THE INSIDE STORY:
CHENNAI: Jul 4, 2011. A 13-year old boy in north Chennai died after he was shot when he scaled a wall to enter the army's residential quarters, triggering public protests and condemnation by the Tamil Nadu chief minister.
As irate crowds agitated outside the government general hospital where the boy died, chief minister J Jayalalithaa issued a statement that the Indian army should hand over to the state police the jawan who shot the boy.
"This is unacceptable. The security personnel could have easily known that this boy is not a terrorist or a militant," she said.
Dilson, who lived in a nearby slum, had jumped over to enter the Old Fort Glacis Officers' Enclave at 1.30 pm along with a few friends. Minutes later, after he climbed a tree, his friends heard gunshots and fled. When they returned with Dilson's relatives, they found him lying unconscious on the grounds, bleeding from the head. They rushed him to the government general hospital where he succumbed to his injuries at 5.20 pm.
According to doctors, Dilson was critical when he was brought to the hospital, less than two kms from the scene of the incident, and required life support. Doctors said he had an entry-and-exit bullet wound on his skull. "We could not save him," said a doctor who treated him.
The person who shot the boy remained unidentified till reports last came in. A senior army official in Chennai, Brigadier (admin) Sashi Nair, told the media that the area had been cordoned off for investigations following the incident. The enclave has no armed personnel, and sentries, who are outsourced, are only equipped with lathis, he said. "It's very sad this happened. But it's not right to say an army jawan fired. It could have been the military, police or civilians," he said.
The youngest of four siblings, Dilson was a class five dropout who worked for daily wages to help his ailing father, Kumar, a carpenter. The family lived in Indira Gandhi Nagar, a slum close to the Island Grounds. Crowds comprising Dilson's relatives and neighbours thronged the hospital and army quarters in the evening in protest, blocking traffic and demanding justice. The crowds also surrounded vehicles of ministers who visited the hospital to verify the details.
The police have registered a case of murder (section 302 of IPC). The post-mortem was conducted after dusk. Finance minister O Panneerselvam handed over a cheque for Rs 5 lakh to Dilson's grieving family minutes after the post-mortem. The body of the boy was handed over to the parents after 9.30 pm.

After strangling Nilam in silvassa, husband and his relatives tried to bribe a doctor in Thane to make it seem like an accident; when he refused, they drove till Uttar Pradesh where they dumped the car and fled.
On August 25, the Singh family took a cross-country road trip in their Toyota Innova, all the way from Silvassa in Gujarat to Jaunpur in Uttar Pradesh, making a pit stop in Thane. Behind this seemingly innocuous journey lies a horrifying tale of greed and murder. Priyesh Singh (25) and his kin had just strangled his 24-year-old wife Nilam, and were driving to find a suitable place to dump the corpse.
The route taken by the SinghsA Mulund resident, Priyesh co-owns NP Belting Limited at Pimparia, Silvassa, with his father. Whenever members of the Singh family visited Silvassa, they would put up in their flat at Pramukh Vihar Colony. According to investigation reports of the Silvassa police, Priyesh was residing at the flat with Nilam, their one-and-a-half-year-old son Abhishek, elder brother Nilesh, and his parents.
Road to perdition: The woman's corpse was recovered from an
abandoned Toyota Innova by the UP police in Jaunpur, three days after
she was murdered in Silvassa.
On the night of August 25, he called his elder brother's wife, informing her that an accident had claimed Nilam's life.
Unable to believe his statements, the concerned sister-in-law asked her younger sister, a resident of Navi Mumbai, to make an anonymous phone call to Nilam's family, intimating them that Nilam might be in trouble. The caller requested the family to reach Silvassa at the earliest.
After the call, Nilam's elder brother Pradip Singh immediately departed for Silvassa. Reaching the apartment in Pramukh Vihar colony, he found that it was locked. He then registered a complaint with the Silvassa police, on charges of dowry killing, and kidnapping.
"My family owns a petrol pump on the Thane Highway, and it had been mutually agreed upon that it would be divided equally between me, my brother and Nilam after my father's death. But Nilam refused to take any share of the property, and this was a sore point with her husband and in-laws, who started harassing her," said Pradip.
The journey begins
By this time, the cross-country road trip had already commenced. According to Silvassa police officials, the accused had travelled to a hospital in Thane. There, Priyesh and his father Harishshankar met Omprakash Lalthaprasad Tiwari, who helped them bribe a doctor into disposing the body. They requested him to formally attribute Nilam's death to a road accident, and offered Rs 25 lakh for the favour as hush money.
The doctor, however, refused, and turned them away.
Unable to dump the body for fear of detection, they travelled with their cargo all the way to Jaunpur. At Jaunpur, they started receiving phone calls from Silvassa police officials, which they were careful not to answer. Realising that they were being tailed by cops, they abandoned the vehicle, and did not switch off the car's AC. The UP police, who had been briefed about the crime, recovered Nilam's body from the abandoned vehicle on August 28.
Nabbed
Priyesh was arrested in Silvassa on September 2, after which he confessed to his crime. This was followed by the arrests of the vehicle's driver and an accomplice. Priyesh's parents and brother are also wanted in the case.
"Throughout his interrogation, Priyesh kept saying that it was his mother who had killed his wife. He insisted that he had no role to play in Nilam's murder. We would be able to establish the motive and truth behind his claims only when we arrest and question Priyesh's parents," said HC Rathod, police sub-inspector of the Silvassa police station.
Marks on Nilam's body, handed over to Silvassa police station for post mortem, suggested that the death had been caused due to asphyxiation from strangulation.

While the police were able to arrest the chief accused, they have not yet found the missing diamonds worth Rs 1.25 crore
The police on Saturday claimed to have made a major breakthrough in the murder and robbery of a diamond delivery boy by arresting the alleged murderer on Thursday. The delivery boy's dead body was found on November 19 close to Panchgani with diamonds worth Rs 1.25 crore missing.
According to the police, Hardik Moradia, who worked for a diamond businessman named Parth Mehta in Panchratna building in South Mumbai, was killed by his friend and neighbour, 32 year-old Naresh Golani, who also worked as a diamond broker, along with three other accomplices. Both, the victim and Golani lived in Virar.
At a press conference, Ajit Surve, Senior Police Inspector of D B Marg police station claimed that initial investigations had revealed that Golani had lured Moradia into selling the diamonds he was supposed to deliver to a client on November 17. However, instead of travelling to Kurla, as was promised by Golani, the accused along with three others, drove Moradia to Panchgani. The group reportedly stabbed the victim multiple times and fled with the diamonds.
According to the police, they were able to solve the case by going through Moradia's phone records and examining CCTV footage taken near Panchratna building. The last call made by Moradia before he went missing on November 17 was reportedly to Golani, and the CCTV footage revealed that the duo met frequently. When Golani was interrogated, he is said to have confessed to the crime.
While the police have been able to recover the car in which Moradia was taken, they haven't yet managed to trace Golani's Wagon R and the missing diamonds. Another accused, a certain Dharmesh Patel, who lives in Gujarat, has been identified and a special police team has been sent to nab him. The other two accused are yet unidentified and at large.
Marodia, who moved to Mumbai five months ago from Gujarat, had gone missing on November 17. Locals discovered his body on November 19, and the police identified him from the card he was carrying in his pocket. He previously worked as a diamond polisher in Gujarat.
