Bhubaneswar: She was fond of books and spent most of her time studying. But her poor parents could not afford to buy basic stationery like pencils and notebooks. Her school opened on June 23, but despite her repeated requests, she could not get the money. She got so upset with the delay that she committed suicide. This 14-year-old Orissa girl Jayanti was promoted to class 7 recently. She was resident of Aska Town in Ganjam district.
According to sources, her poor parents were making efforts to arrange the money. Her father, a daily wage worker, has three other minor children. Recently he suffered a paralytic stroke and was mostly bedridden. Jayanti's mother somehow managed the house from whatever she earned as a domestic help.
On Wednesday, when her parents were away, she poured kerosene and set herself on fire, say media reports.
Jayanti sustained over 50 percent burn injuries. Neighbours immediately rushed her to a nearby hospital where she died.
