Part 1

Part 2

The Inside Story
Crime Patrol Blog

KANPUR: The main accused identified as Rashid alias Zakir, son of Hazari and his wife Shakeela alias Bitta were arrested in the triple murder case reported from a saddlery unit in Macchliwala Hata in Gwaltoli on March 6. A country-made firearm, several cartridges and a sharp-edged weapon were recovered from them. The arrests were made near inter-state Jhakarkati bus terminus when they were trying to escape, senior superintendent of police Yashasvi Yadav said.

Three persons, including a middle-aged woman, were found murdered in a saddlery unit at Macchliwala Hata in Gwaltoli on Wednesday last.

The Gwaltoli police identified the deceased as Riyaz (27), Ibrahim (30) and their mother Zainab (50), all residents of Bahraich district. The factory owner Mohammad Kamran found the three bodies lying at the first floor of his unit.

Police sources said all three had their throats slit open. They also had injuries on hands.

According to police, Rashid was found missing. In his statement to the police, Kamran had stated that unlike other days, the main entrance of the unit was found locked, when other workers reached there to work. "When the workers informed Kamran, he came there with another set of keys and opened the door. They saw the bodies lying in a pool of blood," an investigating officer said.

During further investigations, the cops also found a six-year-old boy Saddam from the unit. The investigators ascertained the boy's relationship with Zainab and found that she and her sons, including Saddam, had come to settle scores with her son-in-law Rashid, who was absconding with his second wife Shakeela.

Rashid, a resident of Fakharpur area of Bahraich had married Zainab's daughter Kalimun. After being convicted on charges of murdering her in 1997 by a local court, he was on the run.

Crime Patrol: Man kills 8-year-old daughter over homework (Episode 447 on 19th Dec 2014)

The Inside Story
BANGALORE: A furious man killed his eight-year-old daughter with a rolling pin because she didn't answer questions during homework.

The gruesome incident took place at Avalahalli, near Byatarayanapura, off Mysore Road, on Thursday night. Satyanarayan Singh, 43, a plastic utensils trader, told police that he was provoked into hitting his daughter Neha as she didn't answer questions during revision.

Satyanarayan and his mother Padma Bai have been arrested. Police suspect Padma Bai bore a grudge against Neha and abetted him in the act. A Class II student of SGS School, Mysore Road, Neha was Satyanarayan's daughter from his first wife, Asha Singh, who had committed suicide in 2006. Satyanarayan was acquitted in the dowry harassment and murder case of his wife. He married again and has a two-year-old daughter from his second wife. The family stayed in a rented house in II Cross, Avalahalli.

The incident took place when the rest of the household was watching TV, the family members told police.

On Thursday night, Neha was studying and Satyanarayan approached her and asked her a couple of questions from her homework. However, Neha could not answer and an angry Satyanarayan hit her. Later, he went out along with his mother, wife and younger daughter, leaving Neha alone at home.

On returning home, Satyanarayan saw Neha sleeping. He woke her up and asked her the questions again. But Neha could not answer. A furious Satyanarayan then dragged her into one of the rooms and began beating her using a rolling pin.

Satyanarayan allegedly hit the girl all over her body and clubbed her several times on the head. Neha died on the spot. All the while, his second wife and mother were busy watching television in the main hall, said police.

The commotion drew neighbours, who spotted the girl's body in the house. When asked, Satyanarayan claimed that Neha had gone out to a shop and came back with injuries. He said someone had beaten her up and that she collapsed and died on the spot.

Neighbours called the police, who found several holes in the man's claims. Police said the behaviour of the family members aroused suspicion.

Duggappa, assistant commissioner of police (Kengeri Gate), said Satyanarayan's criminal antecedents aroused their suspicion. "We took him to the Byatarayanapura police station and questioned him. He confessed to the murder," he said.

"From circumstantial evidence, it is clear he beat the kid to death and we have booked him on charges of murder," said D Rajappa, deputy commissioner of police (West).

Killer dad got girl home only 2 months ago

Relatives alleged that Satyanarayan Singh, 43, was a sadist who hated the sight of his 8-year-old daughter Neha, from his first wife. Satyanarayan is believed to have brought Neha from her grandparents' place in Shimoga only two months back.

Police said they are investigating whether Satyanarayan's murder of Neha was premeditated and not done in a fit of rage.

Served 6 months in jail

Satyanarayan, the police suspect, had enough reasons to be angry with Neha. He was accused of harassing his first wife, Asha, and abetting her suicide in 2006. Asha had ended her life soon after Neha was born.

Based on a complaint by Raghunath Singh, father of Asha, Satyanarayan was booked for dowry harassment. The court sent him to jail pending trial. He spent six months in jail as an undertrial till he was acquitted by the court.

During this time, Neha was with her maternal grandparents in Shimoga. Satyanarayan, meanwhile, married Teju Singh and has a two-year-old daughter from her But in May, he turned up in Shimoga to claim Neha's custody. The grandparents refused. "But he called for a panchayat and threatened to file a habeas corpus. They relented," said a relative.

Vendetta as motive?

According to this relative, Satyanarayan and his mother Padma Bhai wanted to avenge his jail term. "Raghunath had told Satyanarayan that he will take care of the girl well but Satyanarayan insisted on the custody claiming he would look after his daughter. But he had been torturing this girl," she said.

Satyanarayan enrolled Neha in a private English medium school in Bangalore. She had studied in a Kannada medium school in Shimoga.

Talking to TOI, Raghunath said he begged Satyanarayan not to take the child away. "He took everything that belonged to her," he said.

He hated his daughter

A cousin of Satyanarayan said he was a sadist and often hit the girl. "He hated her. We asked him to give us the child so that we could take care of her. But he never listened to us," he said.

Crime Patrol: Dismembered body found in U'khand identified (Episode 445, 446 on 13th, 14th Dec 2014)

PART 1

PART 2

The Inside Story
DEHRADUN/BAREILLY: The Bareilly-based family of 25-year-old Vijay Pal Gangwar, who had been working as a compounder in a private clinic, confirmed on Wednesday that the dismembered body found in Udham Singh Nagar of Uttarakhand was their son's. With this, police have managed to identify one of the two bodies found on September 8.

Two headless bodies of a man and woman were found near the Nagar Sagar Dam in Udham Singh Nagar, about 270 km from Dehradun. Both bodies were naked. The private parts of the male had been smashed. The hands and legs of both had been chopped off, and it appeared like an attempt had been made to burn the torsos. While the man's torso was packed in polythene and discarded near the dam, the woman's was recovered from hedges nearby.

The couple's clothes were recovered separately, in a bag thrown nearby. The hands and legs that had been chopped off were packed in a separate polythene bag. The next day, September 9, about four km from the dam, the heads of the man and woman were found. The woman's head had been tonsured.

Police are yet to identify the woman who was killed, but suspect that she might be Gangwar's lover Nisha Sharma, also a resident of Bareilly, a nurse who worked in the same hospital.

Gangwar's father Balakram had lodged a complaint with Prem Nagar police that his son was set to return to Bareilly on September 6, but had gone missing. Police said the family of Gangwar identified the good-luck charm on his wrist, and found familiar marks on the leg. His mobile phone had been unreachable since August 26.

Local people have said that both Gangwar and his lover were already married, and had children from their previous marriage. They had entered into a live-in relationship, and had earlier been employed in a private hospital at Izzat Nagar. Six months ago, after their hospital shut after suffering losses, the two shifted to Banwasa in Champawat district of Uttarakhand, to take up work in a hospital there.

Gangwar's family were informed by local people in Banwasa that the two had gone missing after engaging in an ugly face-off with the doctor who had employed them.

Bareilly (city) SP Rajeev Malhotra said, "The bodies were recovered in Uttarakhand, so the ball is now in the court of Uttarakhand police, who are probing all angles."

SSP Ridhim Aggarwal of Udham Singh Nagar said, "This appears like a well-planned crime. The initial probe has shown that the mobile phones of the two were switched off since August 26." The police official said it was unclear why, if the couple were last seen on September 5, their mobile phones had been switched off since August 26.

Aggarwal said Gangwar's wife had also arrived at the police station. "Despite being aware of his affair with Nisha, his wife stayed with her husband's parents, and had not separated from him," the SSP said, adding that no one had turned up from Nisha's family, although police had found out that she was a divorcee with a three-year-old daughter.

Crime Patrol: Thane man kills father who helped him blackmail girlfriend (Episode 444 on 12th Dec 2014)

The Inside Story
A 70-year-old retired insurance agent was killed by his 32-year old son in Thane on Monday after they had a heated argument over blackmailing a woman who was the son's girlfriend.

The son, who had taken nude pictures of his girlfriend and had already extorted Rs 1.5 lakh from her, had persuaded his father to telephone the girl to ask for Rs 2.5 lakh more. Police suspect the two later had a fierce altercation over this, leading to the son hitting the father on the head with a heavy object; the time of the incident was around 3 am.

After he was struck, Dattaram Salaskar left his residence in Runwal building in Thane, and decided to head out to his sister's place in Four Bungalows, Andheri. He hopped into ataxi and called up his brother-in-law Vishnu Parab to inform him about his arrival, telling him had happened.

In the taxi, Dattaram fell unconscious, and the alert taxi driver drove him straight to Andheri police station. From there the old man was taken to Cooper Hospital where doctors diagnosed severe injuries to his brain. At noon on Monday, Dattaram breathed his last.

While the Andheri cops were on the lookout for the son Shailesh, the Rabodi police had already arrested him after his girlfriend's family lodged a complaint about the extortion. A court had remanded him to police custody until May 9. The father, now dead, was also named an accused, as he too had played a role in demanding cash from the woman.

Assistant police inspector Vishwas Jatak of Rabodi police station said, "The woman and her family had complained about the extortion on Monday and we arrested the accused today (Tuesday). He refused to provide us his relative's telephone number and address, but instead gave us his dead father's telephone number. We were not aware about the father's death until we came to know about it from Andheri."

Jatak said the case of murder would be transferred to Rabodi police station from Andheri where the dead man's brother-in-law Parab had lodged a complaint. "We already have the accused in the extortion case and will produce him in the murder case too."

The son, who is unemployed, and used to have frequent quarrels with his father, has been charged previously in other cases too, said Pradeep Gosawi, senior inspector of Andheri police station. "My brother-in-law was always worried about his son's behaviour," said Parab, "but nobody thought he was actually kill his father."

Dattaram has an older son who has long distanced himself from the family, while his wife had passed away a year ago, said the police.

Crime Patrol: Lover poisons and hangs 17-year-old girl in Thane (Episode 441 on 5th Nov 2014)

The Inside Story
Lover poisons and hangs 17-year-old girl in Thane

A 25-year-old man was arrested on Friday for killing his 17-year-old paramour by spiking her cold drink with poison in the name of giving her an abortion pill and then hanging her from the ceiling fan to make it look like a suicide.

Shankar Kashinath Bhogade from Jahwar in Palghar, Thane (rural), is married. He developed a sexual relationship with the 11th standard student after his wife introduced her to him. When she conceived, the girl kept demanding for abortion pills or money to undergo an abortion.

On July 19, Bhogade called her to a hotel room, promising to give her abortion pills. After having sex with her, he offered her a cold drink. Within minutes, she began vomiting and collapsed. Bhogade hung her from the ceiling fan and projected her death as suicide, the police said.

"We initially registered a case of accidental death. But during investigations we found an Aadhar card and her mobile phone," Keshavrao Naik, inspector, Jahwar police station said. "We found Bhogade's number after going through the call data records. He confessed to the crime during interrogation."

"We have arrested him under Sections 302 (murder) and 376 (rape) of the IPC and under Sections 4 and 8 of the prevention of children from sexual offences act. He has been remanded in police custody till August 1.

Man says killed paramour as she pestered him to divorce wife

The 25-year-old man, who killed his 17-year-old paramour in Jawhar a couple of weeks ago, has said she was pestering him to divorce his wife.

The girl's body was found hanging from the ceiling of a hotel room on July 19, and her phone call records led to the arrest of Shankar Kashinath Bhogade on Friday.

Bhogade admitted that he had had sexual relations with the girl, who was a student of Std XI, after which she got pregnant. When she realised she had conceived, she demanded money from him to buy abortion pills.

"Bhogade said during interrogation that the girl threatened to end her life if he didn't divorce his wife and marry her. He also said that the girl insisted on unprotected sex," a Jawhar police official said.

Hoping to end the bother over the affair, he thought of killing her life and worked out a plan. He invited her to a hotel, where he made her consume a cold drink laced with poison in the name of giving her an abortion pill and then hung her body from a ceiling fan with her dupatta to make it appear to be a suicide.

The police initially registered a case of accidental death, but the girl's family demanded that they investigate the case.

The police say the store from where Bhogade purchased the poison is located near his residence. It seems that he had planned to commit the act some weeks ago, but could not as the girl did not come to meet him for some time.

Bhogade is charged with murder and rape under sections of the IPC and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act. He has been remanded in police custody till Friday.

Crime Patrol: Malad man says laboratory labelled him HIV+ for cash (Episode 438 on 28th Nov 2014)

The Inside Story
Devastated victim contemplated suicide until two more tests proved he did not have the infection.

A 38-year-old man has filed a complaint with the Maharashtra Medical Council against a city doctor and a pathology lab technician, alleging that they misled him to believe he was HIV+ and promised complete recovery in three months, with 'treatment' that would cost Rs 1 lakh.

Joel Chettiar, employee of a property consultancy, has also filed a police complaint against the two, noting that the lab's doctored report turned his world upside down and that at one point he had contemplated suicide.

Chettiar was advised a routine blood investigation, including HIV screening, by a local doctor whom he had consulted for falling ill frequently and losing weight. On March 20, Chettiar submitted his blood sample at The Pacific Lab located in Malad (West). On March 23, he had the bombshell in his hand - a report saying he was HIV+.

That evening, Chettiar had a big fight with his wife, who threatened to walk out on him. "I was broken. I wanted to end my life, but my wife stopped me," Chettiar, the father of an eight-year-old boy told Mumbai Mirror on Thursday.

The next day, Chettiar's wife met Pacific Lab technician and officer in-charge Rajendra Mehra. Chettiar's complaint says Mehra recommended a doctor who he claimed had expertise in treating HIV patients. The complaint adds that Mehra said that the treatment would cost Rs 1 lakh and promised that Chettiar would recover fully in three months.

Since it was impossible for him to raise Rs 1 lakh, Chettiar decided to seek help from a family friend, who advised him to get a fresh test done at a government lab.

On March 24, Chettiar did an HIV antibody test at Mumbai District AIDS Control Society (MDACS), a recognised government centre, and another test at Sunflower Laboratory at Malad. Results of both tests revealed he did not have HIV infection.

"I can't describe the sense of relief I felt. But I was angry too. Pacific Lab's greed or incompetence had almost destroyed my life," he said.

On April 1, Chettiar lodged a complaint against the lab at the Charkop police station and filed another with the Maharashtra Medical Council. Both complaints named Mehra and Dr Pravin Shinde, MD Path, who had signed Chettiar's report.

When Mumbai Mirror contacted Mehra, he said: "Such error is not possible. We will have to check whether our technician collected the wrong blood sample."

Mehra denied he recommended any doctor to Chettiar's wife or demanded Rs 1 lakh for treatment. "It's a false allegation. I am a technician and not a doctor. How can I ask for money for treatment?"

Dr Shinde, who is a visiting consultant at the lab, said: "The report has my signature which means I have seen it. Such error is impossible, but I will inquire into the matter."

Additional Project Director, MDACS, Dr Balkrishna B Adsul, said the serum HIV antibody is standard procedure and a reliable test. "It's rare that the test can give two different results in such a short duration, especially in cases where antibodies are detected."

IMA PROMISES ACTION AGAINST ERRANT LABS

The Indian Medical Association (IMA) on Thursday said a circular has been issued to all 197 of its branches across the state, instructing doctors to refrain from associating themselves with pathology and diagnostic laboratories not run by qualified pathologists. The circular also warned of action against all those found endorsing such laboratories.

According to an estimate by the Maharashtra Association of Practicing Pathologists and Microbiologists (MAPPM), there are approximately 6,000 illegal pathological laboratories in the state, against whom the government is yet to take action.

"We have made it very clear that action will be taken against any doctor found endorsing any pathological laboratory without holding a specialist's degree in pathology," said Dr Dilip Sarda, state president, IMA. According to MAPPM president Sandeep Yadav, the association has filed FIRs against 16 labs run by unqualified technicians and four doctors who lent their name to several labs.

Maharashtra Medical Council (MMC) member, Dr Suhas Pingale, said, "As per the Medical Council of India, reports of any kind to patients without authentication by a pathologist registered with MMC. If the guidelines are violated, the laboratory's licence will be cancelled."
