शांति की माँ और बहन एक दिन गौर करते हैं की उसके पिता ने कई दिन से नशा नहीं किया है। उन्हें इस बात से ताज्जुब होता है की हर समय नशे में धुत रहने वाला इन्सान इतने दिन से ठीक क्यूँ है। एक दिन सुबह शांति का बाप किसी से मिल कर आता है और बताता है की उसको कुछ मजदूरी का काम मिल गया है और शांति को अपने साथ ले जाना चाहता है क्युकी काम में एक लड़की की भी ज़रुरत है। माँ के मना करने पर भी वो शांति को ही ले जाता है ये समझा कर की शांति अब खुद कमाएगी और अपने पैरों पर खड़ी होगी। उसकी माँ बोलती है की शांति अभी छोटी है, बड़ी बहन को ले जाओ तो वो नहीं मानता है।
