Devraj, who has been accused of killing four children and then fleeing his village in Haryana two years ago, never used a mobile phone and kept shifting across state lines to avoid detection, the Gurgaon Police said on Thursday.
After the 23-year-old was finally arrested on Tuesday, the police found the
skeletons of the four children when the accused took them to the site where he
had allegedly dumped the bodies.
“To avoid being traced, the accused never kept a mobile phone and kept moving across states,” said Assistant Commissioner of Police (Crime), Rajesh Kumar Chechi.
Police claim that during questioning, Devraj disclosed that he had killed the children — including his nephew, niece and two of their friends — as he was fed up by constant taunting from his brother-in-law.
According to police, the accused often fought with his brother-in-law, father of the murdered brother-sister duo, who taunted him about not having a job.
“The accused befriended a girl in a village in UP’s Aligarh and eloped with her. He then came to Hariya Hara village in Haryana and married the girl, after which he started living with his sister. This did not go down well with her sister’s husband, and they often fought,” said Chechi.
After the incident, Devraj, along with his wife, fled to Gwalior in Madhya Pradesh and then to Dattawali village in Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh, said the police.
The parents of the brother-sister duo as well as the parents of the two other murdered girls left Hariya Hera Village after the children went missing.
“These were contractual labourers working in brick kilns. After the incident, the families moved back to their native village in Uttar Pradesh,” the ACP added.
However, the parents were called by the Gurgaon police to identify the remains of their children.
“The clothes have been identified by them,” said Chechi. The police will take DNA samples from the parents to conclusively identify the children, after which the skeletons will be handed over to them for last rites.
The police may also send a team, along with the accused, to UP to gather evidence related to the murder, including the knife used in the murders and the clothes worn by him on that day, said sources.
