Crime Patrol: Aasai-inspired Murder, Admits Woman (Episode 422 on 28th Sep 2014)

The Inside Story
Aasai-inspired Murder, Admits Woman

Imitation is the best form of flattery. But actor Ajith won’t be happy with how a woman and her lover used a scene in his movie Aasai to kill the husband.

Babykala and her former paramour Gowrishankar confessed to the murder of Radhakrishnan and blamed each other for the deed in a TV show aired on April 17 and 18. The duo was arrested and remanded to judicial custody on Wednesday.

Preliminary investigation revealed that Babykala was in a relationship with Gowrishankar, a friend of her brother-in-law Suresh, for one year before the murder, which was committed on July 17, 2010. When the two decided to do away with Babykala’s husband, Gowrishankar even promised to look after her two daughters. On the day of the murder, Babykala took her daughters out in the neighbourhood after informing Gowrishankar that her husband was drunk and stood guard until the murder was executed. Taking the cue from Ajith-starrer Aasai, Gowrishankar wrapped a plastic bag around Radakrishnan’s face and suffocated him to death besides stomping on his throat repeatedly.

After returning home, Babykala staged the scene to make the murder look like a natural death. At the time, strangulation marks around Radhakrishnan’s throat were noticed but they were thought to be accident marks as the deceased had consumed a lot of alcohol that day. The body was then cremated in SIDCO Nagar and a death certificate was issued which said Radhakrishnan had died of a heart attack.

Gowrishankar was later appointed as a Revenue Inspector and moved to Tiruvallur in 2012 while Baby Kala continued to stay in Villivakkam.

Confessions on reality TV: I murdered my dear husband

BANGALORE: When a criminal finally confesses to a crime, especially one as grisly as murder, it usually occurs in the dark confines of a police interrogation room after hours of difficult questioning and psychological breakdowns. But for one woman and her paramour, their crime of passion was revealed on state-wide television, during a reality show.

That’s right. Tamil woman Baby Kala could have gotten away with the murder of her husband Radhakrishnan, had she decided to keep her mouth shut on TV. But, according to a report by the Times News Network, Kala became upset when her lover and accomplice, Gowri Shankar, decided to leave her for another woman, prompting Kala to not only go down, but take him with her.

The Zee Tamil program “Solvathelam Unmai” is a show in which various people come and speak to the host, actress Lakshmi Ramakrishnan, about their personal problems, in the hope that she can offer some kind of advice and that by telling their story, they achieve some measure of peace by simply getting it off their chests.

On a recent episode of show, Kala came on and spilled the beans of the entire sordid affair. According to her account, she and Shankar became romantically involved several years ago, and after some time, decided to finally act on their love by getting married. Unfortunately, Kala was married to Radhakrishnan (39), who had married her in 1995; however, their union had almost never been a happy one.

To alleviate the Radhakrishnan problem, the duo decided to kill him. Kala and Shankar smothered the former’s husband on the night of July 17, 2010, with a large plastic bag. They then told everyone he died of a heart attack, and got away scot-free.

However, in the intervening three-and-a-half years, Shankar found another woman, and fell in love with her. He subsequently left Kala to be with this woman, and announced his intention to marry her. This ticked off Kala, who then decided to go on television and confess to her and Shankar’s involvement with the killing.

Now, both are in police custody, awaiting trial for their crimes. There is no word yet on what kind of sentence they face, nor when their trial will get underway.

Woman, Lover Cry Murder on TV, Held

Revelation in a TV show landed a 38-year-old woman and her paramour, a Revenue Inspector, behind bars for the murder of the woman’s husband in Villivakkam in July 2010. In an episode of Zee TV show Solvathellam Unmai aired on April 17 and 18, Babykala accused her 33-year-old paramour Gowrishankar of killing her husband Radakrishnan while Gowrishankar said it was Babykala who had instigated him to commit the crime. The duo was arrested after they confessed to have strangulated Babykala’s husband on July 17, 2010, when the latter was in an inebriated condition at his residence. At the time, the death was ruled as a case of heart attack.

Mother of two, Babykala, who is currently in another relationship with an armed reserve head constable Thambirajan, learnt that Gowrishankar’s marriage had been fixed with the daughter of retired judge. She consulted with her current lover and decided to call the TV show.

During the show, Babykala and Gowrishankar kept blaming each other. The show’s host, accusing Babykala of being a party to the act, decided to approach the police. Meanwhile, Kachana, mother of Radakrishnan, came to know the truth of her son’s death though the show and preferred a complaint post which Babykala and Gowrishankar were arrested.

Crime Patrol: Teenage girl raped by stepfather (Episode 421 on 26th Sep 2014)

The Inside Story
Mumbai: A 14-year-old girl was allegedly raped by her stepfather on a number of occasions at their residence in suburban Malad, police said on Wednesday.

An FIR was registered in Malwani police station last night and a manhunt launched for the accused, Azeem Shaikh (35), who was sexually abusing his stepdaughter since February, they said.

The victim was first raped in February this year by Shaikh, and was subsequently sexually abused on different occasions when her mother was away at work, police said.

Shaikh is the second husband of the girl's mother.

"As the girl could not bear the sexual harassment by Shaikh, she went to her uncle's residence in the same area recently," Police Inspector Sitaram Phand told PTI.

When the victim refused to return home, her worried mother went to her brother's house along with Shaikh to bring her back, he said.

"The girl was adamant that she would not return home. This led to a heated argument between her mother and uncle and the matter was brought to the notice of police, which sent the girl to children's remand home in Dongri," he said.

"However, a routine physical check up at the remand home revealed that the victim suffered sexual abuse, following which the remand officials initiated an enquiry. When the officials pursued the girl, she revealed that she was raped by her stepfather since February," the officer said.

The girl claimed she was thrashed by Shaikh and threatened with dire consequences if she revealed the offence to anybody.

The matter was brought to the notice of Malwani police, which registered an FIR and launched a manhunt for Shaikh.

The accused has been booked under IPC sections 376 (rape), 342 (wrongful confinement), 506 (criminal intimidation) and 323 (voluntarily causing hurt) and relevant sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO Act), 2012.

Crime Patrol: Mistaken identity: Innocent Babu dead, cops clueless about the other (Episode 409 on 19th September 2014)

The Inside Story
Like all boys his age, Babu Thakre was fond of dressing up well, painstakingly combing down his hair and even colouring it at whim, at times. By all accounts, Babu was a helpful boy, never crossing the lines that elder brother Chander had set for him. And like several boys of his age, Babu helped out family in every way he could, working till his back ached at whatever construction site that would hire a 16-year-old.Days into his latest job of digging sand for an additional floor at a neighbour’s home, Babu was picked up by two constables from Nizampura police station in Bhiwandi for theft of two kg of gold, and was allegedly tortured by them in police custody. He tried to commit suicide by hanging on June 21 when asked to return to the police station for further questioning. He later died at a hospital.

Babu’s detention, however, now appears to be a case of mistaken identity. The two constables had received a tip-off that a man named ‘Babu’ had stolen the gold. However, instead of a criminal on record named Babu who also lives in the same neighbourhood, they went after the teenager.

“There are two Babus in Mithpada — one is dead and the other is a criminal. Babu, who has criminal record, is 26-year-old and lives with his sister…. we do know that he has been arrested several times for petty thefts,” said Gautam Ubale, a friend of the deceased, told The Indian Express.

Ravinder Singhal, ACP (Crime), Thane, confirmed that the Nizampura police knew about the other Babu, “Now whether the informer got it wrong, or the police did, will only come out in the investigation,” he said.

Growing up in tribal family in Mithpada, in Bhiwandi, the 16-year-old had learnt to respect his brother Chander.

Chander, 30, shouldered responsibility of three younger brothers Raju (24), Ranjit (18) and Babu, sister Sonu (12), mother Thakubai (45), his wife and two children. The family’s patriarch, Sunil Thakre, had passed away more than 30 years ago.

Cramped in a shanty measuring 20 x 8 feet, the family could not afford education, prompting Babu to look for work when he turned 15.

“I would look for any kind of light work that he could do and earn around Rs 100 – Rs 150 a day,” said Chander, who works as a daily wage worker unloading sacks at nearby factories and pocketing between Rs 200 and Rs 250 a day.

Around 11 am on June 20, only the third day at his latest job, two constables from the Nizampura police station – Dheeraj Khairmode (26) and Jalindar Bhojne (27) – showed up at the doorstep of Pooja Waghe where Babu was working and asked for him.

Crime Patrol: 25 yrs after Dhatt’s murder, 3 Punjab former cops get jail (Episode 419, 420 on 20th, 21st Sep 2014)

PART 1

PART 2

The Inside Story
Hoshiarpur, May 9

It’s justice at last for 98-year-old Parkash Kaur, the younger sister of Shaheed Bhagat Singh. Nearly 25 years after her son-in-law’s brother Kuljeet Singh Dhatt was allegedly killed by five Punjab Police personnel in Hoshiarpur district, Additional Sessions Judge Poonam R Joshi today convicted three of them in the case. The court sentenced them to five-year imprisonment, besides imposing a fine of Rs 2.1 lakh each. Two other accused have already died.

Kuljit Singh Dhatt was abducted by the police from Ambala Jattan village on July 23, 1989, along with five others. While others were released, there was no news about Kuljit Singh Dhatt.

Kuljit’s brother Harbhajan was the son-in-law of martyr Bhagat Singh’s sister Parkash Kaur. After Kuljit’s abduction, people held protests seeking his release. Two days later, the police registered an FIR at the Tanda police station stating that Kuljit was arrested at a check point on the intervening night of July 25 and 26 in 1989.

It was stated in the FIR that he had confessed to having hidden a load of weapons and ammunition on the banks of the Beas. When the police took him to the spot for the recovery of weapons, he broke the chain and jumped into the river. Later on, another FIR was lodged in which it was recorded that Kuljit was seen during a firing incident in an area under the Tanda police station. Parkash Kaur and deceased’s wife moved the Supreme Court, which constituted an inquiry commission headed by retired Sessions judge HL Randev in September 1990.

In 1993, the commission submitted its report indicting five policemen-then SP (operations) SPS Basra, Dasuya DSP AS Sandhu, Dasuya SHO Jaspal Singh, Tanda SHO Sardul Singh and Garhdiwala chowki in charge Sita Ram-for abducting and eliminating Dhatt.

The SC later ordered registration of a case against the accused policemen. They were booked for criminal conspiracy, abduction and illegal confinement. Parkash Kaur again moved the SC and after the SC rap, the FIR was amended and Sections 364 (abduction with the motive of murder), 365, 466, 218, 201 and 120-B of the IPC were added. The accused moved the high court, seeking quashing of the FIR.

The case remained pending in the high court for more than 14 years. Canada-based Parkash Kaur moved the Supreme Court, seeking early hearing.

The court today convicted SPS Basra, Jaspal Singh and Sita Ram. Sardul Singh and AS Sandhu have already died. Aditional District Attorney TS Grewal said, “The court sentenced the accused to five-year rigorous imprisonment under Section 364 of the IPC, besides imposing a fine of Rs 1 lakh each. They were also awarded five-year term and a fine of Rs 1 lakh each under Section 120B of the IPC and two-year term and a fine of Rs 10,000 each under Section 218 of the IPC. Out of the each fine amount of Rs 1 lakh, Rs 90,000 will be paid to the deceased’s family as compensation. The jail terms will run concurrently.”

Expressing dissatisfaction over the sentence, Dhatt’s brother Harbhajan Singh said, “After 25 years of legal battle, we have received no justice. The sentence awarded by the court is not sufficient and we will move the high court for the enhancement of the sentence.”

Victim was Bhagat Singh’s relative

  • Kuljeet Singh Dhatt, brother of the son-in-law of Shaheed Bhagat Singh’s younger sister Parkash Kaur, was allegedly abducted in Hoshiarpur district by the Punjab Police in 1989; he did not return thereafter

  • The court on Friday convicted three out of five accused police personnel and awarded them jail term; two other police personnel accused in the case are dead

  • An FIR against Dhatt said he had confessed to having hidden a load of weapons and ammunition on the banks of the Beas and that he jumped into the river when he was taken to the spot to recover weapons

Crime Patrol:Lovers get death for killing family (Episode 413, 414 on 6th, 7th Sep 2014)

In The Name Of Love: Lovers gets death penalty for killing their entire family (Episode 413, 414 on 6th, 7th Sep 2014)

PART 1

PART 2

The Inside Story
LUCKNOW: A sessions court in Jyotiba Phule Nagar district sentenced to death two young lovers who hacked to death all the six members of the girl's family at Bahman Garhi in Amroha on April 14, 2008. The court found their crime in the "rarest of rare'' category considering the two had conspired to kill their nearest ones in cold blood. It was also an extraordinarily quick dispensation of justice completed in just 27 months.

"It was a well thought out crime... which explains the culprits knew what they were up to. The crime was not a result of a fit of anger,'' the judge observed. As the death sentence was announced, Shabnam (25), who stood in a corner of the crowded court room in a burqa (veil), wept inconsolably. Carrying her 20-month son in her arms, she walked to the police van without a word, despite a scrum of reporters surrounding her.

Her partner in crime Saleem, while leaving the court, held her responsible. "Sab logon ke kehne par usne humko phasa diya'' (she got me implicated),'' he said, as he was virtually dragged towards the prison van.

The shocking incident had come to light on April 14, 2008, when Shabnam came running out of her house well past midnight, crying for help. Neighbours who came to her rescue were shocked to see the bloodbath inside her house.

Bodies of her father, Shaukat (50), mother, Hashmi Khatoon (42), brothers Rashid (22), and Anees (30), his wife Anjum (26), and their infant son, Arsh, were found bloodsoaked. While Rasheed was an MCA student, Anees worked as a civil engineer in Jalandhar. They were spending their vacations together when the ghastly murders took place.

Shabnam had then told the cops that she was asleep on the terrace and came down after it started to drizzle around two am. As she climbed down the stairs, she said she saw the bloody scene. Shabnam accused the local police of not responding to her cries for help. As a result, an inspector and four constables in the neighbourhood chowki were suspended.

Talking to TOI, then DIG Badri Prasad, now posted in Moradabad, said, "All the victims had slit injuries and the scene exhibited no sign of resistance from the victims suggesting they were drugged.'' The cops grew suspicious when Shabnam said she too had dinner with the rest of the family members but didn't get knocked off.

Investigators then deputed a woman SI and two lady constables on the pretext that the killers might target her. The trio later heard her talk to someone on phone. The call led the cops to their neighbour, Saleem, and the case was cracked. Shabnam and Saleem had wiped out the entire family because they were opposed to their marriage.

Crime Patrol: Five children who were forced to live at their parents' grave in Uttar Pradesh (Episode 411 on 31st Aug 2014)

The Inside Story
PRATAPGARH: For at least 2 months, a group of children, the youngest barely seven, made their home a blue plastic sheet of tent near their parents' graves in Pratapgarh, over 160 kms from Lucknow.

They slept there, and ate whenever villagers gave them food.

The children are siblings. Their parents died of AIDS, within two years of each other. Not one relative offered to help. An uncle said if they stayed in the small house where they were growing up, they would be infected with the virus that killed their parents.

The eldest, a 21-year-old, moved his three brothers and sister to the graveyard.

Residents of their old neighbourhood admit they offered the children no assistance, and ostracized them.

"We thought we too could get infected, so we told them to stay away, outside the village," said Hazrat Ali.

Hours after NDTV reported the horrific story, Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav announced a house would be arranged for them along with one lakh per child. But no relative has offered to stay with them or help them with the money.

"We are giving them a house. Two of them will be sent to school. And the eldest one will get work under MNREGA (rural employment scheme), but what we have to end is the social boycott," said a local official, Vidya Bhushan.

For now, the children have been moved into their grandmother's house.

But the scale of the challenge was evident in a short conversation with their uncle, who said he is still reluctant to help bring them up. Only if they test negative for HIV, he warned. They were tested today; results show they are free of HIV.

As NDTV left the village, the siblings were moving whatever little they had, into their grandmother's home, knowing that even this home, is temporary.
