Role of the police sub-inspector under the scanner; transferred to the security wing
It is the stuff of Bollywood legend now and we have seen many such stories unfolding on the tube. But, after all reel takes many a cue from the real life.
Shazia, 22, could have been alive and helping some big infrastructure coming up in her state - Bihar - but for a small tiff with her landlord.
The mechanical engineering student went to the Nangloi police station after her landlord in the west Delhi locality started allegedly harassing her over some minor issues.
There she met sub-inspector Rajender Sharma and then Shazia became a frequent visitor to the police station.
Sources said the two allegedly had an illicit affair and met often.
However, things went from bad to worse and Shazia suddenly went missing. Her family lodged a missing complaint at the same police station on October 7.
A week later the police found Shazia's burnt body in Rajasthan.
Shazia's family approached senior police officials and demanded a thorough probe into the matter. The case was handed over to the special cell, which found that the murdered student had an alleged affair with sub-inspector Sharma.
Special cell sleuths, on Wednesday, arrested the wife, son, and nephew of the sub-inspector in connection with the case. Highly-placed sources in the special investigating unit of Delhi Police told MiD DAY that during the course of investigation, it was found that Sharma's family found out that he was going along with a girl. Enraged over the fling, Sharma's wife and her relatives conspired to eliminate Shazia and took the student of Bihar to Rajasthan on a yet to be disclosed pretext.
They first murdered her in the desert state and then burnt her body to damage the body so that it could not be identified.
"While investigating the case our informers told us that they had last seen Shazia with Sharma's son Lalit and their nephew Narendra. Lalit broke down on persistent questioning and disclosed that he along with his mother Rajrani and Narendra had kidnapped Shazia and later murdered her in Rajasthan. Lalit told the police that Shazia had been blackmailing his father," said a police official, requesting anonymity.
The police said that they were also probing the role of Sharma in the case and that he was not totally out of the ring of suspicion.
Meanwhile, Sharma has been transferred to the security wing of the Delhi Police.
