Woman sarpanch killed for lighting mother’s pyre

Village sarpanch Geeta was fulfilling Surjubai’s last wish

A woman sarpanch has lost her life for fulfilling her mother’s last wish. On March 31, Geeta Prahlad, sarpanch of Mohda village in Raipur district of Chhattisgarh, defied tradition and lit the pyre of her mother Surjubai. Although Surjubai had a son, she wanted Geeta to perform the last rites.

Two days later, on Thursday, Geeta was killed by her elder brother, Santosh, alias Tejram Verma, and his younger son, Piyush. The duo hacked her to death for denying a son his right.

“Santosh threw my grandmother out from his home 22 years ago. My mother was looking after her all these years. He did not perform his duty as a son when my grandmother was alive but killed my mother for doing something which every daughter should do — fulfil her mother’s last wish,” said Kushboo, Geeta’s 19-year-old daughter who was with her mother during the attack. Geeta’s son Vikram tried to save his mother and was injured.

Asked if Geeta had any property dispute with her brother, her husband Aniruddha Singh Prahlad said she had not claimed any property. “Geeta’s act might have hurt Santosh’s ego. He shouted after murdering my wife that it was entirely his right to perform Surjubai’s last rites,” Mr. Singh told The Hindu.

After killing Geeta, Santosh and Piyush attacked her younger sister Seeta and were hunting for Aniruddha Singh before the police arrested them. “Santosh already held a grudge against his sister for being more assertive and successful in life. She was elected the village sarpanch two months ago and had ensured that her mother was looked after properly. He has confessed to his crime,” said Inspector Alim Khan of Dharsinwa police station covering Mohda village.

Crime Patrol: Three people were arrested on Wednesday evening for allegedly murdering (Episode 555 on 11th Sep, 2015)

The Inside Story

PUNE: Three people were arrested on Wednesday evening for allegedly murdering a 19-year-old youth on August 14.

The body of Mayur Pathare of Kharadi was found on the railway tracks at Mundhwa. The government railway police (GRP) had registered a case of accidental death, but the identity of the victim could not be ascertained. Since there were no claimants to the body, the GRP cremated it.

The murder came to light while investigating a 'missing persons' complaint lodged by Pathare's parents, said inspector Vishwanath Ghanwat (crime) of the Yerawada police station.

The police have identified the suspects as Sachin Dagdu Kolhe (22) and Mahesh Chandrakant Agarkar (19), both residents of Vadgaonsheri, and Avinash Dilip Gawli (25) of Kharadi.

According to the police, Pathare was in love with a girl, but she deserted him and fell in love with Agarkar. Pathare threatened Agarkar and asked him to discontinue his relation with the girl. Pathare also thrashed Agarkar on August 10.

On the day of the murder, Pathare had asked Agarkar to meet him at Mundhwa bridge at 6.30 pm for a discussion. But Agarkar suspected some foul play and entered into a criminal conspiracy with Kolhe and reached the spot with a rope and a knife. The trio had a heated discussion over the woman, and Agarkar and Kolhe thrashed Pathare and strangled him with the rope. Kolhe attacked Pathare with the knife, killing him on the spot, the police said.

Ghanwat told TOI that the duo took three gold chains of 11 tolas, Rs 2,000 and two cell phones from Pathare and dumped his body on a railway track in Mundhwa, which was run over by a train.

The suspects sold the cell phones through Gawli. However, while probing the 'missing person' complaint, constable Yashwant Khandare detained them as investigations had revealed that they had been in possession of the cell phones.

During interrogation, Agarkar and Kolhe admitted to murdering Pathare over a dispute relating to the girl. Gawli was arrested on charges of disposing of the cell phones.

The victim's relatives identified Pathare by his photograph and clothes.

The suspects were arrested by assistant police inspector Manoj Khandagle and policemen Kiran Neil and Rajaram Gogre under the guidance of senior inspector Deepak Sawant.

Sub-inspector D T Karche has registered a case against the suspects for committing an offence under sections 120 (b) (criminal conspiracy), 302 (murder), 201 (destroying evidence), 394 (robbery) and 411 (selling stolen property) read with 34 (common intention) of the Indian Penal Code.

MUMBAI: The domestic help who has been arrested for murdering the wife of a businessman in her plush duplex flat last week, had sent the building security guard to a nearby shop to buy some snacks so that he could sneak in his brother. The siblings had planned to rob the family as they were deep

in debt.

The accused, Dilip Mandal, had also tried to waylaid the police by naming two other domestic helps in the building as his aides to protect his brother, but his lie was exposed during sustained interrogation, said a police officer.

The victim, Minoti Parikh (50), lived in Guru Kripa building with her husband, Ajay, and daughter. The family had hired Dilip two months ago on a recommendation of a previous domestic help. The Parikhs were one of the promoters of Zandu Pharma before they sold their stake and ventured into a new business.

On seeing Minoti Parikh keep valuables in the house, Dilip allegedly hatched a plan to rob them and roped his elder brother, Ghanshyam, who was employed as a domestic help with a Walkeshwar family and had been recently fired. The Mandals wanted to repay a loan taken from a moneylender and also wanted to spend on a relative's wedding.

On February 23, after Dilip told his brother that Minoti was alone in the flat, the latter reached there. But he didn't enter in the building as there was a security guard at the gate. He informed Dilip about it, said a police officer.

Minoti was watching television when Dilip told her that he was going downstairs for some time and requested her not to close the door, said the officer. She could not see the door from where she was sitting, added the officer. Dilip gave the security guard Rs 100 to buy snacks for him from a nearby shop, and sneaked Ghanshyam into the flat, the officer added.

Ghanshyam hid in a bathroom, while Dilip went into the kitchen. After a while, he told Minoti that cooking gas was not working properly. When she entered the kitchen, Dilip grabbed her and Ghanshyam joined in. Minoti resisted them and screamed for help but they strangled her. They did not realize that she had died, the officer said. They tied her hands and legs, collected valuables worth Rs 33 lakh and fled before the security guard returned.

The police said Dilip went to a relative's place in Haryana, while Ghanshyam took the valuables and went separate ways.

The Juhu police caught Ghanshyam first with the valuables and his interrogation led them to Dilip. API Deepak Sawant of the crime branch unit 9, along with the Juhu police, later arrested Dilip from Haryana.

Juhu murder: Cops to question duo, suspect more accomplices

After the Juhu police along with officers of the crime branch's unit 9 arrested two accused for allegedly robbing, plotting and executing the murder of a 50-year-old woman, the police suspect the involvement of more people in the murder.

After the Juhu police along with officers of the crime branch's unit 9 arrested two accused for allegedly robbing, plotting and executing the murder of a 50-year-old woman, the police suspect the involvement of more people in the murder.

The prime accused, 19-year-old Dilip Mandal, was caught in Haryana, and his brother Shyam, 23, was caught in Delhi. The duo, who got a transit remand from a court in Delhi, will be produced before a magistrate court in Mumbai on Friday.

The duo decided against going to their hometown in Bihar, and fled to Delhi instead, all the while knowing they were being chased by the police. Despite this, they kept their phones active, to receive updates on police movement via their friends and media. This in turn, helped the police trace their locations.

DCP Vinayak Deshmukh said that preliminary interrogations were conducted in Delhi and the police believe the duo had more accomplices in the murder. He added: "We may have arrest one or two more people in the coming days. This can be confirmed only after the brothers are grilled after being brought to Mumbai."

He added: "We are also questioning the suspects after Dilip said that there were two others involved in the act." The suspects are also believed to be domestic helps working in the same building with whom the accused were in constant touch with.

According to officers, Shyam is the main conspirator and was allegedly instructing his brother in plotting the murder. Shyam used to work as a domestic help in Walkeshwar but was fired from his job a few weeks ago, said the police.

DCP Deshmukh said: "Dilip had spotted the family keeping jewellery inside the cupboards after attending a family wedding a few days ago and informed Shyam. We believe that Dilip and one or two other accomplices strangulated the lady after which he handed over a large part of the booty to Shyam."

Following this, they went their separate ways. While Dilip took a train to Haryana at 7 pm by Punjab Mail express, Shyam took a 23:30 train to Delhi.

After tracing their locations, the police formed three teams who went to Delhi, UP and Bihar, and nabbed them on Wednesday afternoon from Delhi and Sonipat in Haryana.

The deceased, Minoti Parikh was allegedly robbed and strangled on the third floor of her residence in Guru Kripa building in JVPD on Monday. Dilip fled with Rs1 lakh, and diamonds and gold worth Rs33.5 lakh after committing the murder. Her husband Ajay and their daughter were at work during that time. Parikh's son and daughter-in-law live in another building in the same area.

Mumbai: After a 13-year-old Mumbai school student's bone-chilling letter
revealed her horrific ordeal about being raped by her father for six years, the
police on Friday arrested the accused.

The minor girl in her letter also had written about how her mother kept mum over
the years of sexual abuse.

According to a report published in a leading daily Mid-Day, the shocking
incident came to light after the victim, a class VII student, gave a letter to
her teacher which read, “My father raped me and my mother is not helping.”

The teacher, who initially had no idea what the letter read, was visibly shaken
after going through its content. Having realised that it was a desperate appeal
for help from the poor girl, the teacher then sought assistance from a local NGO
in Vashi.

The NGO later got a rape case registered against the girl's parents.

“My father raped me in front of my mother. After this, my mother would offer me
some pills. He has been raping me since I was seven years old. Despite
complaining to my mother, she refused to help me,” the teenage girl alleged in
the letter.

The girl’s 45-year-old father is a fruit vendor who used to rape her since she
was 7-year-old.

“Whenever my brothers weren’t at home, my father would take advantage of the
opportunity and rape me inside my house, in front of my mother. I had complained
to my mother several times, but she never helped me,” she had told the
police.

The now 13-year-old girl told Vashi police that she had also informed her
17-year-old sister about the assault. The police, after primary investigation
into the matter, said that the elder sister doesn’t stay with the family, and
she too has been a victim of the father’s sexual assault.

Interestingly, the girl was able to muster courage after receiving a counselling
session at school, a police officer from Vashi police station, said requesting
anonymity.

Though the police questioned the girl's mother, but she had categorically denied
the charges made by the girl against her father. Shockingly, the woman claimed
that she came to know about the sexual assaults only a fortnight ago, after
which she scolded her husband and asked him to stay away from the teenager.

With the local police beginning its probe into the case, the girl is now put up
at a children’s home owned by the NGO.

A case has been registered against both the parents under Section 376 (rape) of
the Indian Penal Code, along with Section 5(L)(N) of the Protection of Children
from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012.

Meanwhile, the father of the girl has now been arrested.

“ We have arrested the father, but are investigating as to what exact role her
mother had to play. The survivor has told us that her mother has offered her
some medicine. We will verify what medicines were given to her,” Deputy
Commissioner of Police Shahaji Umap ( Navi Mumbai Zone I) was quoted as saying
in the report.

Once these details are confirmed, we will arrest the mother too, the official
said. The police officials investigating the case believe these medicines were
contraceptive pills, which the mother offered to her daughter to avoid
pregnancy.
