The Malwani police have arrested a 40-year-old woman for allegedly forcing her 15-year-old daughter into prostitution at the age of 10. The police have also arrested the pimp, who allegedly used to send her to clients.
According to the Malwani police, they were approached by Childline, an NGO that works in collaboration with the Mumbai Police against child abuse, on Tuesday and informed them that they had received information about a teenage girl being held in confinement by a pimp.
The police then conducted a raid on the house named by Childline, located at gate number five, Malwani, where the 15-year-old girl was being held in the kitchen.
The police said that the girl was staying in the house with a woman identified as Salma Sheikh (43), who would allegedly send her to clients with her mother’s consent.
“The girl’s mother was staying in Pune and had left the victim, who is her eldest daughter, with Sheikh. She was staying in Pune with her two younger children. She had remarried around three years ago after the death of her first husband,” said Senior Police Inspector Prakash Patil, Malwani police station.
The victim, in her statement, has told the police that she was sent to live with Salma at the age of 10, and had been forced into prostitution. “I can no longer live with my mother. I want to study, get a decent job and earn a living,” the girl said. Sheikh as well as the girl’s mother have been arrested. The girl has been sent for medical examination.
