DEHRADUN: Udham Singh Nagar district police on Tuesday cracked the mystery behind the murder of three members of a family from Dehradun after they arrested the family's neighbour for the crime.

Sanjay Pant (22), a neighbour of the murdered family in Shyampur area of Prem Nagar in Dehradun, was arrested for the brutal triple murder, which had sent shock waves across Uttarakhand. The pistol used in the crime was recovered from his house in Dehradun on Tuesday morning.

The family, Rajendra Joshi (30), his mother Kamla (52) and son Bhaskar (8) had left their Shyampur residence of Dehradun on November 27 for Pithoragarh, in their car driven by Pant.

On November 28, the car was found abandoned in Bilaspur area of Rampur district in Uttar Pradesh. Bhaskar's body was found in phase 2 of SIDCUL in Udham Singh Nagar district on December 3. The bodies of Rajendra and his mother were found barely 300 metres away on December 7.

SSP Udham Singh Nagar, Keval Khurana told TOI, "During the probe we zeroed in on two persons - Sanjay Pant, an unmarried neighbour of the family, and Kamla's younger son Deepak, who is a defence personnel presently posted at Odisha." However, after the initial probe it was confirmed that Deepak had no role in the crime.

During investigation, the Udham Singh Nagar police found that Pant was not home on November 27 and had returned in the evening hours of the next day. After detailed questioning, Pant confessed that he had carried out the crime alone.

The accused informed the police that he had asked Rajendra to accompany him for a walk in the late night hours of November 27 in Sitarganj area and then shot him dead. Thereafter, he asked Kamla to get out of the car and shot her dead too. He took the minor to a location at a distance of about 300 metres and stabbed him to death.

"Pant told the police that he had an affair with Deepak's wife. He planned to eliminate the entire family to get married to the woman. After getting to know that Rajendra could not drive, he agreed to come along with the family to Pithoragarh to drive their vehicle. Pant also had plans to get rid of Deepak but was caught before he could do anything," said the SSP.

The pistol along with the jewelry Pant had snatched from Kamla were found from his residence.

It was also found that besides a house in Shyampur the family also owned a four bheega land in the area, with an estimated worth of Rs 5 crore.

"Pant was eyeing marriage as well as massive property through the crime," added Khurana.
