Sunil Baban Pachange alias Avdut Babab Pandav (28) of Pachange chawl in Dapodi was produced Monday before a Khed court,which remanded him in police custody till May 24.
Deceased Dhananjay Jagtap (22) and his mother Durgabai (50) were residents of Balut Ali in Chakan.
Police said Dhananjay was a close friend of Sunil and killed him and his mother on the instructions of a “godman”.
“Sunil admitted a godman told him money would rain over him if he killed two persons on ashtami (eighth day of the month in Lunar calendar,April 18) and dashami (10th day,April 20). Sunil said he met the godman a few days before the murders but refused to reveal his identity,” said senior inspector Sushil Kadam.
While Sunil is a graduate,Dhananjay had done MCom and was looking for a job. Dhananjay,whose father died about 20 years ago,reportedly suspected his mother of having an affair.
Police said Dhananjay told Sunil he was upset with his mother’s behaviour and wanted to kill her. They planned to kill her at Lonavla. On April 18,Sunil took Dhananjay to Lonavla to explain how they would execute the murder. On the pretext of giving a demonstration,police said,he tied Dhananjay with a rope and killed him with an iron rod.
Sunil returned to Chakan and told Durgabai that Dhananjay did not come with him as he got a good job.
Two days later,on April 20,Sunil took Durgabai to Chakan on the pretext of visiting a temple where he slit her throat and threw her body in a well.
Locals fished out the body and informed police. Meanwhile,police also found Dhananjay’s body.
On suspicion,they detained Sunil on Sunday.
