Dhaula Kuan gangrape victim still in trauma

NEW DELHI, Oct 16 – On the day that a Delhi court convicted all the five persons accused in the case, the 34-year-old victim of the Dhaula Kuan gangrape is still haunted by her horrifying ordeal of four years back.

The woman quit her BPO job and in 2011 went back to her home in Mizoram’s Aizawl, never to return to Delhi.

She is trying to pick up the pieces by starting a small business in her native village, said Kuki, one of her close friends.

“I informed her about the verdict and she said she was happy to know about it and is looking forward to the quantum of punishment they (the convicted persons) will be awarded,” Kuki said, adding that her friend had told her that she wants them to “get the severest punishment they deserve”.

“I wish they never get to touch a woman in their lives again”, Kuki quoted her friend as having said.

Kuki said that her friend, who has a daughter, is very much involved in church and community work.

The verdict also signals a triumph for Investigating Officer Rajkumari who had pursued the probe into the case.

“I am happy that the perpetrators have finally been brought to book. After the verdict was announced, I got a message from her saying ‘thanks’. I called her up and she was crying. She said she was happy with the verdict but added that she doesn’t want to speak to anybody,” said Rajkumari.

A Delhi court yesterday held all the five accused guilty in the 2010 Dhaula Kuan gangrape case, saying that the DNA report clearly demonstrates that the girl was raped by them.

The woman, who was a 30-year-old BPO executive then, was abducted while walking home at night with her friend after her shift had ended. After gangraping her, the five had abandoned her on the road in Dhaula Kuan of south Delhi.

Crime Patrol: 2 sisters, 3 others held for murder (Episode 436, 437 on 22nd, 23rd Nov 2014)

Part 1

Part 2

The Inside Story
Jun 26, 2013

BELGAUM: Belgaum police arrested two sisters and three others for a two-year-old murder and a shooting incident that took place on the night of June 15 near Munavalli of Savadatti taluk recently.

The two sisters are Shwetha Chandrashekar Haarigency, 22, and Sushma Chandrashekar Haarigency, 19, from Jeevapura of Savadatti taluk. Police said that while Shwetha is a PU dropout, her sister is a BCom graduate.

Belgaum police on Tuesday arrested the five four persons, including the victim's niece, in connection with the shooting of a teacher of Benakati Primary School near Munavalli of Savadatti taluk.

With the arrest of these five, police also cracked a murder committed in 2011. The accused are Ravi Shankar Naukudakar, 22, Manjunath Basappa Dalvoy, 23 Yellappa Beerappa Maali, 25, all from Hidkal of Raibag taluk and the two sisters.

Shwetha Chandrashekar Haarigency, 22, and Sushma Chandrashekar Haarigency,19, from Jeevapura of Savadatti taluk.

Rajendra Devreddy, a teacher, was heading to his in-law's house in Savadatti on his two-wheeler when two men on a bike opened shot him from close range. He sustained bullet injuries on his back and was admitted to KLE Hospital in Belgaum city, where he is recovering.

When Rajendra was working at Mugalakud School his niece, Shwetha Chandrashekar Haarigency used to stay with him. Shwetha was involved with Ravi, one of the accused, said police. When Rajendra was transferred to Benakati Primary, he advised Shwetha to break off all ties with Ravi. Annoyed with her uncle's constant interference, Shwetha and Ravi plotted to bump off Rajendra.

Ravi and his two friends, Manjuath and Yellappa, shot Rajendra on the night of June 15. Before the shooting, the accused called Rajendra on his cellphone. This gave police the breakthrough they needed to nab the accused.

Murder most foul

During interrogation, police also solved another murder that had taken place in 2011, also involving Shwetha and Ravi. Basavaraju, 23, a college graduate, was in love with Shwetha and wanted to marry her, police said. Frustrated with his advances and interest in her, Shwetha and Ravi hatched a plan to kill Basavaraju. The duo alongwith Manjunath, Sushma and Basavaraju planned a trip to Goa. On their return from Goa, they strangled Basavarju to death and disposed of his body in the ghats. The victim's family had filed a missing complaint at Kudachi station, said police.

Ravi, Manjunath and Yellappa are also wanted in several cases of burglaries in Hidkal. They have looted 30 mobile phones and a computer apart from a two-wheeler, which was used for the crime.

Superintendent of Police Sandeep Patil had formed two teams to crack the teacher's shooting incident. The team was led by Savadatti CPI MS Patil, Raibag CPI Sripad Juldhe and Savadatti PSI Ningagowda.

According to Police, the reason for the shootout is said that, the victim Rajendra was relative of accused Swetha. Before working at Benakati Primary School, Rajendra was working at Mugalakud School. During his stay in Mugalakud; Swetha, who happens to be Rajendra's sister's daughter, was staying with him. During this time, Swetha develops relation with the prime accused Ravi. When Rajendra came to know about their relation, he shifted his resident to Jeevapura of Savadatti Taluk and told Swetha not to continue any relation with Ravi. Swetha after getting annoyed with Rajendras scolding reported the incident to Ravi. The duo decided to teach a lesson to Rajendra. Ravi along with two of his friends, Manjuath and Yellappa with the help of stolen bike shot Rajendra at Munavalli of Savadatti Taluk. Before shooting the victim, the accused had made a call to Rajendra, this was the major hint for the police to track the accused.

During interrogation, the accused reveals about one more such incident committed in 2011. Two years back, in a similar case, the victim Basavaraju was pestering Swetha to love him; Swetha who got frustrated about Basavaraju's harassment, chalked out a plan with Ravi to eliminate Basavaraju. Ravi along with his friend Manjunath, Sushma and Swetha chalks out a plan to eliminate Basavaraju. Along with Basavaraju they plan a trip for Goa. When they were returning from Goa, the gang strangulates Basavaraju throw the body to nearby ghatt. The family members of the Basavaraju give missing complaint at Kudachi Police Station.

Crime Patrol: Shocking: Unable to pay Rs. 8-lakh loan, man kills mother, wife and daughter (Episode 432 on 14th November 2014)

The Inside Story
MUMBAI: Debt, threats from loan sharks and sheer despair led a 40-year-old man to murder his wife, mother and seven-year-old daughter on Tuesday evening.

The next morning, residents of SLK Heights, Fatima Nagar woke up to the sounds of police sirens and officials questioning people after the accused, identified as Sagar Madhav Gaikwad, confessed to strangling his mother, wife and daughter.

According to Wanawadi police, Gaikwad, who stayed in the apartment on rental basis, first administered sleeping pills to his family and then strangled each of them.

Gaikwad, who was unemployed for the last two years and involved in share trading for the past year, lived with his wife Kavita, mother Shakuntala and daughter Ishita.

Killed in sleep

Cops said that on Tuesday afternoon, Gaikwad gave the sleeping pills to the three of them. Then, around 3 pm, he strangled his daughter with a scarf.

After a two-hour interval, he did the same to his mother, and finally at 7 pm he murdered his wife. He placed their bodies in two different bedrooms of the apartment, and went and slept in the hall.

The next morning around 9, Gaikwad called his friend and asked to be dropped off to the closest police station, where he confessed to the murders.

The stunned cops rushed to his place and found the dead bodies, which were sent for post-mortem around 2 pm.

Money problems

In his statement, Gaikwad said that he had taken a R6-lakh loan from a co-operative bank for a car. He was paying the monthly instalments but an amount of R4.5 lakh was still outstanding.

He added that he had taken another R1.9-lakh from a private moneylender at a 15 per cent interest rate.

"Gaikwad said that as he was finding it difficult to repay the amount, the moneylender was threatening him and his family with dire consequences. Unable to find a way out, he killed his family," said an official from Wanawadi police station.

Cops said that Gaikwad purchased the sleeping pills from a medical store at Vaiduwadi and knew the name of the medicine, as his mom regularly took the same pills.

Commenting on what spurred him to commit the triple murder, Gaikwad in his statement said that on Tuesday morning, he received a call from a moneylender, Ravi Pawar, demanding that he cough up R30,000 by evening. Disturbed and worried about where he would get the cash from, he decided to end his life.

"I was severely stressed and thought of ending my life. But it occurred to me that if I ended my lifemy family would suffer. So I decided to kill them and then end my life. After strangling my wife, child and mother, I tried to hang myself from the fan," said Gaikwad in his confession to the cops.

Additional Commissioner of Police (North Region) Prakash Mutyal said, "In his statement Gaikwad said that he committed the offence owing to depression.

He also mentioned that he tried to end his life, but prima facie we were unable to find any evidence to substantiate these claims. We will wait for the inquest and post-mortem reports, and investigate the case from all angles."

Govindpuri murder: Not robbers but sex worker, aides killed businessman

NEW DELHI: The man who was found stuffed inside a box-bed in a flat in Govindpuri on Tuesday has been identified as 54-year-old businessman K K Chopra. Two men have been arrested for their involvement in the incident.

Chopra was found dead on July 15 after his neighbours reported a foul smell emanating from the house. Police initially suspected he was killed by robbers.

On Thursday, police said they had arrested two men-Rajan and Rocky alias Arif-and were trying to trace three others, including a sex worker.

Six teams led by Govindpuri SHO Sunil Kumar questioned several sex workers and youths in the area and zoomed in on the duo following a tip-off.

During interrogation, the accused said they killed Chopra on July 10 and had were looking for a chance to dispose the body but police arrived before that.

Rajan said he had introduced Chopra to a sex worker called Komal and had even got him the flat. Rocky, Komal's boyfriend, said he had become possessive because of the growing proximity between Komal and Chopra. Financial crunch, an evil mind and possessiveness led Komal and Rocky to plan to eliminate Chopra and usurp his money.

On July 10, Komal made Chopra tell her his ATM PIN while they were in bed. An hour later, Rocky, Rajan and two others landed up at the flat and began arguing with Chopra. Rocky asked Chopra if he had relations with Komal and when he nodded in the affirmative, Rocky thrashed Chopra and tied him up with a rope. Rajan allegedly taped Chopra's mouth and nose, after which they stuffed him in the box-bed, where Chopra choked to death. They also smothered him to ensure he was dead, police said. The accused later withdrew thousands from an ATM using Chopra's card and fled to UP.

Chopra, police said, was a divorcee. He earlier lived in E block in GK-II but had sold off the flat to a builder and shifted to the DDA flats in Kalkaji. His wife has alleged he was a womanizer which had even led to their divorce. She got custody of their two children-one is in Bangalore and the other is in the US.

Chopra's family has refused to accept his body for conducting last rites.

DCP (southeast) P Karunakaran said a case of murder and destruction of evidence has been registered.

Crime Patrol: Neighbour arrested for ‘murder’ of 7-year-old girl in Chembur (Episode 427 on 25th Oct 2014)

The Inside Story
The police on Tuesday arrested a 30-year-old man for allegedly murdering his neighbour’s 7-year-old daughter. The police said Divakar Hazara (30) was trying to steal money from his neighbour’s house when the girl entered, and he killed her to ensure that she did not tell anyone what she had seen.

According to the Tilak Nagar police, the victim, Beauty Sarkar (7), used to stay with her parents and elder brother near the Noorani Masjid in Chembur. Her father works as a labourer, her mother is a housemaid, and both work most of the day, leaving the children alone at home. “On Monday afternoon, the mother Sonali (27) returned home from work and found Beauty sitting lifeless with her head inside a bucket full of water. Sonali rushed her to the Rajawadi Hospital in Ghatkopar with the help of some neighbours, where she was declared dead before admission,” officers said. Late on Monday night, post mortem examination revealed that she had been strangled to death, after which the Tilak Nagar police were informed and a case of murder was registered against unknown persons.

“We visited the house and found that a lot of things were misplaced, as if someone had gone through the contents of the house. It was suggestive of an attempt at stealing and we suspected that the murder was a theft gone wrong. We then started making inquiries in the area, questioning neighbours and others who were frequent visitors to the house,” said an officer with the Tilak Nagar police.

As part of these inquiries, the police picked up Hazara (30) on Tuesday morning, who stays in the same locality with his family. The police said that Hazara seemed frightened during their inquiries, which aroused their suspicion and on being questioned intensively, he broke down and confessed to have killed Beauty.

“Hazara entered the house when Beauty and her brother were out playing and began looking for money to steal, when Beauty returned home. As she knew Hazara well, he was afraid that she would tell her parents about his attempted theft. Hence, he strangled her and then arranged her body with its head inside a bucket filled with water. He has said during interrogation that he wanted to make it look like she was playing in water and choked to death in the process,” said Police Inspector T S Surulkar, Tilak Nagar police station.

Hazara was placed under arrest following his confession and will be produced in court on Wednesday, the police said.

Crime Patrol: To fake death, RTI activist burned homeless man alive in car (Episode 428, 429 on 31st Oct & 2nd Nov 2014)

PART 1

PART 2

The Inside Story
NOIDA: RTI activist Chandra Mohan Sharma, in trying to fake his own death, burned an unsuspecting homeless vagabond alive after he failed to strangle him, police claimed on Monday at the end of his remand period.

After grilling him for two days, the police claimed to have stitched together the sequence of events from Chandra Mohan getting out of the Honda Siel factory — where he worked — at night to him taking a bus to New Delhi railway station to catch a train to Bangalore, where he lived under an assumed identity with a 25-year-old woman from Greater Noida. The woman, Preeti Nagar, was arrested on Saturday as a co-conspirator in the case.

On Monday, the police produced 38-year-old Chandra Mohan at a court in Greater Noida amid tight security. The court remanded him in judicial custody, after which he was taken to the district prison at Luksar in Greater Noida. Chandra Mohan was arrested on Thursday after the police tracked him down in Bangalore.

"We tried to recreate the chronology of events on the night of May 1 when Chandra Mohan was supposed to have 'burned' to death," said Greater Noida SP Brijesh Kumar Singh.

According to the police, officials drove Chandra Mohan from the Honda Siel factory on the Surajpur-Kasna Road to the spot where he killed the vagabond by setting the car on fire and from there to Pari Chowk, from where he caught a bus to the railway station. The police clocked 70 minutes.

"Chandra Mohan told us how he left the factory at 11.10pm, then drove to Ansal Plaza Mall near the Noida-Greater Noida Expressway. From there he lured the mentally unsound person, whom he had identified and befriended a few days earlier, into the car by giving him food," said Samarjeet Singh, the investigating officer.

"He drove him to an isolated spot near the Eldeco crossing, where Videsh, Chandra Mohan's brother-in-law, reached on a motorcycle. The two then tried to strangle the man with a belt but he did not die. The duo then tied him with the belt after putting him in the driver's seat, splashed petrol and escaped from one of the rear doors of the car, before burning him alive," Singh said.

Chandra Mohan also left his mobile phone and office keys inside the car to lend a touch of authenticity. The police claimed he revealed where he had thrown the can used to store the petrol, which he allegedly used to burn the mentally unsound victim and his own car. The police recovered the petrol can from between bushes a few meters from the scene of the crime.

Meanwhile, Preeti Nagar has been remanded in judicial custody. The police said they have so far not found any evidence to indicate the involvement of Chandra Mohan's wife Savita. "We have not ruled out her involvement though," Singh said.
