Crime Patrol: Unwed mother strangulates 7-day-old unwanted ‘love child’ (Episode 464 on 30th Jan 2015)

The Inside Story
Sahar police solve unique muder case, arrest three women – the mother, her aunt and grandmother

The Sahar Police on Sunday claimed to have solved the murder case of a seven-day-old girl executed with a unique modus operandi by arresting three women including the mother of the baby.

The case was solved with the help of a medical receipt which was found inside the plastic bag in which the baby's body was wrapped. The bag was provided by the medical store of a hospital in Sion.

The Sahar police said that three women – the baby's mother, aunt and grandmother killed the new-born and threw the body into the nullah in Sahar area, Andheri (E).

The accused have been identified as Bhagyashree Suresh Mandavkar (22) – the mother, Archana (20) – aunt and their mother Suchita (47) – the baby's grandmother. The trio live in Sakinaka's Chandivali area and all the three work as maids.

According to the police, the incident came to light after locals noticed the dead body of a new-born baby floating in the nullah at Ruby Koch Road near Sahar International Airport. They immediately informed the police. The police, with the help of fire brigade officers, recovered the body.

“The body was wrapped in a plastic bag. There was a handkerchief around the baby's neck and injury marks were found on her head and left eye. It appears that she was strangulated to death and later thrown in the nullah,” said Ravindra Patil, senior inspector at Sahar police station.

“During the panchnama, we found a medical bill of LMT College and Hospital Consumer Co-Operative Society Limited in the plastic bag. So we contacted to the owner of the medical store which is near Sion hospital and learnt that the prescription was referred to by a doctor at Sion hospital.”

While inquiring with the concerned doctor, the address of the accused was traced. However, when the police visited the place, they denied having any new-born delivery at their place.

“We clicked pictures of the three women and sent them to the doctor on his whatsapp who immediately confirmed that Bhagyashree had delivered the baby a few days ago at his hospital,” Patil said.

The women then confessed to the heinous crime.

Detection officer API Kaathe said, “The girl who delivered the baby is unmarried and had a physical relationship with her neighbhour, whose child she was bearing. On the day of the incident, she left Sion hospital along with her younger sister and mother, but her sister and mother left her at Chandivali and took an auto-rickshaw from there and killed the baby inside the running auto and threw her body into the nullah.”

The woman was admitted into the hospital for delivery with a fake name and bogus address, Kaathe informed.

Crime Patrol: 17 year old abducted & sold for bride trafficking from Assam, rescued by law enforcement authorities in Haryana (Episode 462, 463 on 24th, 25th Jan 2015)

Part 1

Part 2

The Inside Story
Palwal, Haryana, 28thJune 2013: Nazneen (name changed) was shivering with fear and broke into tears as she hugged her Khaala (aunty). Unsteadiness in her walk and her cracking voice reflected what she had been through. From being an innocent young girl who felt free , strong and librated to the one being abducted, trafficked, raped, abused, threatened with death and finally being sold off to a ”prospective groom”, Nazneen has seen it all, within span of just over a month.

Acting on a complaint filed by Bachpan Bachao Andolan (BBA), local police and BBA activists rescued a minor girl Nazneen yesterday evening from Pigaud village in Palwal district. This 17 years old girl was abducted and trafficked by a gang of traffickers from Assam to be sold off as a bride in Haryana. Nazneen (name changed), whose mother passed away when she was just 13 years old and her father is bed ridden for years due to paralysis, was deceived into believing that once she goes to Delhi she will have a better life and can help her family out of poverty.

The traffickers did not allow her to discuss the matter with her family members and manipulated her to accompany them. To Nazneen’s horrors she was raped by Hovi, a trafficker when they were on their way out of Assam. The horrifying tale of rape and abuse continued when she was brought to Haryana.

She was sold to different men on multiple occasions and finally she ended up being with a man named Barkat, who bought her for 15,000 rupees. Barkat raped her and abused her for days and later married Nazneen to his younger brother Irkam. Nazneen’s marriage happened in very shady circumstance as neither any cleric nor witnesses were present at the time of the marriage and even her consent was not taken for the same.

Mr. Kailash Satyarthi, Founder BBA, said “This incident is the exact reflection of how this syndicate of trafficking works. Young girls who are most vulnerable are deceived and lured into this nexus of trafficking and their lives are ruined. BBA has received 107 such complains of missing girls from one district of Assam alone till May 2013. In past 15 days, this is the second case that has been tracked in Harayana, where young girls from different states are trafficked and sold.”

Somehow Nazneen managed to give her brother Samsul and aunty Samina a call. She cried for help and begged her brother to rescue her from this place. Samsul and Samina mobilized police officials to visit the palace where Nazneen was being kept captive. But the police official “co-operated” with the accused Barkat and his brother and allowed them take Nazneen again with them. Police official in Palwal said that that the crime happened in Assam, so Assam police should deal with it.

Mr. Kailash Satyarthi, Founder BBA, added “The nexus of trafficking is supported and abetted by some corrupt police officials. At times the approach of police is appalling. In one of the cases that BBA encountered, an investigating officer from Haryana Police had no Idea about the laws for protection of children against sexual crimes and trafficking.”

Nazneen (name changed), after being rescued was presented before Child Welfare Committee and investigation is under way to identify others involved in this syndicate of trafficking.

Crime Patrol: Killer arrested, was all set to escape to Bangladesh where his lover resided (Episode 459, 460 on 17th, 18th Jan 2015)

Part 1

Part 2

The Inside Story
A former cellphone technician, Arvind Gupta (23), was arrested by the Mumbai crime branch early on Thursday from Howrah station, West Bengal, for the brutal murder of Malad homemaker Shagufta Khan (37) and robbery. Investigators said Khan's older daughter, who saw Gupta emerge from her mother's bedroom after the killing, was at grave risk as the accused did not want to leave any evidence. But the teenager used her presence of mind and locked herself up in an adjacent bedroom. Her father told TOI she is traumatized and will be taken for counselling soon.

Gupta told sleuths the plot to kill Khan was hatched at his girlfriend's hometown in Bangladesh in early November. "In September, Gupta sneaked into Bangladesh from Howrah with the help of an agent and stayed there with his girlfriend for a month," said ACP Sunil Deshmukh. "Gupta wanted to marry her, but she often asked him how he would make ends meet without a job. He desperately wanted to make a lot of money in the shortest possible time and settle in Bangladesh," Deshmukh said.

Gupta returned to Mumbai on November 8 and resumed work at a mobile store in Goregaon. He often visited Khan's home in Rustomjee Riviera, Malad, to deliver handsets and accept payments. On November 11, he reached Khan's building at 3pm. In the next seven minutes, he took the elevator upstairs, killed Khan and stashed jewellery worth Rs 70 lakh and Rs 10,000 in cash into a bag. While leaving, he saw Khan's older daughter who returned from school with her sister. He panicked when she locked herself in a room and her sister ran down the stairs. He returned to the auto, wiping his hands on his clothes.

"Gupta changed his clothes at a friend's place and took a 7pm train to Kolkata the same day," said an official. In Kolkata, he hired an agent to re-enter Bangladesh. By this time, the crime branch was tipped off about his movements. A crime branch team flew to Kolkata and nabbed Gupta from Howrah station as he was to leave for Bangladesh. "The government's recent move, allowing investigators to go across the country without prior sanction, helped," said joint commissioner Sadanand Date.

"I wish Gupta would have asked me for the money, I would have gladly given him more," Khan's husband, Sonu Jalan, told TOI. Jalan, who runs an automobile business, was separated from his wife and lived in Kandivli but he met his daughters frequently.

Killer arrested, was all set to escape to Bangladesh where his lover resided

The accused, Arvind Gupta, had gone underground three months ago as per the murder plan. He considered the victim a 'soft target' and planned to rob her and settle down in Bangladesh.

Goregaon resident Arvind Gupta, accused of killing Malad homemaker Shagufta Khan on Monday, was arrested around 6 am Thursday from the Howrah Railway Station in West Bengal. Officers from the Mumbai Crime Branch's Unit 11, who arrested Gupta, 28, said that the accused had planned to escape to Bangladesh, where his girlfriend resided, with cash and valuables worth around 70 lakh that he robbed from Shagufta's house.

Killer 'disappeared' three months ago to plan murder

Gupta told police that his desperation to marry his girlfriend - an illegal immigrant from Bangladesh who resided in Kamathipura - had completely taken over his mind, and he thought of robbing Shagufta's house as he considered her a "soft target".

Gupta worked at a mobile phone store in Goregaon, and had visited Shagufta's house in Rustomjee Riviera Apartments near Orlem Church a few times to deliver mobile phones. Having made up his mind to rob the house, Gupta quit his job around three months ago, abandoned his family, and disappeared from the area.

A senior police officer said that he started living in Nalla Sopara, and had no contact with family comprising his parents (his father is an autorickshaw driver). "Gupta had an affair with a woman from Kamathipura and the two had decided to settle down in Bangladesh. He started residing in Nalla Sopara around three months ago," Assistant Commissioner of Police (Crime Branch) Sunil Deshmukh said.

"In October, he sent his girlfriend to Bangladesh, saying he would join her shortly. Gupta had known Shagufta for the past oneand-a-half years, and thought of her as a soft target," Deshmukh said. Cops are yet to ascertain whether a complaint about Gupta going missing was filed by his parents, police said, adding that they are certain that no-one besides the accused are involved.

The murder

Around 3 pm on Monday, Gupta entered the sixth-floor flat of Shagufta, 38. Her husband was on a business trip to Australia, and her two daughters were at school.

The accused had hired an autorickshaw, and asked the driver to wait for a few minutes. Shagufta appeared to have resisted Gupta's attempt to rob her, and she was stabbed on the neck and torso with a knife he found in the kitchen.

In the meantime, the victim daughters returned to find the front door ajar. Police sources said that the girls saw bloodstains on the floor and noticed that the door to their mother's bedroom was shut. The elder daughter asked her sister to rush out of the house and knocked on the bedroom door. Gupta, with knife in hand, tried to catch hold of her but ran to the other bedroom and locked herself in, police said.

Gupta went back to Shagufta's room and took away earrings, gemstones, chains, watches, diamond-studded gold jewellery and cash, and went out of the building around 3.11 pm, boarding the same autorickshaw.

The Crime Branch officers refused to reveal how they traced the accused. "He pretended to be speaking on the phone while entering the exiting the building. Nobody stopped him, even though he was wearing a bloodstained shirt as he exited. Once he got into the autorickshaw, he might have changed his clothes," Deshmukh said.

"Gupta boarded the Kolkata Mail the same night. Our officers arrested him while he was leaving the station to escape to Bangladesh," the officer said.

Crime Patrol: Metal rod in hip helps identify 62-year-old victim, trace killer (Episode 458, 459 on 16th, 17th Jan 2015)

PART 1

PART 2

The Inside Story
MUMBAI: When the post-mortem report of an elderly woman's charred body showed that a metal rod had been inserted in her during a hip replacement surgery, it not only helped the police identify the victim but also trace her killer.

On Wednesday, the Chunabhatti police arrested Wahid Shaikh (35) for allegedly murdering his landlord, Hafizabi Khaton, to usurp her house.

On November 16, a few youths found a woman's body on a ground at Qureshi Nagar in Kurla (E) near the railway tracks. They informed a businessman in the locality who called the police. The cops were stumped. As they could not identify the charred body, they didn't know where to look for the killer.

But then they got their first lead: The post-mortem report showed that the victim had undergone a hip replacement surgery a few years ago. "The investigating team got in touch with the company that provided the steel rod, and through the firm got details of the doctor who had conducted the surgery. The doctor identified the victim as Hafizabi Khaton and gave us her address. Sion hospital's Dr Rajesh Dhere provided us the lead in identifying the victim," DCP (zone VI) Sangramsinh Nishandar told TOI.

A team, led by inspectors Balasaheb Jadhav and A Galinde, and sub-inspector A Bagade, found that Khaton was a ragpicker who lived alone in Kurla (E). "She had rented her other house in Kurla to Shaikh and his two friends. On Wednesday, when we questioned Shaikh, he broke down and confessed to the murder," said Nishandar. Cops are alooking for his two aides.

Shaikh reportedly told the police that he and his friends wanted to buy the house where they had been living as tenants, but Khaton refused. Shaikh then allegedly decided to kill her and own the property. "Shaikh thought he would not get caught as she does not have family. On November 7, on the pretext of discussing the matter, Shaikh called her home, strangled her to death with the help of his two accomplices and set her body on fire to destroy evidence," said a police officer. They then dumped the body on the ground.

Crime Patrol: Charkop family gets maid arrested for theft, but probe finds relative was culprit (Episode 455, 456 on 9th, 10th January 2015)

PART 1

PART 2

The Inside Story
MUMBAI: Suspecting her maid of stealing a bracelet worth Rs 2.10 lakh among other valuables, a Charkop woman got her arrested. But she was shocked when the police, with the help of a bar girl, found that the real culprit was a relative.

As the innocent maid had been remanded in jail custody till December 1, the police on Saturday requested the court to release her.

Heena Gazi, who lives in Ekta Nagar with her businessman husband, had hired the maid two months ago. Heena told the police that when she started noticing cash and valuables missing from the house, she began keeping an eye on the maid as she didn't have evidence to accuse her.

On November 9, when the maid said she wanted to quit as she was getting better pay elsewhere, Heena assumed that she might have stolen a huge sum. On checking all her valuables, she found the bracelet missing from the cupboard.

The Gazis filed a case of theft and the Charkop police arrested the maid on November 13. She denied stealing anything from Gazis' flat, but after sustained interrogation, she reportedly admitted the crime to avoid torture. "But we did not recover any valuables from her," said a police officer.

Convinced that the maid was innocent, the police then decided to inquire with the building security guard and others. On learning from the guard that Heena's relative, Saddam Gazi, would often go to the flat when the family was not in, cops kept a watch on him and learnt that he frequented a ladies' bar in Kandivli . The police inquired with the bar employees and learnt that the last few days, Saddam had been showering a lot of money on a bar girl. When the bar girl told the police that she had recently seen an expensive bracelet on Saddam's wrist, they convinced her to help them nail him. "We picked Saddam for questioning and confronted him with the bar girl. He broke down and confessed to the crime," said Pradeep Raorane, assistant police inspector.
