresh Mandavkar (22) – the mother, Archana (20) – aunt and their mother Suchita (47) – the baby's grandmother. The trio live in Sakinaka's Chandivali area and all the three work as maids.

According to the police, the incident came to light after locals noticed the dead body of a new-born baby floating in the nullah at Ruby Koch Road near Sahar International Airport. They immediately informed the police. The police, with the help of fire brigade officers, recovered the body.

“The body was wrapped in a plastic bag. There was a handkerchief around the baby's neck and injury marks were found on her head and left eye. It appears that she was strangulated to death and later thrown in the nullah,” said Ravindra Patil, senior inspector at Sahar police station.

“During the panchnama, we found a medical bill of LMT College and Hospital Consumer Co-Operative Society Limited in the plastic bag. So we contacted to the owner of the medical store which is near Sion hospital and learnt that the prescription was referred to by a doctor at Sion hospital.”

While inquiring with the concerned doctor, the address of the accused was traced. However, when the police visited the place, they denied having any new-born delivery at their place.

“We clicked pictures of the three women and sent them to the doctor on his whatsapp who immediately confirmed that Bhagyashree had delivered the baby a few days ago at his hospital,” Patil said.

The women then confessed to the heinous crime.

Detection officer API Kaathe said, “The girl who delivered the baby is unmarried and had a physical relationship with her neighbhour, whose child she was bearing. On the day of the incident, she left Sion hospital along with her younger sister and mother, but her sister and mother left her at Chandivali and took an auto-rickshaw from there and killed the baby inside the running auto and threw her body into the nullah.”

The woman was admitted into the hospital for delivery with a fake name and bogus address, Kaathe informed.
