PART 1

PART 2

The Inside Story
PUNE: Ten months after Sunita Bhimrao Kamble (43) of Vakratunda society, Dhankawdi was found murdered in her flat, the crime branch (unit-II) led by inspector Sunil Patil solved the case following the arrest of her father Bhimrao Kamble (65), a retired police inspector who allegedly hatched the plot to kill his daughter in order to gain possession of her flat.

The police have also arrested Sunita's brother-in-law Kalappa Shankar Kut (43) of Mira Road, Thane district, who strangulated her to death on January 14 this year. Kut's brother Babasaheb Kut (46) of Kolhapur, who destroyed Sunita's cellphone has also been arrested.

Inspector Patil said that on January 14, Sunita was found murdered in her flat. She was strangulated to death by her dupatta. The killers had not left any clues. "The Sahakarnagar police was investigating the case. But, Sunita's father, who is a retired police inspector had requested the police commissioner to transfer the investigations to the crime branch," Patil said.

"Our team comprising assistant police inspector Karbhari Handore, sub-inspector Rajan Jadgale, police constables Hari Ranpise, Sudhir Ghotkule and Santosh Pagar had visited Mumbai, Kolhapur and had also gone to Kerala in the course of the investigations. We were also keeping a watch on Sunita's relatives," Patil said.

Patil said that the police managed to recover Sunita's cellphone from the Panchganga river in Kolhapur. "With the help of the cellphone we managed to reach Sunita's brother-in-law Kalappa Kut," Patil said.

He said that during interrogation Kut admitted to his involvement in the murder. He also revealed that his brother Babasaheb had thrown the cellphone in the river. "Kut also revealed that Sunita's father had asked him to kill Sunita as he wanted to take possession of the flat, where Kamble and Sunita were living since the last two-and-a-half-years," Patil said.

Patil said that on January 14, Kut had come to Pune. He also called his brother Babasaheb from Kolhapur.

"He went up in Sunita's flat, while Babasaheb waited under the building. After strangulating Sunita to death, Kut picked up her cellphone and asked Babasaheb to destroy it," Patil said.

He said that when Kut reached Sunita's home, Bhimrao Kamble deliberately went out leaving the two alone. "We have also booked Kut's wife for her alleged involvement in the plot," Patil said.

MMS clip, threats from girlfriend's family forced Goa youth to kill self

KERI: A 21-year-old Goa boy's suicide note has revealed that he was pushed to end his life on August 5 as his girlfriend's family had threatened him after an MMS clip showing the couple together had gone viral.

Arjun Narayan Mainkar had hanged himself to death on August 5 and the police revealed details of his suicide note on Wednesday.

"I have agreed, in the presence of villagers and by signing an affidavit, to marry my girlfriend when she is 18. But I was continuously harassed by the girl's relatives and this resulted in loss of my peace of mind. To get rid of the pressure I am committing suicide. The chief minister of Goa should investigate my case and punish the culprits," Arjun wrote in his two-page suicide note written in Marathi.

Shaitaan - A Criminal Mind: Indian girl kills father and brother over love affair dispute (Episode 8 on 23rd Dec 2012)

The Inside Story

Let me die, says woman on Death Row for killing 8, Govt tells President show no mercy

Almost five years after she and her husband were convicted for murdering eight people, including her father, former independent MLA in Haryana Relu Ram Punia, and three children, Sonia wants to be hanged at the earliest. And she may get her wish too.

For, following her letter seeking rejection of her mercy petition, Union Home Minister P Chidambaram has written to President Pratibha Patil recommending that the mercy petitions of the husband and wife be rejected and the death sentence carried out.

Sonia and her husband Sanjeev are in Central Jail, Ambala. They have a seven-year-old child. On the night of August 23, 2001, Sonia and Sanjeev, according to case records, drugged and then clubbed to death former Barwala (Hisar) MLA Punia, his wife, Krishna; daughter Pammi; son Sunil; daughter-in-law Shakuntala and grandchildren Lokesh, Preeti and Shivani at Punia's farmhouse in Hisar. The apparent motive: inheritance.

In her letter dated February 17, 2009 addressed to the President, Sonia requested that her mercy petition be rejected. The letter, written in English, was sent from her jail cell.

"It is getting impossible to live like an insect in solitary confinement. My life is becoming horrible and giving me more and more pain by every second passing," her letter says. "I don't have any means to live and want to die once rather than dying with each passing minute."

Her plea was forwarded to the Union Home Ministry for its comments. In his recommendation to the President, Chidambaram said that even though Sonia is a woman, considering the nature of her crime, she doesn't deserve sympathy, there are no extenuating factors or mitigating grounds for the President to exercise her discretion for grant of clemency. And, therefore, the mercy petition be rejected paving the way for Sonia and her husband to be hanged.

The murders had stunned Hisar with villagers setting up a committee to bring the killers to justice. That Punia's was a rags-to-riches story — he started in a private truck company and built assets worth crores — only added to the drama.

On May 31, 2004, the Hisar District and Sessions Judge awarded death penalty to the duo. But on April 12, 2005, the Punjab and Haryana HC, while upholding the conviction, commuted the death sentence to life for both which was later upturned by the Supreme Court on February 15, 2007.

In its order, the SC reversed the HC decision and restored the death sentence to both husband and wife. Their mercy petitions were also rejected by the Haryana Governor in October 2007, who referred the matter to the President under Article 72 of Constitution where it is pending.

"The President will decide at the appropriate time," said a Rashtrapati Bhavan source when asked if the President would reject the mercy petition after the communication from the Centre.

Crime Patrol: Brother solves Gurgaon hit and run (Episode 193, Episode 194 on 21st, 22nd Dec 2012)

The Inside Story
GURGAON: In a country where hit-and-run cases are quite common and the culprits get away easily, a top banker (the victim's brother), with some help from Gurgaon Police, managed to nab one of the accused. They had only a small piece of evidence – a piece of broken glass from the headlight of a Bajaj bike found at the accident spot – but managed to track down three accused and the bike. One of them has been arrested and sent to jail.

After techie Munish Dutta's body was found lying in a pit filled with water on Badshahpur Road in Sector-47 on July 12 - two days after he was killed - the police recorded it as a hit-and-run case. His brother, Rajnish Dutta, president of a major private bank, then took it on himself to solve the case. "I saw the broken glass pieces at the site. It had a number and also 'Bajaj' written on it. I told cops to collect that evidence," Rajnish said.

Then he went to Haridwar to perform the last rites. After returning, he went back to the site and visited the nearby areas to find out whether anyone was aware of a late-evening accident at that spot. Rajnish met a woman in Sector-47 who told him that a taxi driver was mentioning some accident involving a bike. The driver had seen the accident when he was ferrying a passenger from IGI airport.

"Getting this lead from her, I traced the cab agency and the driver. Taking his help, I managed to talk to the passenger, who lives in the same colony where Munish lived. Both confirmed that the accident had taken place at 7.45pm. Munish used to cross this spot around that time while returning from work," Rajnish said. The witness told him a bike was involved in the accident and people had gathered at the spot.

Rajnish then spoke to a local petrol pump owner and construction material dealers and found people who had taken the bike riders to a local hospital. "One of the locals told me three men had been injured in this accident, but one of them had fled from the spot. I came to know that an ambulance had been called to the spot and that the call had been made from the police control room. I recorded all these statements in my mobile phone. Finally, we reached a private hospital where the injured were brought by an autorickshaw driver," the banker said.

Rajnish then did some more spadework by speaking to different people in Sector-47 and got to know that three men, allegedly drunk, were on the bike that evening. He took up the case with joint commissioner of police Alok Mittal, who put a cop with the cybercrime cell, Jasbir Singh, on the job. "When he came to me, he had enough information and had done a lot of homework. We worked on his information and the case was cracked," Mittal admitted.

The two then traced the main accused, Sanjay Kumar, to Mahua in Jhansi district. Rajnish spoke to top cops of Bundelkhand and Chitrakoot and Gurgaon police arrested Sanjay. He was sent to judicial custody on Wednesday.

"I am sure the other two others will also be arrested. I have told the cops that the accused should be booked in a hit-and-run case and for causing death due to negligent driving besides destroying evidence. They could have called the police or an ambulance and my brother could have been saved," said Rajnish.

He said that while people like him with a sound financial background and resources may be able to crack such a case, the police might be closing several such cases after little investigation. "If I could do it, why can't the police with their huge manpower do it?" he asked.

Police team in Panvel to probe kids' death

NASHIK: A team of police personnel from Kasara left for Panvel to investigate the mysterious deaths of two children, who were found dead along the Mumbai-Agra national highway on Tuesday morning.

Deputy superintendent of police of Shahapur, Prasant Wagunde said that the bodies had been identified. The girl is identified as Janavhi Nitin Shah (9), while the boy is identified as Parag Nitin Shah (8). The police traced the relatives of the deceased to Panvel, who later identified the bodies.

The father of the kids has been missing and the police are on his track for further investigations as the needle of suspicion points towards him.

On Tuesday at around 8.30 am, the Kasara police received information that two bodies were found lying along the Mumbai-Agra highway near Latifwadi where the road descends the hill through Kasara Ghat towards Mumbai. The police rushed to the incident spot and recovered the bodies.

Assistant Police Inspector Vilash Shende of the Kasara Police Station informed that there were no injury marks of any weapon on the bodies and from the ligature marks on their necks they deduced that the children were strangulated.

Shende added, "We found an ATM card in the pocket of the girl's dress along with her photo and we also recovered another slip of some bank transaction in the pocket of the boy's dress, through which we traced their relatives and contacted them. From the condition of the bodies, it appeared that the kids were killed a few hours before their bodies were discovered."

After rushing the bodies to the primary health centre at Kasara, they were subsequently sent to JJ Hospital for forensic investigation and post mortem.

Meanwhile, DSP Wagunde informed that a team was sent to Panvel to find out with whom the children left their home and how did they arrive in Kasara. Wagunde said the father works in a garment shop in Panvel and ruled out the possibility of the children being kidnapped for ransom.

Panvel father held, doctorss declare him fit after suicide attempt

MUMBAI: The Kasara police arrested Nitin Shah (45), accused of killing his children, late on Saturday after doctors at JJ hospital declared him fit.

Nitin was at JJ hospital under police surveillance for three days. The police were worried that Nitin, who attempted suicide after killing his children, may make a similar attempt in the hospital.

Nitin had been depressed for some time over his wife Sonam's "mental illness" and last weekend, while at home due to the shut-down after Bal Thackeray's death, his despair worsened.

On Monday morning, after informing his wife that he was going to his father's home, he took his children Janhavi (12) and Parag (10) to Igatpuri by bus. On the way back in the evening, Nitin got them to disembark at Kasara ghat and walk into the forests.

It was there, cops said, that Nitin told his children of his desire to kill them as his mother's "illness" had taken a toll on him. However, unable to kill the two as they looked on, he first put them to sleep and early on Tuesday, while Janhavi and Parag were still asleep, he strangulated them. Nitin tried to end his own life with the same cloth, but did not go through with the plan. After wandering in Mumbai trains for two days, he returned to Kasara ghat early on Thursday and slit his wrists. He was discovered by cops who took him to JJ Hospital.

A cop part of the team said that Nitin would be produced in the holiday court on Sunday.

Crime Patrol: Bangalore girl smilingly admits to killing fiancee, arrested (Episode 188, 189 on 8th-9th Dec 2012)

The Inside Story

Bangalore: A young girl in Bangalore was on Tuesday accused of killing her fiancee over reasons that are yet unclear. The police say that the girl, identified as Saumya, hatched a conspiracy to kill him after she noticed "a change in behaviour" in her fiancee Nitesh.

The police say that Saumya took help from one of her friends to kill Nitesh who lived in Rajajinagar. Nitesh's body was found outside the city on October 21. The police got some evidence from the spot where the 25-year-old software engineer's body was found.

The police recovered a mobile phone and the call records revealed crucial details about the murder, on the basis of which Saumya was arrested. According to the police, Saumya, a student of psychology, smiled as she confessed to having killed Nitesh. The police said that Saumya did not look repentant in the least.

The police say that the girl had hatched a conspiracy to know some details from her fiancee but finally killed him.

Saumya reportedly met Nitesh on Facebook and the two slowly came close, before getting engaged. Saumya, however, said that Nitesh resigned from his job a few days ago and there was a noticeable change in his behaviour too.

Saumya said that this created suspicion in her mind and she decided to investigate. On October 21, Saumya took Nitesh to Shilindra Doddi, on the outskirts of Bangalore, on the pretext of spending time together. There she gave him vodka mixed with ammonium sulphate. Police claim that Saumya believed that Nitesh would speak the truth under its influence. However, Nitesh started vomiting due to an overdose.

Saumya panicked and stuffed paper napkin in his mouth, as a result of which Nitesh was rendered unconscious. Saumya said she decided to kill him off and then called her friend Parsavanath. They reportedly crushed his head with a stone to hide his identity.

However, the police say that a hair clip belonging to Saumya was left behind at the murder scene which the police found. Moreover, the mobile found near Nitesh's body showed that the last call was made to Saumya following which the police arrested her and her friend.

A school essay by a seven-year-old has blown the lid on an incident of
domestic violence, with a police complaint filed against the boy’s father for
allegedly hitting his wife in a fit of rage.

The boy, a student of Thane’s Arya Cambridge International School, when asked
to write about his parents, had recounted how his father, Vinod Hanmattekar, a
35-year-old manager in the engineering firm Jacobs, often abused and hit his
mother.

According to an offense registered in Kasarwadavli Police Station, Hanmettekar
found the essay while going over his son's school's work last Sunday. Enraged,
he attacked his wife once again, forcing her to seek help from their
neighbour, who then convinced her to take the matter to the cops.

The boy’s mother, who has now gone to live with her parents in Dombivli, has
told the police that she has been the victim of her husband's anger in the
past.

“The woman recounted the incident about the essay by her son. She told us that
teachers in the school had been alarmed by what was written, and had even
spoken to her about it. She did not mention this to her husband, fearing that
he would get angry,” senior inspector Suresh Pawar told Mumbai Mirror.

“She told us that she had gone to her maternal home after a similar violent
episode in March this year, but had come back to her husband once her parents
intervened. A non-cognisable offence has been registered as of now, which can
be changed to Section 498A (Domestic Violence) of the IPC in case of a repeat
offence,” he added.

When contacted, the woman's neighbour at Neelkanth Heights in Kasarwadavli, S
Amrute confirmed that she had came to their house seeking shelter after the
latest episode. Hanmettekar declined to comment, saying it was a family
matter. His wife could not be contacted despite repeated attempts.

Shaitaan- A Criminal Mind: Mohammad Saleem Kuraishi A Serial Killer killed over 250 people (Episode 1 on 1st Dec 2012)

The Inside Story

Another serial killer was arrested by the Meerut police today here, Sahara Samay sources said.

According to the channel, arrested killer Mohammad Saleem Kuraishi (shown as Sunil) was involved in more than 250 cases of murder.

The kingpin of the Saleem gang confessed that he killed 250 people in three years.

The police said that he used to kill the people after looting them. At least 40 to 45 policemen also became victims of this notorious killer, the channel added.

At least 40-member Saleem gang was active in the eastern Uttar Pradesh and it was trying to spread its reach in western part of the state, police claimed.

The police said that raids are on to arrest other members of the game.

The alleged serial killer whose arrest Thursday led to the sensational disclosure about the killing of as many as 250 people, has named seven more accomplices.

'We are rushing police parties in search of these people named by Salim, whose gang of highway robbers has confessed to have killed 250 men, women and children over the past few months,' Meerut senior superintendent of police Dipesh Juneja told IANS Friday.

He said: 'All of them, including Salim belong to Bahraich, a Uttar Pradesh district bordering Nepal.'

Salim, a middle-aged taxi driver, had told the police that most of his victims were tourists or outstation visitors who hired his cab for travelling in and around the city.

'He and his gang members would kill the passengers and pocket away their valuables and cash,' the police official said.

Serial killer escapes from train, escorting policemen held

Bhadohi (UP), Sept. 5 (PTI): A serial killer, accused in about 300 criminal cases, today jumped out of a moving train and escaped while he was being brought by police to Varanasi in connection with a court case.

Salim Qureshi, brought from Meerut in the Kashi Vishwanath Express train, fled between the Suryavan and Bhadohi railway stations while the three constables escorting him -- Khemchand, Gyanand Singh and Raj Bahadur -- were sleeping. Qureshi removed the handcuff and jumped out of the sleeper class coach to escape, police said.

The escort team found Qureshi missing from the coach when the train reached Suryavan station here. An FIR was registered at Janghai police station in Allahabad district after Suryavan police refused to lodge the case as it was not under their jurisdiction.

The three constables were arrested later and a departmental proceeding initiated against them for dereliction of duty.

A manhunt has been launched in Allahabad, Bhadohi and Varanasi districts to nab Qureshi, who was brought for his appearance in the murder case of RPF constable Rajesh Singh. He was arrested in Meerut on March eight in connection with several cases of murder, loot and other crimes.
