Crime Patrol: Boy, 11, abducted for Rs 1.5 crore ransom is returned to his family after 12-hour manhunt (Episode 332 on 18 Jan 2014)

The Inside Story
Hours after the 11-year-old son of a garment trader was kidnapped from central Delhi’s Rajinder Nagar area by two property dealers for a ransom of Rs. 1.5 crore, the boy was rescued safely from Haryana’s Rewari by the Delhi Police. While one of the accused, Harpal Singh Sodhi, 42, has been arrested, the alleged mastermind Harpreet Singh is untraceable.Police said Harpreet hatched the plan to kidnap the victim after he came to know that the victim’s family has a huge amount of money in cash to buy a shop in Rajinder Nagar.Known to the victim family for the past six years, Harpreet was talking to the victim’s mother when he came to know about their plan to buy the property. She apparently told him that they had sold off a plot to buy the shop in Rajinder Nagar and have R80 lakh in cash ready for the deal. Alok Kumar, deputy commissioner of police (central), said the matter came to their notice at around 7pm on Saturday, almost 50 minutes after the boy, Harneet, was pulled inside a car metres away from his house.

“Harneet had gone to a nearby shop to get his father’s phone account recharged. But, when he did not return home the family went out in his search,” said Kumar. The family found the mobile cover lying on the road.

At around 6.41 pm, while his family was desperately looking for him, Harneet’s mother, Jaswinder Kaur, received a call on her mobile phone and the caller, who identified himself as Khan, claimed that her son was in his custody.

“The caller threatened her that her son will be shot if they are not paid a ransom of R1.5 crore by 11 am on Sunday. The family immediately informed the police,” said Kumar. The kidnappers made two more calls.

Teams of the central district police swung into action and with the help of technical surveillance traced Harpal to his office in Rajasthan’s Bhiwadi from where he was making the ransom calls using a new SIM card. The police also established that Harpal and Harpreet were both in the same area when the kidnapping took place.

“Harpal was interrogated and at his instance the victim was rescued from Harpreet’s white Maruti Swift car, parked near the Rewari Railway station — 25 km away from Bhiwadi. Harpreet had abandoned the victim and his car, as he somehow got to know that we were coming there,” said Rajesh Deo, additional DCP (central).

Crime Patrol: Uttarakhand BJP demands CBI probe into the murder of former secretary of minister (Episode 331 on 17 Jan 2013)

Inside Story
DEHRADUN: Uttarakhand government on Wednesday increased security in all 13 districts after a number of BJP workers and office-bearers held demonstrations and burnt effigies of chief minister Vijay Bahuguna and other top government functionaries including agriculture minister Harak Singh Rawat.

The protestors demanded a recommendation to the centre to order a CBI probe into the murder of Harak's former private secretary Yudhvir Singh Rawat's murder in Dehradun on August 8 by four contract killers allegedly at the behest of a woman identified as Sudha Patwal.

A senior IPS officer in Dehradun said 32-year-old Patwal was arrested from Dehradun on Monday and confessed her role. She denied allegations that she was close to Harak and said that she knew him as Congress worker and not more than that.

A senior police officer said during her interrogation, Patwal confessed to having hatched a conspiracy to gun down Yudhvir after he declined to return Rs 14 lakh paid to him a couple of weeks ago to seek admission of a student in a state government medical college during this academic session.

A police officer who interrogated Patwal said she also confessed that several fake admissions in state government medical colleges at Srinagar and Haldwani after paying hefty amounts allegedly through middlemen over the years.

Members of governing bodies of these colleges denied the allegation. "This is absolutely baseless charges against state government medical colleges as such admissions are not just possible," a member of governing body from Srinagar Medical College said.

Harak is also the minister for department of medical education. He dismissed the allegation against the department saying he is ready for any probe into what he described as "baseless and unfounded" allegations against the department. "These allegations aim at tarnishing my image," said Rawat.

Dehradun SSP Khurna said police have also arrested three contract killers who were allegedly hired by Patwal to kill Yudhvir. "We are trying to interrogate all arrested to get more leads," said a senior police officer.

The state-wide stir was organized by BJP state unit led by state chief Tirath Singh Rawat and leader of opposition Ajay Bhatt.

Hundreds of BJP workers also courted arrest and raised anti-government slogans throughout the day to protest against attempts by state government to shield those actually responsible for murder by trying to get the case hushed up by all means.

"The way chief minister Bahuguna refused to recommend for a CBI probe into Yudhvir's murder has indicated that government is bent upon shielding actual culprits responsible for crime," Tirath said.

The inside story
MUMBAI: Two men were arrested on Wednesday for allegedly killing an employee of a garment factory whose body was found stuffed in a suitcase at Malad (W). The accused, Mohammad Alam Khan and Sikander Khan, had a financial dispute with the 34-year-old victim, Alam Ansari. They were nabbed from Kolkata after their cellphone location was tracked down. Their third associate, Sheru, is still on the run.

The trio has been booked on the charges of murder and destruction of evidence.

Ansari had a live-in relationship with a woman called Najma. She had a daughter, Soni, from her previous marriage. Soni and her husband Mohammad Alam stayed in Malwani. Najma's brother, Sheru, and her nephew, Sikandar, too stayed with the couple. "Mohammad Alam and Sikandar were earlier arrested for their involvement in chain-snatching cases. While they were in the lock-up, Soni had given Ansari Rs 16,000 to arrange for their bail. But Ansari allegedly usurped the cash which irked the duo," said DCP Mahesh Patil.

After getting out of the lock-up, Mohammad Alam plotted with Sikandar and Sheru to bump off Ansari. On October 5, the trio invited Ansari for a liquor party to their house. They forced Ansari to drink so much that he passed out. The accused then slit his throat with a razor and bludgeoned him with tiles. They bundled the body into a suitcase and abandoned it near a school on DP Road.
