KANPUR: Some unidentified persons killed wife and daughter of a bank employee and looted cash and jewellery worth over Rs three lakh from their residence at Naubasta area here, police said.
Ram Murari Gupta, a cashier with Reserve Bank of India, returned home from work yesterday evening and found his wife Manju and daughter Chetna murdered with their hands and legs tied, they said.
The almirah was found to be open with the cash and jewellery missing, they said.
Police suspect the involvement of close family members in the incident.
Meanwhile, the bodies have been sent for a postmortem and an investigation is on to nab the culprits.

Double murder in Kanpur, cash, jewellery missing
The wife and daughter of a treasurer in Reserve Bank of India were murdered in their Awas Vikas Sector B residence in Hanspuram on Wednesday evening. The assailants had decamped with Rs 40,000 in cash and jewellery worth Rs 3 lakh.
Ram Murari Gupta, who had gone for work in the morning, discovered the bodies when he returned home.
The main gate was open. "Entering one room, I found the body of my daughter Chetna (30) on the ground, her hands were tied with a rope," he said. The body of his wife Manju (52) was in the other room. Both appeared to have been strangled with a black dupatta.
Gupta called up the police. Later, he discovered that the cash and jewellery were missing.
A case of murder and loot has been registered at the Naubasta police station. The police suspects the involvement of a person known to the family, but no arrest has been made yet.
Circle Officer, Govind Nagar, Prashant Kumar said Gupta and his family had been staying in the house for the last 10 years.
Gupta's son Vivek — employed with a private firm — had shifted to Ghaziabad after his marriage in November 2008. A dispute had begun in the family after the marriage. "His in-laws had been provoking him against us and so Vivek decided to stay away," said Gupta. The police raided the Gujjaini residence of Vivek's wife Mani, and questioned her family over the double murder.
The ASP (Kanpur West), Mohit Gupta, said: "Prima facie it appears that someone known to the family was involved."
Four teams have been formed to work on the case. "They have contacted the neighbours and other locals to collect information about the people present in the vicinity on Wednesday," he added.
