PART 2

The Inside Story
MUMBAI: Suspecting her maid of stealing a bracelet worth Rs 2.10 lakh among other valuables, a Charkop woman got her arrested. But she was shocked when the police, with the help of a bar girl, found that the real culprit was a relative.

As the innocent maid had been remanded in jail custody till December 1, the police on Saturday requested the court to release her.

Heena Gazi, who lives in Ekta Nagar with her businessman husband, had hired the maid two months ago. Heena told the police that when she started noticing cash and valuables missing from the house, she began keeping an eye on the maid as she didn't have evidence to accuse her.

On November 9, when the maid said she wanted to quit as she was getting better pay elsewhere, Heena assumed that she might have stolen a huge sum. On checking all her valuables, she found the bracelet missing from the cupboard.

The Gazis filed a case of theft and the Charkop police arrested the maid on November 13. She denied stealing anything from Gazis' flat, but after sustained interrogation, she reportedly admitted the crime to avoid torture. "But we did not recover any valuables from her," said a police officer.

Convinced that the maid was innocent, the police then decided to inquire with the building security guard and others. On learning from the guard that Heena's relative, Saddam Gazi, would often go to the flat when the family was not in, cops kept a watch on him and learnt that he frequented a ladies' bar in Kandivli . The police inquired with the bar employees and learnt that the last few days, Saddam had been showering a lot of money on a bar girl. When the bar girl told the police that she had recently seen an expensive bracelet on Saddam's wrist, they convinced her to help them nail him. "We picked Saddam for questioning and confronted him with the bar girl. He broke down and confessed to the crime," said Pradeep Raorane, assistant police inspector.
