Teenager kidnapped from Delhi, sold to Haryana ‘groom’ (Episode 51 on 21 Oct 2011

The Inside Story
Police arrested three persons on Monday from Northeast Delhi for allegedly indulging in human trafficking and rescued a 14-year old girl whom they had reportedly sold for Rs 70,000 to some persons in Haryana.

Randhir Singh (32), Aashiya (50) and Sanjeeda alias Savitri (44), allegedly used to sell girls in Haryana.

"The victim lived in Seelampur and had gone to Khajuri Khas to meet her friend, but lost her way. When she was asking for directions, the main supplier, Sanjeeda, saw her and lured her on some pretext. The accused took the victim to Shahbad in Kurukshetra district," said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Northeast), Sanjay Jain.

He said the accused sold the teenager to the "groom" Randhir for Rs 70,000.

The incident came to light after her father told police that he suspected that someone had lured his her. She had been reported missing in July this year.

Officials managed to trace the accused after interrogating a few suspects.

"Randhir had approached Aashiya to purchase a girl as there is an adverse sex ratio in Haryana and the practice of purchasing girls for marriage is prevalent," Jain said.

The teenager was rescued and two of the accused nabbed from the Haryana village. Sanjeeda was arrested on Monday from Sonipat.

According to police, her husband Jaipal used to supply girls in Haryana. After his murder five months ago by his stepson, she took over the business.

"The accused used to visit bus stands and railway stations and look for lonely girls who had either fled from their houses due to domestic abuse or employment issues. They used to influence them with false promises and subsequently sell them in Haryana," Jain said.
