The Inside Story

Baby Falak taken out from ICU, shifted to children's ward at AIIMS

Doctors at the AIIMS Trauma Centre, attending on her since the past 45 days, said Falak will be discharged soon if she continues to show improvement in her medical condition. "We shifted her to the ward today. She is doing fine. We have removed the plaster from her hands and she is moving her limbs. She cries badly when anyone goes close to her. Another two to three days and we can declare her fit to be discharged. Sadly, we do not have the legal right to discharge her as she has no takers yet," said Dr Deepak Agarwal, who has been attending on the girl child since she was admitted to the AIIMS Trauma Centre on January 18.

Moved by Baby Falak's plight, Indians as well people from the US and Canada have approached doctors, expressing their desire to adopt her. "We have received a lot of mails but we have no right to hand her over to anyone. It all depends on the government

authorities to decide for her," Dr Agarwal said.

Baby Falak was brought to the hospital with severe head injuries, broken arms, bite marks all over her body and cheeks branded with hot iron. Doctors have conducted five life saving surgeries on her. "Even if we discharge her, the tracheostomy and the food

pipe will stay in her body to help her," Dr Agarwal said.

New Delhi, Feb 13 (IANS) The case of two-year-old battered baby Falak, who is battling for life at a city hospital, is a stark example of failure of child protection machinery in the country, apex child rights panel chief Shanta Sinha said here Monday.

"It is the failure of child protection machinery when a baby is abandoned and left to struggle for life. The state has responsibility and implementation of social welfare schemes needs to be taken care of," Sinha, who heads the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR), said at a national seminar on 'child's right to a family'.

The seminar was organised by the non-governmental organisation (NGO) SOS Children's village India.

Falak was brought to AIIMS by a teenager Jan 18 with fractured skull, bruises and human bite marks all over her tiny frame. The girl who claimed to be her mother is now in a juvenile home.

Nine people, including key accused Rajkumar who had handed over the baby to the juvenile, have been arrested in the case.

According to a study done by the SOS children's village, 5 percent of children under the age of 18 experienced death of one or both parents, while 0.3 percent children have experienced death of both parents.

"Family has been the locus of major social change. Quality of parenting and livelihood that the child is given have a major role in shaping the child," said SOS Children's Village secretary general Rakesh Jinsi.

Crime Patrol: Priya Parekh's Mysterious Death - Episode 87 - 24th February 2012

Priya Parekh residing in Gujarat, Ahemdabad lived with her mother and sister, She was the only earning member in her house as she lost her father 5 years back and was extremely upset in her office as she was missing him on his death anniversary. Priya's office friend Nidhi tries to cheer her as she was upset and also explains her to get married as soon as she can later, a major incident takes place as Pankaj and Priya's bike mets with an accident and Priya dies. Cops doubt on Pankaj. Is it an accident or a murder? Who killed Priya?

The Inside Story
Dec 18, 2010, AHMEDABAD

Police finally got their man in a case that remained unsolved for a little over a year. What was initially made out to be a case of accidental death - a girl strangled by her dupatta caught in a motorbike's wheel - has turned out to be rape and murder.

Forensic investigators detected the crime and helped police nab the killer. "The postmortem and forensic reports have finally confirmed our suspicions about Jadav's story. He was arrested on Sunday and produced him before a court. Jadav is now on a four-day remand with us," said V K Zala, inspector of Sola police station.

Jadav, 30, has confessed that he had taken Puja to farms near Heritage House on Shilaj road and raped her. When she threatened to expose him, he strangled her with a nylon rope. He then tied the body to himself and drove to Shilaj-Thaltej road and then called his friends.

On December 16m, Puja Nayak, a resident of Gujarat Housing Board Colony in Gota who worked at a BPO, was brought dead to Sola Civil Hospital by her colleague Rakesh Jadav on SG Highway. Jadav told police, Puja left her workplace early because she was not feeling well and then went to a colleague, Dhara's home nearby. Later, Dhara requested him to drop Puja home since it was getting late.

Jadav claimed that at 8.50 pm on the Thaltej-Shilaj road Puja's dupatta got entangled in the bike's wheel and she was strangled to death. Jadav then called up friends and took her to Sola Civil Hospital where she was declared brought dead.

"The post mortem report said that the strangulation marks on the victim's neck were much smaller than a mark that would be made by a dupatta. This means that she was strangled with a thinner object. Second, the doctors found semen from her body parts. These factors clearly raised suspicion on Jadav's statement," said Zala.

Akbar prefers Hindu guardian to Muslim mother

For more detail please visit this post
Lucknow, Aug 12, 2011:

‘I do not wish to go back to my mother,’ 12-year-old Akbar says, looking up with love at his foster father Aiku Lal who has brought him up like his own since he found him sobbing and abandoned in a park eight years ago. The boy’s mother is fighting a custody battle in the Supreme Court.

Reacting to the petition moved by his mother Shahnaz in the apex court, Akbar told IANS: ‘I just do not wish to go back to my mother who is not in a position to even continue my studies.’

Lal, who has been not just a guardian, friend, philosopher and guide, but also looked after him as a real parent, shivers at the very thought of parting company with the boy. After all, Lal’s life has been centred around Akbar since 2003, when he found him in a park overlooking the tiny tea stall that he runs for his livelihood in Lucknow’s Qaiser Bagh area.

Significantly, all arguments raised by the mother against her child’s stay with a third person belonging to another religion were trashed by the Allahabad High Court.

‘When there are inter-caste and inter-religion marriages, I see nothing wrong in the guardianship of a Muslim child by a Hindu, specially since the child dotes on him and does not want to leave him,’ ruled the high court Judge Barkat Ali Zaidi, whose verdict has now been challenged in the Supreme Court.

The court had taken serious view of the fact that neither Akbar’s father nor mother lodged a report with the police about their son when he went missing from Allahabad.

It was on a winter evening of 2003 that Akbar, then four, was out with his father on the streets of Allahabad and the father decided to halt at a country liquor shop. Apparently Akbar slipped away and realisation dawned on the father only after reaching his home.

No one knows how the boy found his way to the Qaiser Bagh Baradari park in Lucknow, where Lal spotted him in an abandoned condition, sobbing.

Lal gave the child a new life, but made it a point to ensure that not just Akbar’s name but his religion remained unchanged. Akbar is clearly growing up as a true Muslim under the guardianship of a Hindu foster father, who gets him the best of everything he can afford.

The rustic tea-stall owner got Akbar to learn his Quranic lessons and to offer daily ‘namaz’. And for his formal education, Akbar walks down to the close-by Mumtaz Intermediate College where he is a student of Class 7. This unique father ensures that the boy goes to school in well-ironed uniform every day.

Asked why he chose to remain a bachelor, Aiku Lal said: ‘Well, I was always apprehensive that a Hindu woman may not agree to bring up my Muslim son, therefore I made up my mind to remain a bachelor.’

Looking at the father with a smile on his face and twinkle in his eyes, Akbar asks: ‘Now see, don’t we make a complete family?’

But Aiku Lal’s only dilemma today is – what would he do if the Supreme Court were to order Akbar’s restoration to his biological mother, who is now insistent on getting back his custody.

‘I am only praying to god that the court does not compel us to part; I know I will have to abide by the court order but that would be the end of my purpose in life,’ he avers with tears in his eyes.

The Inside Story

Date: 2011-12-09 Place: Mumbai

Cops arrested 24-year-old for threatening her brother's 17-year-old friend-- who owed her Rs 1,000 -- with a rape frame-up if he didn't pay up

The Borivli police arrested a 24-year-old woman on Wednesday for allegedly abetting an SSC student to commit suicide. Cops said the woman blackmailed the boy by threatening to slap a rape case on him if did not return an amount of Rs 1,000 which he had borrowed from her brother 15 days ago.

According to investigators, the accused identified as Jyoti Pillai works for a private firm in Malad. Couple of weeks back, her younger brother Ganesh had taken Rs 1,000 from her salary money kept at their Gorai residence to lend it to his friend Ritesh Singh (17), who said he needed the money to buy medicines for his ailing grandmother.

Cash missing

Scared to death:

Ritesh Singh hanged himself after Jyoti

Pillai threatened him that she

would slap false rape charges on him

On Monday, when Jyoti opened her cupboard to take some cash, she found Rs 1,000 missing. When she asked Ganesh, he told her that Ritesh had borrowed it and would return it in a few days. An irritated Jyoti landed at Ritesh's house on Tuesday to demand her dues. At the time, Ritesh's parents were not at home.

"Only Ritesh and his grandmother were in the house when Jyoti went there and started abusing Ritesh. So he and his grandmother gave whatever cash they had on them at that time, which was around Rs 280," said Senior Police Inspector Bhagwan Chate.

But Jyoti wanted the entire amount and she threatened Ritesh that she would tell his parents and even slap rape charges on him. "Jyoti told Ritesh she would approach the police and register a rape case against him," added Chate.

Daunted by her threats, a susceptible Ritesh hanged himself at his residence soon after Jyoti left. The police have not found any suicide note near the body but Ritesh's friends told the police about Jyoti's visit and threats. "We have arrested Jyoti on the charges of abetment to suicide. We are further investigating the case," said Chate.

After waiting for several months following her husband's death, Neha Tahiliani
realised the Rs 12 lakh had been withdrawn by crooks using fake identity; four
arrested

For more than three months, a Dahisar-based widow waited for her late
husband's life insurance money, before she learnt that the cheque of Rs 12
lakh had been encashed in her name and she had been duped.

Dahisar police have arrested four people including a clerk at Life Insurance
Corporation (LIC) for the scam. One accused remains absconding.

The crooks: (Clockwise) Yasmin Khan, Kaustubh Das, Om Shrivastav

and Sudhir Ghadi

According to the cops, the woman Neha Tahiliani, whose husband Harish had died
in September 2011, had claimed his life insurance money from LIC.

On October 21, 2011 the company had released the cheque in Neha's name. A few
days later Neha received a receipt by post at her house stating that the
cheque had been delivered to her.

Neha approached the local LIC office to complain that she in fact had not
received the cheque.

When LIC officers checked their computers, they learnt that the cheque had
been dispatched in Neha's name and the money had also been withdrawn at the
Central Bank of India in Dahisar (East).

LIC then approached the Dahisar police station and registered a complaint.

>"I was astonished on getting the receipt, because I hadn't received any
cheque. I then approached the local LIC office and the representatives there
told me that the money had already been withdrawn from my Central Bank of
India account. I told them that I had no account with the bank.

I then went to file a complaint at the Santacruz police station, who asked me
to approach the Dahisar police as the particular bank branch falls under their
jurisdiction. Finally, LIC lodged a complaint at Dahisar police station.
Though my husband's death cannot be compensated for, I now hope to receive the
money as soon as possible, so that I can move on with my life," Neha told MiD
DAY.

Phoney connection

Dahisar police officers investigating the case said that when they inquired at
the bank, they found that an account in the name of Neha Tahiliani had been
created through which the money had been withdrawn.

On further investigation, police officers found that the cheque had been
issued on the submission of photocopies of PAN card and ration card. The photo
on the PAN card however did not match Neha's.

The police then alerted their informers through whom they found that the
woman, whose photo had been used, stayed at Mira Road.

The police detained the woman, identified as Yasmin Khan (24), who told the
cops that she had been approached by two men Kaustubh Das (28) and Om
Shrivastav (29), who forged her documents and asked her to withdraw the money
for them.

"We later found that the two cheats had been arrested by the Gujarat police
for creating bogus documents and withdrawing another LIC cheque," said API
Pravin Rane from Dahisar police station.

In the net

On January 14, Dahisar police arrested Kaustubh and Om through whom they
learnt that a clerk working at LIC, identified as Sudhir Ghadi, had stolen the
cheque and given it to the duo.

The police officers said that the cheats had an arrangement with Ghadi who
used to supply them with stolen LIC cheques. Then by creating a fake account
in the name of the recipient, using details of an associate,

the crooks would claim the cheque and withdraw the insurance amount. Kaustubh,
Om, Sudhir and Yasmin are now in police custody, while an aide of Sudhir who
delivered the cheques to the cheats is still at large.

She'll get the money: LIC

Sanjay Satam, manager of LIC's Santacruz branch said, "The victim had come to
us for the insurance amount. We told her that her money had already been
claimed and transferred to her Central Bank account. She however denied having
received the money, as she had no account in Central Bank. She went to
Santacruz police station to register her complaint who in turn diverted her to
Dahisar from where the cash was withdrawn. Neha Tahiliani will receive the
full amount in a few days."

NDTV Coverage on Manipur girl rape case in delhi jan 2012 (Crime Patrol Episode 83 - 10 Feb 2012)

Crime Patrol:Manipur girl raped in Delhi: 48 hours on, no breakthrough; North East community angry- 10 Feb 2012

A 20-year-old girl from Manipur state was allegedly raped last night by an unidentified man. The girl hails from Churachandpur district in Manipur. She came to Delhi in 2010 and working in a spa centre at Gurgaon, an NGO said today.

A note from the NGO said the alleged victim, identity withheld, was waiting for public transport after she finished her office work at around 8.45 PM at Gurgaon.

“A man offered her lift to her residence in Mahipalpur. Instead of taking her to Mahipalpur road, the man forcefully took (her) toward Dwarka. She screamed inside the car but man took her to an isolated area in Dwarka sector 20, beaten her, bite on face and raped her repeatedly. She was left in the place; the man run away. She remained unconscious till 11 PM and called her friends and her friends rushed to the spot and found her laying in cold, wounded,” the NESCH said

Crime Patrol:Manipur girl raped in Delhi: 48 hours on, no breakthrough; North East community angry- 10 Feb 2012

Beautician Tanya an employee of a Beauty parlor was eagerly waiting for the bus to arrive as she had to reach home thus an unknown person named Vikas offers her a lift in his car to which she strictly denies but later gets in the car as Vikas assures her that he will driver her home safely. Vikas takes a wrong way and thus one of the worst incident occurs with Beautician Tanya as Vikas parks his car in the middle of the dark jungle and rapes her and flees. Cops gets to know that Vikas's real name is Sameer Punj and thus they visit his house. How will cops trap Sameer Punj?

The Inside Story
New Delhi: The notoriety of being considered the most unsafe city for women continues for Delhi as the city was witness to yet another rape, this time of a 20-year-old Manipuri student. The girl, working at a spa centre, was raped in Dwarka on Wednesday night by a man who offered her a lift back home. But 48 hours on, there seems to have been no breakthrough in the case.

"The DCP of South West Delhi, despite getting clear clues, is not arresting the person but saying they are still investigating the case," Madhu Chandra, Spokesperson of North East Helpline said.

The allegation of inaction on the part of the police stems from the fact that cops found the debit card of the accused from the spot, thus revealing the latter's identity.

The police official in charge of the district under whose jurisdiction the crime took place refused to come on camera. He, though, told NDTV that they have been conducting raids to nab the accused.

Meanwhile, a sense of deep mistrust and anger runs through the north-eastern community over what they call as cultural stereotyping, something that makes them vulnerable to crimes in the city.

Their fears are supported by statistics - according to two studies conducted in 2008 by the North East Support Centre, 50% of the molestation and harassment cases in the national capital involve girls from the region.

The Delhi Police, though, has refused to accept the survey. But with growing incidents of crimes against women, the city is gradually losing out on trust, especially from students hailing from the North East which comprise one of the largest campus communities.

Inside Story
Ruby Chaurasiya
15, May 2010, Ruby Chaurasia-a suspect in the abduction of income tax official Sanjeev Bainswar's son Aditya-allegedly committed suicide at her home in Lucknow's Krishna Nagar on Friday.

A suicide note was recovered from the room of the girl, whose family was staying as tenants in Bainswar's house. But it merely said no one should be held responsible for her death and did not state the reason for her taking the extreme step. According to the police, the mastermind of the crime, Chandrabhan, was Ruby's friend.

The girl, along with her parents and two brothers, was being questioned by the police since Wednesday night. On Thursday night, they were allowed to go home.

“It was mental pressure which pushed my sister to take such a drastic step,” said Ruby's elder brother Deepak, who works at a private firm. “Though the police did not ill-treat us, we had to stay in the police station for almost 24 hours.” He said his sister had been upset since she returned home on Thursday night. On Friday morning, Ruby was asked to make tea. When she did not return, her mother went to check on her and found her body in her room.

Eleven-year-old Aditya Vikram was kidnapped from home on Wednesday. The police rescued him the same evening. The kidnappers had first entered Chaurasia's part of the house, injected Ruby and her mother Suneeta with sedatives. Then they had gone into Bainswar's flat, sedated Aditya's mother Sarika and his tutor Manjit Kaur before carrying off the boy.

During investigation, police came to know that Chandrabhan was Ruby's friend and was a frequent visitor in the house. He is currently absconding.

“We are questioning several persons in the case and Ruby was one of them,” said Virender Kumar, Inspector, Krishna Nagar. “It was a part of the investigation to collect details about the kidnappers.”
