MUMBAI: A robbery bid at a jewellery store was foiled as the four alleged contract killers were arrested with firearms the north-west suburb, police sources said.

The four, identified as Mahesh Nagnath Mandekar (25), Santosh Anand Mane (23), Amar Anand Kudale (24) and Namdeo Baburao Kalse (22) were arrested while moving around suspiciously in suburban Andheri on Tuesday, they said.

Two factory made pistols, a country made revolver and 12 live rounds were recovered from the gang, a senior police officer from the Andheri police station said.

"All of them have past criminal records and are involved in serious crimes like murder and attempt to murder. Mane hails from Mumbai while the rest are from Pune," he said.

They were about to execute a planned robbery at a jeweller's shop when they were arrested.

During interrogation, they have told the police that they had taken a 'supari' (contract killing sum) to kill a city based builder and also a trade union leader from Pune, he said.

"This is a separate gang altogether and not associated with any organised crime syndicates," he said adding, the four will be produced before a local court for remand on Wednesday.
